this is legitimately such an exciting concept for a video game, i think the only thing that would be even better would a full game booklet in the style of the era (pdf or print)

Great! This seems like a more refined and curated version of "Action 52 Owns", which was in turn an attempt to remake the "Action 52" games. Look it up!

Been waiting for this game for so many years. I love Spelunky so anything that has involvement by Derek Yu will grab my attention. Most of what they’ve shown has a pretty convincing retro vibe in both looks and philosophy even if it’s not really possible to be reproduced on the NES. My first video game ever was a gameboy pirate cartridge with 100 games (they were really just 30 that were repeated). When I was 6 I convinced my mom to buy me a game boy after weeks insisting and I didn’t even know what game to pick. When the store employee suggested me to pick a pirate compilation I didn’t even know what piracy was so first thought he meant a videogame about pirates lol. Crazy times, I doubt nowadays most stores would sell piracy in such transparent way. It was an amazing collection that had Super Mario Land, a Ninja Turtles game… They were easy games in retrospection but for a young kid who never owned a console they were so difficult and deep. I probably exchanged or gave this cartridge for free to a friend but I’d like to pick it up and try them again.

2:59 tbh the simple styles don't really seem to exist solely to make smaller games and develop them faster I can easily imagine that just drawing mid size sprites in software such as ms paint is less costly and is faster to make than pixel art Aside that nowadays it's slowly evolving to incorporate the looks of "16/32bit" eras instead of being derivates of the Famicom So it's clearly just art direction done by taste or to appeal to a certain demographic/audience

The narrative of UFO50 being a failed game console of the era also gives a few cheeky excuses to "Out of spec" moments. I can only wonder if they'll lampshade releasing a console that only works in widescreen in the 80s. So ahead of it's time.

Back in the day Arthur 'Mr. Podunkian' Lee (most remembered now for Merry Gear Solid and WASTED) did a "Action 52 Owns" kind of project with all of the games being loose freeware remakes tied to Action 52 titles. Only 23 games seem to have been completed by various authors, and there were definitely some bangers in there. In particular held "Illuminator" saved on my drive for years like a precious treasure, sharing it around acquaintances, before I discovered it was available on the autor's. "loganames" itch page! I even vaguely remember Arthur having some sort of creative beef with Derek Yu, who was running the indie-famous TIGSource. Opinionated auteurs and all that, probably Oh, uh, back to UFO50: I filed it under "I don't want to remove it from the Wishlist, but I've lost hope of seeing it released" for years. Apparently added it to the wishlist back in 14.08.2020... To think that this might release before the third chapter of Deltarune, ha!
