So good, Joel!!!!! I also work my dog NEAR the dog park. He is SO desensitized now. Doesn’t even care about other dogs now. I started using a prong tho because my guy is huge and so strong. I watch dogs DRAG their owners in and out of the dog park. My GSD is so good now. So in control. So calm. It didn’t used to be like this! Lots of hard work. People compliment me ALL the time. He still doesn’t love strangers and still doesn’t love other dogs, but he is calm. He’s my buddy. And he’s calm!!!!!! Hallelujah.

@@trishhibberd22es, you work the dog right outside the dog park fence on the other side of the fence for everybody's safe but where the dog feels like he's around the other dogs and they will desensitize to other dogs being around while staying calm it may take a couple of chaotic tries it first but don't quit just keep going and eventually you'll get there.

Another masterclass by Joel. Love watching your videos man, as an owner of a 2 yr old high energy working line GSD, your videos and approach have helped my wife and I a lot. We got him as a pup with the intention of training him to be a PTSD service dog for my wife who was attacked and sexually assaulted on the beach 2 years ago, and the process has been hard, these dogs are no joke. We've put in a lot of work though and he's a really good boy, and I hope some day soon we'll take the "in training" tags off, but he's still got a little ways to go. I watch a lot of trainers on KZbin, and would say I look forward to your videos the most since you give the most in depth explanation of what you're doing and why, not to mention Prince is an absolute champ of a dog who does his job like a boss. this makes me want to cry because this is the exact journey i went on when I adopted the most beautiful all-black 1 year old GSD from the pound at 18 years old, with zero dog knowledge or experience in my entire life. i cried over so many dog trainer consultations who would tell me she's aggressive and she would never be able to be around other dogs due to sheer intensity of her leash reactivity. until a few short months working together with a trainer who volunteered her time to the same dog rescue I volunteered with. she brought her even-tempered malinois-shep to my neighborhood and we walked and corrected and desensitized over and over and I just never. stopped. now ten years later she is snoozing happily next to me in her bed. she's been going to group doggy daycare ranging from 5 full days a week to now 1-2 times for many years. sure, she occasionally still reacts when another dog stares her down as we walk past on the sidewalk, and yeah I let her lead the walks a little more now because she's more interested in sniffing than barking in her age, but she is perfect and i'm so glad she didn't give up on me either.

This is not related to this video but since it's your most recent video (and I'm currently catching up with old ones so will watch this soon) I really have to thank you. I have a small dog and I was worried about how do I go on about correcting and then re-enforcing it and balancing all that with love. While I'm still not by any means even decent yet, your method of stopping and pulling to the side so the dog corrects themselves has really improved our walks. Now he has a bit of a personality so he will only be near my heel if he feels like it, but also doesn't pull on the leash too often. This is insane improvement in my eyes already, and I hope to continue to learn more from you! Thank you again!
@johncspine2787 Жыл бұрын
Dogs live in the moment..correcting a dog shouldn’t be connected to a negative emotion or communicated to the dog negatively, they don’t hold a grudge. You won’t harm your relationship by correcting, instead, you show calm, consistent leadership and your dog also becomes calmer and more consistent.

This is a great example of how to properly introduce unknown dogs to each other. Especially a dog that lacks any social skills. So many owners tend to just put the dogs nose to nose and hope for the best. It's exponentially better to be proactive vs reactive when working with this stuff. Teach them the skills they need to handle the challenge they will be presented with before presenting them with that challenge.

I adopted a stray pitbull from Mexico, right off the bat she was as reactive as this GSD. I took her to dog parks every week for two years, and got to a point where she could be recalled off-leash in the presence of other dogs in the park. But she never ever got rid of her reactivity entirely, still barks at and fights other passing dogs outside of the couple of parks we frequented. She obeys my basic commands beautifully so long there are no other dogs in her view. IMO it's not hard to desensitize a dog to tolerate and coexist in a controlled space. The question is can we achieve the total change of temperament to where such dogs can be off-leash and always behave appropriately to strange dogs because you know it only takes one fight to relapse back to that defensive mindset.

Joel, I too binge watched your videos too when I discovered the channel, & keep watching for a year now & learning a lot mostly about dog's body language & how to let them get to know & play with each other. My dog is 16 months old now, hungarian mudi, big energy, weird, 'emotional', very friendly yet aloof, what we are working on now is - pulling on leash (pulls the place where we let him play, but there is only one road where we live so he very much knows whats up when we get up..) - not running up to everyone even tho we know his intentions are play (he also respect when other dogs don't want to play, etc) - excessive barking at our fence from inside (no barking at all outside!) - when walking, he doesn't care about other dogs barking from inside their fences EXCEPT this one GSD in our street, & it's a NIGHTMARE to pass that direction (so we wont even go that way anymore...) both of them are out off control :((( it's almost like he is very reactive but ONLY at *that* fence with *that* gsd :(( So, paying close attention to you training with gentle leader, I ordered one.. conditioned it for 2 weeks till he still hated it but could walk nice & without pulling, "loose leash". Until we got to the gsd fence. Tried to condition that as well by always spending a lil calm down time a little before that fence, every time getting a bit closer (to pass the fence..). I thought today was the day to pass without a fight but my dog jerked his head so quick, the gentle leader cut into his skin on his snout :/ (it *WAS* fitted properly before amyone writes it... ) I mean.. I don't know I guess we will just never go that way again but I won't put that thing on my dogs face amymore.. I was so hopeful & gaining more confidence, then pfff :/// (now that I cryed myself out, let's watch this new vid 😅👍)

I'm kinda glad that allowing a reaction is okay. I've said it for years with mine, he gives as good as he gets. While he's not the absolute greatest going past dogs, a lot of my issues is he is a big dog and there are a lot of small extremely reactive dogs around me locally. If a dog is calm or ignoring him, he might look and be absolutely fine. There are some that I will actively avoid because I know how badly they react and he's nearly been bitten by some. Naturally he'll react if they start it, but then I get the stink eye because hes an American Bulldog and they've got a really bad rep in the UK at the moment. I don't know why, people just seem to think it's fine having reactive or aggressive small breeds, but the second a larger dog acts out they're painted in a bad light. I'm glad mines a total goofball and for all his noise he's an absolute wuss

I found my dog desensitised to other dog once I met another dog randomly with a fence between them. My dog growled but the other dog was calm. Few minutes later my dog barked less and tried to smell. After that day my dog is more willing to meet other dogs though not perfect. But it gives me confidence to let the dogs meet and gives me the base to train my dog other things.

I love your channel. Is there a book you recommend?

Hi Joel, first I would like to say, I love watching your videos, and they have helped me be better with my dog and with dogs in general. I do have a few questions though, in your loose-leash walking video, you always do the door method, and always stop, checking to see if the dog is with you. I understand and I've done this with my dog, but when I trained my dog to walk on a leash he was about 4 years old so he is still learning what I expect of him. I'm 15 years old turning 16 in November, I plan on getting a Doberman when I move out, so I was wondering when you trained Prince when he was younger, do you still have to do the door method and the corrections, or has he learned to just always be on your page? Another question I have is, and I know you made a couple of videos on this but, how did you potty train Prince? I know that Dobermans love their owners and are more prone to separation anxiety because of this, does or did this affect how to potty train Prince? I'm sorry to take your time by asking these questions, but I hope you can answer these questions. Thank you.

Would you recommend gentle leader for a toy breed with relatively high reactivity? Or do I just stick to the harness?

Just out of curiosity, why was prince going at him? I may have missed it, but I didn’t see what he did to upset prince. Great video btw👍🏽
