Another comment that I will make is that I totally agree with the quote by Tarrasch you put up above the board. "Chess, like love, like music, has the power to make (humans) happy." I am a musician and music teacher and besides teaching and conducting choirs, I teach music theory which involves analyzing and discovering relationships within chords, melodies, etc. Both music and chess have what might be called "invisible architecture." Particularly when composing or improvising in music, the composer/improvisor has many choices to go from one note or chord to the next, and these involve movements. Like in chess, there are stronger/weaker, smoother/angular, typical/atypical movement choices to be made. With regard to choosing movement and visualizing structures, I would assert that chess and music are deeply related.

How do you write the chords on the staff for the indicated Roman Numeral?
@BMessemer
@BMessemer 6 жыл бұрын
Well, the roman numeral indicates to play/realize the chord whose root (primary identifying note) is a scale degree identified by that (Roman) number. For example, let's say we are in F# Major. The F# Major scale has seven different notes, or "scale degrees" in it. These are: 1.F# 2.G# 3.A# 4. B 5. C# 6. D# 7. E#. So now let's say you see a roman numeral IV. This means to play the chord based on the 4th scale degree of the scale. In the key we're in, this means to play a B chord. It happens to be a B Major, as IV chords are automatically major if we are operating within a major key. A vi chord would automatically be minor, e.g. D#m or D sharp minor. And so on.

Hello there. Well, if you are completely unfamiliar with music theory, there are many many intro to music theory texts that you can check out. This being KZbin, there are all sorts of interesting tutorials you can watch as well, which may be more engaging than a "standard" text. If I could make a single suggestion, it would be to watch this video (link at the bottom) by a wonderful musician KZbinr named Andrew Huang. I would also thoroughly recommend subscribing to his channel, as he tends to cover sophisticated music concepts but is totally beginning-musician friendly. In this video he essentially started composing a melody (and accompanying chords), left it half-finished, and welcomed his viewers to finish composing it. He received 147 submissions from people who finished his incomplete idea. What's really fascinating is that he then, in a very scientific way, did a statistical analysis of all the compositional choices all 147 people made, showing us percentages of people who made one choice vs. another choice, etc. Absolutely fascinating and it's quite demonstrative of the point I made above about making moves or "choosing lines" the way a chess player might think of it. I hope you enjoy the comparison, here's the link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/f2Oom2eApdaol9U

Thanks for showing a Will Hartston game , he was the presenter on the BBC's chess program during the 1980's , the only regular chess show broadcast on British t.v. that i'm aware of. Following that he enjoyed success as a journalist writing newspaper trivia articles and chess puzzles since the show ended.

I see another threat at the end after Gligoric resigned. After the black queen captures the bishop on f7 and queen captures bishop on d6, there is a threat of Qd8+; black has to play Qg8, then Qf6+. black has to block with Qg7 and QxQ is checkmate. Of course black can stop this by moving the bishop from c8 allowing the rook to cover the 8th rank, but then it falls back to Qxe5 pawn and continues as you describe. By the way I love this channel and am going to scrape up a few dollars to contribute very soon.

7:42 - There is actually a defense here. Rg3+ is still a good move, but it doesn't immediately win the game because of the resource of Rg3+ Kh8, Qc3 Qd7!. It doesn't protect the threatened pawn, but it does ensure that when the pawn is captured with Qxe5+ and the bishop blocks on f6, the tempo used in capturing the bishop with the knight (because you're obviously not going to capture with the queen with an enemy rook on f8) will give Black the chance to play Qd4+. Now White doesn't have any better option than to accept the queen trade because the Black queen prevents checkmate being given along this diagonal. White will wind up a piece for a pawn, which should be winning, but Black will have some chances as well due to the connected passed pawns in the center (after cxd4, capturing White's queen and an eventual e5). With a player of Gligorić's caliber, that might be compensation indeed. Looking at how the game unfolded, I think Hartson made the better move in the position because it allowed Gligorić less counterplay. As you point out, after Bh5, there's no chance of moving the rook, so Black's moves are far more forced.

BTW Mr. Antonio I'm one of those guys that discovered your channel barely a week ago and am now addicted to your channel! I played chess a bit in my youth but never seriously. Actually as an adult I was taught how to play Shogi from my Japanese Father-in-law. Shogi is VERY different from chess, but I love it. It may almost be viewed as the difference between sports such as football ("Soccer" in the USA) and American football - both played on a field etc but the moves and rules are totally different. Have you ever tried Shogi? It's quite interesting if you're looking for something esoteric.

If it's seriously surely the opponent would realize if their queen would be captured in two moves. So they wouldnt go for it with their queen and you'd have pushed a pawn for no reason and potentially created a weakness.
