Big Mom's powers were stated to be if you fear death even slightly she can take your soul back in 829 when she kill Moscato "Don't cower Moscato or she can take your soul". Seems to be if you have no fear of death your soul is protected from her grasp.

Oda didn't nerf Big Mom at all, she's had that limitation from the first time she used that power. I remember when she first used it they said something like "Don't run or she'll steal your life."
