Man, I love how you guys talk through the shots. Simple logic, but still planning. And Mike's point about reprogramming and getting a positive picture is gold. I find myself doing exactly what you did in that I hit the shot, good or bad and walk away. Clear the slate focus on the new set of variables, definitely have to add that to my routine.

Jack's ball always sounded different than the other guys. That's because he used a MacGregor Tourney while the rest of the field was using Titleist. If you are old enough and remember the Spalding Black Dot 100 compression, you'll remember THAT SOUND. It was absolutely fantastic. There never has been since a better feeling ball....at least to me....than the Black Dot and there never has been a better sound than a persimmon driver hitting a Black Dot. Today all we hear is....."tink".....in some rare cases....."TINK".

The lesson with Mike on course management is probably worth 5 strokes for the average golfer. When he moved your ball to the other side of the tee box for your fade I was like, "oh ya, duh."

Jack came into the ball shallow because he played with a constant ball position for every club.Most golfers vary the ball position by moving it slightly backwards each time, as the club gets shorter.Consequently at impact they have shaft lean especially with the shorter irons.
@pb12661

Jack's prime swing is so much more pleasing to the eye than the "modern" swings. He generated that speed in a very relaxed manner. These guys now swing out of their shoes and it looks uncontrolled a lot of times. Maybe it's because I grew up watching the "classic" swings but I don't find too many swing on tour that really gets me jealous (if that makes sense). Finally a guy who really knows about Nicklaus. The younger guys just don't know.....I used to follow him around at Muirfield Village every year and was always amazed at his ball striking.

The old ball with the high spin......to see that, just look at Nicklaus' 1 Iron at the 17th at Pebble....the shot from the green back to the tee......low then to high.....granted it was into the wind but it does display what Mike is talking about.

Jack always felt the weight; centripetal force; and direction of his club head as he twirled the club head upward with his lead hand on to the back swing and then at the top of the swing he used the power of apparent centrifugal force of his trail hand to reverse the direction of the club head centripetal force twirling it downward in it's circular path and upward to its finish. As Mike once said the club head best travel in a true circular path by centripetal force using apparent centrifugal force transmitted by our lead hand to the top of our swing and then changes with our trail hand on the downswing. Cheers and love your site as usual.

brendan, i think the fade and cut shot are the easiest for me and probaby most amateurs to hit because everyone open up so early and swing across. but hardley anyone allows for it. i can pretty much hit it both ways but sometimes one is working better than the other and allow for the curve.

@seth1455
@seth1455 6 жыл бұрын
If an elite proffesional is more comfortable hitting one way rather than the other, then they are playing to their strengths. They know their game and are playing the percentages. It doesn't mean that on the range they can't hit either, they just know from experience one shot or the other isn't reliable. It also doesn't mean an amateur can't hit it both ways, but come the moment in a competion, can you pull it off ?

I also love watching Jack in the Shell's Wonderful World of Golf matches. I watched almost all of his matches and if memory serves me he only lost one time (did he lose to Weiskopf?). It's what made me realize that he was the greatest golfer of all time. I was always a Tiger guy, since I grew up in the Tiger era. But Jack had something about him that put him at a higher level than his competitors. He had this ability to out play, out think, and out work his opponent. He truly was a uniquely superior golfer. 18 majors, Jesus Christ. Tiger is a close second, but there can only be one Jack Nicklaus, the undisputed GOAT of golf.

Really like Malaska, totally agree with the obvious points re lower spin today, but the idea that you don't have to take wind into account "at all" is just totally wrong. Repudiated by all available data. It's true that it's _less_ a problem than it was in the old spin-and-rise-to-a-peak days, but wind is still a factor.

I’ve watched a lot of your videos and I get the sense that you’re a nice and respectful guy. However, the one constant theme I see in all of your videos is that you talk over your guests. I don’t think you mean to do this. Instead, I think it’s just a bad habit you’ve formed. I challenge you to watch a few of your videos and focus on the dialogue exchange...especially after you’ve asked a question of your guest and they are in the process of replying. You tend to cut them off constantly. It’s almost as if you’re thinking of what you want to say while they are speaking instead of truly listening and responding to what they’re saying. Just something to work on! We all have out challenges:)

Jack’s club head speed wasn’t 125-130. Average modern long drive champions (with much longer clubs and twice his strength) is 135. Jack was great, but 130 mph with a super short driver and a hickory shaft is laughable.
@TheZenbudda
@TheZenbudda 5 жыл бұрын
Joe Smith you are 100% correct. Everyone bases those numbers of that long drive he won. There was a 20mph down wind when he hit it and everyone things he was the long drive king. I’m not saying he couldn’t carry 300 with old technology in his prime. But 130mph speed is crazy fast.
@marcvanderbilt9324
@marcvanderbilt9324 3 жыл бұрын
He was the longest hitter like John Daly, Tiger Woods and Bryson now. An estimate of 125 as top speed seems reasonable to me.
@marcvanderbilt9324
@marcvanderbilt9324 3 жыл бұрын
And you can do the math. If a club doesn’t hit that ball with that speed, the ball doesn’t travel that far. Those oldfashioned balls travelled 20-plus yards less anyhow and the club faces had less bounce. So just think about the maths. You need a clubhead speed now of 120-125 to hit a ball over 300 yards. Jack could reach that speed with 7 inches less clublength.
