I'm so glad this was addressed as well. Both my husband and I were hospitalized as kids with infections we contracted from the saliva of pets. For me, it was one of my grandparents dogs licking my face. They think the bacteria got into my bloodstream thru a scratch that I also got from the same dog. My husband was bit and got an infection. They know it came from the dogs and not any bacteria already present on the skin because it was a k9 specific bacteria. I'll have to ask my mother for the actual details. But I have never let any of my dogs lick, because of this. Especially on the face.

Tucker caught on SO fast - he was actually making it tough for you to demonstrate the techniques! Not that he won't test the owner once they are home, but even then, if she is consistent, Tucker will stop these unwanted behaviors. No treats; no redirection - just done. I really wish I had known you about 12 years ago - I was stuck in the positive reinforcement loop - and it just didn't work. This is so much more efficient.

I work for an in-house pet care company, and I can't not tell you how many owners don't teach their pets this, I feel like its so disrespectful having a guest come to your home and their dog is constantly jumping on you (and most owners don't even cut the dogs nails so it's also painful) so when I got my dobbie this was the first thing I taught her, more owners should watch this video and understand that jumping is not cute

I can relate to this. I’m a receptionist at a big doggy daycare (plus grooming and training) and ALL of the freaking dogs do this. I’m not scared to do the kneeing technique with them because it’s not cute and they can really scratch us up and draw blood. The owners think it’s so quirky and they’re always like “Off! Oh, I’m so sorry hahaha” and I’m like, your dog definitely doesn’t even know what off means so why would you expect them to listen -.- It’s so annoying. At this point, I’ll literally snatch their neck upward with their leash when I’m taking them from their parent if they try to jump because I’m over it. Teach your dog basic manners.

Brilliant. What a great dog! He really is the smartest dog in the world! Seriously though, a really good, smart dog and you can tell with just a little bit of the right work, he'll get it. Simple, calm techniques without harsh corrections and they work.

Poodles learn very very fast. This is why they used to train them in the circus to perform tricks. When you start mixing the poodle with other breeds such as cocker spaniels you get a dog that will learn eventually but it takes a while. I had a cavapoo and she was so chilled and a very quick learner.

Exactly ! That is so it ! I used to work on a Wildlife Park, and an ex-Paratrooper who "mentored" me just always said "WATCH them, don't just look, but SEE ! and get to KNOW them !" That panned out over years where with the Red Deer Stags in the rutting season, would "allow" me in their compound, but non of the others. BECAUSE of all the time I had spent just sitting with them and respecting their body language with each other. Same with our Bison, BUT I was always SO much more alert as the Matriarch was NEVER predictable in ways I could SEE ? One Fallow Deer stag was SUCH a pure "Gentleman" a REAL NOBLE ! I wish I had been able to see Joel's videos all those years ago. Would have been SO useful

I always love seeing when dog owners make the connection. It really helps when they’re paired with a trainer that knows what the dog and the human need together, as a team. One reason Joel’s recommendations work so well is because they are precise, minimal & to the point. The dog understands & it’s easier for the human. I’m not saying that +R isn’t a good thing. It can definitely be the most beneficial method for some dogs but for me personally, I don’t wanna have to rely on carrying a massive bag of treats with me everywhere I go. I want to know that my dog and I have built a connection, that there’s mutual respect/communication happening and I can rely on that, rather than hoping and praying that a treat will get the result I’m hoping for.

Agreed. When we have new dogs and owners over for tour, we always tell them to leave the treats in the car. Dogs can turn to demons if another dog is close to their "mothers" treat bag. And owners being to slow to read what is gonna happen. (im talking about the real spoiled dogs😅)

the problem with my dog is he likes to test everyone. he's a huge dog so jumping is really bad, and i hate inviting people over because he wants to jump on everyone. he means no harm, he just gets too excited. i try to tell people not to interact, but no one listens. when i push him with my knee, he stops, but always tries. the problem is with every guest, especially new guests, he likes to test them and forgets everything ive taught him, and it really doesnt help that no one takes my advice when i say to not encourage the behavior. they say "oh its ok, i love dogs!" i love dogs too, but what i dont love is when my dog jumps on people. its embarrassing and can be dangerous for children and older people

You do use the fingers with a horse.. starting with a thumb.. lightly at fist and increase pressure until they respond. I think you would be a natural horse trainer :)

My dog stops jumping immediately as soon as a guest (never me) becomes “boring” (no eye contact, no touching, no talking, nothing) It’s literally instant! But the problem is guests instinctively react, for better or worse, and even tho all they have to do is essentially play dead for 3 seconds, they can’t/won’t 🙁 soooo…the leash comes out.

The ignore with a knock off worked for me. They jump to get your attention, when they see it doesn't work they stop. A greet with a sit gets them what they want: Attention and or food.

I’m so lucky that my puppy doesn’t jump! He’s 4 months (standard poodle and service dog in training) but he’s naturally laid back and doesn’t do typical annoying puppy things. I know all of this information already from working around other great dog trainers but I’m glad to see you reinforcing what I already know. It makes me feel great and well informed! Thank you 😊 I’m glad that we share the same ideologies about tough love. Way too many dogs are overly spoiled and pampered. I love my Leiden but I take ZERO crap from him and I constantly get compliments on how well behaved he is and how well his manners and basic obedience are. Tbh I wouldn’t be as tough on him if he wasn’t my service dog in training but still, dogs need structure and consistency and someone to show them what’s up.

Hi there, how do I stop my greyhound jumping when I want to go out or when I am taking him for a walk and he goes beserk upon bring out the leash and harness? I have the same problem with my Havanese. Everyone we meet allows him to jump on them because he's so cute. He doesn't jump on me - he jumps next to me and I pat him when his paws are on the floor. I don't want him jumping on children (or anyone else) but how can I show people how to stop a very small dog? People just love the way he springs up at them but it's not OK.

Do you have any solutions for 10 month old Aussie that obsesses over grabbing the leash (his or our other dogs) while walking. Tried the stopping and telling them no, tried leave it, tried putting tape on the leash as a deterrent. Nothing seems to help. He tends to do it most when I change direction or while walking both of our dogs together.

met a lady who raised her leg cause she thought my dog was gonna jump, i called her out on it. "oh ur doing the leg thingy, good reaction but he doesnt jump". i could see in her eyes that she was terrified that i would bash her for it, but i support the method, there is other methods when ur leashwalking but not off leash when it realy matters. In the dog training club im in its to much positive only mentality.. Unless u correct a dog he wont do what you want him to, and when he does reward it, and it is better that the dog figures out the good behaviour by it self(sticks better). I rather correct a dog Once then 100times to c results. Sometimes(most times) a quick soft->medium pop of the leash is better then 30 pieces of candy for teaching.

Our newly adopted GSD will jump and NIP, especially on my mother in law. We showed her different ways of correcting the dog’s jumping and nipping behavior and the dog will nip her when she uses her hands to correct the dog. I think my mother in law is scared and stressed when she is with the dog 🥲and that make her corrections “weak”

So my dogs don't jump on me but they will jump when new people come over. Do I need to tell the visitors to do the same things or is there something specific that I can do so they know that it goes for all people? I have family that encourage the jumping but it's not a habit I want them to pick up.

You can use a leash on your dog inside in the beginning and step on it to stop any jumping, then wait for a sit/or calm down while telling your guest to ignore the dog. Then rewards for good behaviour.

You can do what Viking said or you can have the guests do what’s in the video. Both methods work, it’s your preference.

I have a 5 month old standard poodle pup that we are trying this with. He literally thinks it's play time when we push him off. He does the same with the knee up. Gets more excited thinking its a new game 🤷🏻‍♀️
