This video Behavior Modification with an Aggressive German Shepherd Max is from Thoma's recent trip to Nebraska to help stop the fearful aggression and behavior Max the German Shepherd suffers from. Thomas uses both the Prong collar and Ecollar to help break german shepherds from fear based reactivity. You will see this behavior modification happen in a very short time in this two part session on behavior modification for fear based aggression in german shepherd dogs.

My Swiss Shepherd suffered from a traumatic accident, when she was just 10 weeks old. It led to a nasty case of fear aggression and I was at a loss, after never having seen it in another dog; but giving up wasn’t an option. That’s when I found you and you saved her. You are making such a difference, Tom. Never, ever forget the impact you’re making.

It's okay. I'm sure she was nervous. It's hard. The behavioral modification wasn't just for the dog but for her as well. So she was learning how she should deal with him just the same.

I think she is exhausted. 3 months doing the wrong thing with no help from whoever that was. So lovely to see her get the right help. Max is so relieved. After she gets to experience the good times, her life and Max's will be so different. Thanks Tom and team!

Very impressed. I'm former law enforcement, and had a beautiful black and silver GSD that I and 2 other officers trained ourselves. My vet would insist on tranquilizing her before allowing in the office. Even tho she had never bitten or showed real aggression towards anyone. Was a small town and we would work the school zone at end of school and all the kids would pet her. My point is when I first got her she was about like the dog in this video and was actually being walked to the euthanasia room when I stopped them and adopted her. Took me almost a month to change her attitude and reactions, but was one of the best dogs I ever had the pleasure of owning and as a partner as my K-9 officer partner.

What I love about this series and especially this episode, is that the techniques apply for ALL dog-owner relationships, not just aggressive fearful dogs. The key takaways that I got from this were how important it is to also reward, even if you are focused on stopping a different behaviour. Its so easy to fixate on the stopping behaviour and forget about rewarding the good/wanted behaviour. The other takeaway was your coaching in how she can recognize environments that are too much for Max. I struggle with that one, where I take Moxie to environments that are beyond her capability and then I get frustrated. I need to re-think it so that its from her perspective, not just what I want to be doing or where I want to be going. Thanks Tom!

I can't express how happy I was when I watched this video. We have a reactive German Shepard as well. He is a rescue and we don't know what he has been through. So many people have told us "he should be put down". He just needs help. We have started with a trainer and making progress. I hope that in a few weeks we can get to this point and help him deal with his fear. Thank you for your time, knowledge and the hope you give to those of us dealing with fearful dogs. The very best to you Thomas!

I get her fear. When the trainer handed me my dog I was so nervous, I made all the same mistakes. My fear of her reactions was so high that I was making it 1000x worse. It's only been one week now and my situation is already 80% BETTER. She trained me very well, I feel much more confident.

rewarding/praising my dogs was the hardest part about becoming a dog owner. Being in the military you are conditioned to just automatically know what to do when instructed so it was a real mind bender learning to be a parent instead of giving out orders. It is so beneficial to see the partnership we have now.

Tom is one of the most realistic trainers in all this KZbin trainer jungle. He always points out to not only correct appropriate and timely but also to praise for good behaviour. Most importantly, he always spent a lot of time and explaining with the biggest problem of the dog: the owner. Absolutely love his sessions.

It makes me so happy to see Max's behavior changed this effectively and quick. He can be so much more relaxed and happy now because of a few quick corrections and then it's done. This really underscores the need for a balanced approach with dogs. I'm not as naturally in tuned with dogs as you are Tom, but I can seek out information to try to educate myself to get most of the way there. It's us owners that need training not our dogs.

I've always been a firm believer that if you can't read a dog; you can not only not solve his/her behavioral issues, you also cannot put a training program together either! Tom you're a great read for dogs; as a result, training becomes a mere walk in the park,,,,,,,😎. Max is on the right path. There is a very strong common denominator between both you & Cesar Milan; you both are big on training the human, then the dog. How could anyone ever disagree with that methodology? RESPECT.

I hear people that purchased a large dog and find out they’re too much for them. The dog doesn’t get trained not even with basic obedience. So the owner thinks they’re only way to solve the problem is to have the dog put down. When in common sense and reality, it wasn’t the dogs fault it was the owners fault. You’re doing a good thing by video taping and sharing your videos.

What I really like about this video is that you are not only teaching the dog to be calm but you are giving the owner the tools (body language & breathing) to be calm around the dog. I think this is really important coming out of the stressful situation that both the dog and the owner have been in.

I'm so glad I found this. This gives us so much hope. We have a 7 month old pitbull/mastiff mix and he is aggressive towards everyone that's not the 4 of us. At home he is the sweetest, great dog, even with our 2 year old, we completely trust him but we haven't been around others since we got him. We just took him to the vet last week for shots and had a muzzle on him. They wouldn't even try to give him the shots and basically told us that since he was like this at such a young age, we should just put him down. We've been heartbroken about what they said, but thankful I've found you and we are going to start slowly with what I've seen in your videos. Thank you so much

I just started watching your channel. I have certification and workshop completion in Behavior Modification, basic and advanced on and off leash training. Shutzhun 1 (now IGP since 2019) training with aggressive dogs, tracking, and bite work. I was honored to be trained by one of the best, Bill Price of Estate Dogs in Columbus Ohio. He won the Universal Sieger award, holding the number 1 in the world. I love watching and learning from other trainers. You can always learn more. I followed right along with you while working the GSD. It is so much about training the owner than anything else, is what I have found. And the owner really needs to be more excited (in my opinion) when appraising her dog. I think you needed to keep reminding her, and that is such an important part of training. And the energy when she was appraising her dog was really a bit flat. I love watching, and then thinking what I would do in that situation, then wait to see what you said. It’s a great learning tool! Looking forward to watching many more of your videos. There is always a situation you can be training your dog! Opportunities are all over the place! Thanks again, looking forward to learning more!

Just found your channel a couple of days ago. Implemented the technique you use on the pit bull mix charging out of the crate and dragging volunteers around the yard. Started closing door whenever she tried rushing out. After a few tries she waits until I put on her collar and release her to come out. Just ordered the prong collar to work with walking her on leash. Harness and martingale collars did not work. Rewatching several of your videos for the correct implementation and use of prong collar. Looking forward to getting my 7 month old Queensland Heeler on track. I have been failing her by not giving her structure and boundries. She has been my first fog since losing my almost 14 year old Black Lab. Thank you for doing what you do. And I will remember the praise!

You are also spot on on so called trainers/behaviourist who wont' came anywhere near your dog, but got so many qualifications..... we have been through that too... but now is all progress, my boy will probably never be a people's dog or a dog's dog, but as long as he is content, under control and no reacting at everything I am happy! I love that Tom emphasizes being fair to the dog. Setting realistic expectations and being mindful of breed. Certain dogs have it in their DNA to protect owners and therefore aren't meant to not be 'ok' with strangers. And that the owners should advocate for their dog to set them up for success. Awesome philosophy and makes so much sense.

I understand her nerves. Having a big, strong dog that's nervous and aggressive is not easy, you have to become a REAL leader or you will put others in danger. You have to do so many things right and it all has to become second nature but you feel like you have to achieve it ASAP. That's what makes me nervous. Like every mistake fails my dog. As time passes we both get better, and I found I'm way more confident with other people as a result. I used to be bullied, and I have nerves with strangers, even if I don't show it. But this dog FEELS it, there's no fooling him. I cannot afford to be nervous or waver one bit.

Tom your approach WORKS. I’m a bit frustrated with my trainer as he A. Still doesn’t have a good relationship with my fearful dog and B. Doesn’t listen to me. I wish we lived closer to you!

This is becoming a regular on my evening watch list. Abuse, either with intent, or through ignorance is a time consuming thing to remedy. Horses will either walk or run away from a situation that they are afraid of. Predators like dogs become crippled or worse if they do not face the fears. Close either into a small space and get ready. The emphasis that you place on rewarding proper behavior is a piece that some people miss. Knowing your expectations builds confidence and replaces the need for defensive tactics.

So happy for Max that was great especially as he was such a nervous dog. You are an amazing trainer. My dog is an Akita collie cross and he at times has fear based aggression towards people outside but not always. I wish he would be more confident he hates people walking behind us too he keeps checking them out.

I just found you today and I have been binge watching all morning. I always knew I had a amazing dog but watching these videos really shows me how lucky I am. If I ever have a problem with a dog I will know where to look for help. You are truly an amazing trainer (although you are way more than a trainer) I just hope she remembers to reward max. Thanks for the great videos. I have subscribed

This episode kinda got to me. Screen got a little blurry...nose starting running a bit.... Max is SUCH a good boy, and he really loves his family. Poor guy was so afraid, and now maybe his people can help him be happy instead. Shit, I'm tearing up again. Damn you, Tom!

Great video Tom! It’s amazing what you can do. I’ve definitely felt what that owner’s feeling as far as waiting for their dog to act crazy. It’s so hard as an owner to trust your dog to make the right decision when all they’ve done is the wrong one.

I have never seen any calm, assertive, caring owner having behavioral problem with their dog. You never train a dog, you just train yourself to be a better leader, and dog will follow.

Hotdogs are used for treats or give pills. You don't always have treats on hand. Physical reward means a lot more to the dog & your relationship. Awesome Tom. Good boy. ☺

Another awesome video! So glad you showed this one. I love knowing I'm already doing the right thing with my gsd. Although mine loves going to places and I have no problems with him. It's more on walks or when he is in the yard and people with dogs walk by. He does listen when I tell him frimley yo knock it off. Thanks Tom!!

Again, amazing work as always, and also appreciating the great example that educating yourself is great yes, but you dont need to spend 1000s on college education to do something great. Also, I am so happy to see these dogs being able to just relax and have a much calmer mind, even if they cant be the perfect dog, this is amazing for them, and they will be so much happier!

I don't agree with shock or prong collars but if it's going to save a dogs life, then I know I would try anything if it was mine. You're probably the first trainer I've seen using these tools in the correct manner. I was lucky in that positive based training worked for Valentine. I did use your methods of body language and not anticipating a reaction, yes she barks when I answer the door but she won't put her head past my leg because that's the boundary, once she knows I'm in control and I don't need her to be a gsd, she goes and lays down!

Very well done Tom. I love my dogs but I also need to be strict with them and not allow them to pull any BS. Also agree with you on remember to reward, reward, reward. I want to know when I'm doing a good job! Also liked how you would capture his good behavior, like when he would lay down on his own. Thanks for allowing me to mentor with you via these videos~!

Love this. Learning so much from this especially since I have a reactive Belgian mallinos when my boy use to not be. Was around mths when he changed after he was attacked at the dog park and cause fear towards other dogs. He's more calmer with dogs that don't react to him but ones that are barking towards him he goes nuts on. Even with people now he started to have problems when he use to not.
