A German nun wrote a wonderful hymn based on Psalm 46, and a century later a pious Scottish woman translated it into English. Years later still, a famous melody was matched to the words - and a classic hymn fell into place. How many people have been deeply encouraged and strengthened by this powerful song?

LYRICS:
1. Be still, my soul: the Lord is on thy side.
Bear patiently the cross of grief or pain.
Leave to thy God to order and provide;
In every change, He faithful will remain.
Be still, my soul: thy best, thy heavenly friend
Through thorny ways leads to a joyful end.
2. Be still, my soul: thy God doth undertake
To guide the future, as He has the past.
Thy hope, thy confidence let nothing shake;
All now mysterious shall be bright at last.
Be still, my soul: the waves and winds still know
His voice who ruled them while He dwelt below.
3. Be still, my soul: when dearest friends depart,
And all is darkened in the vale of tears,
Then shalt thou better know His love, His heart,
Who comes to soothe thy sorrow and thy fears.
Be still, my soul: thy Jesus can repay
From His own fullness all He takes away.
4. Be still, my soul: the hour is hastening on
When we shall be forever with the Lord.
When disappointment, grief and fear are gone,
Sorrow forgot, love’s purest joys restored.
Be still, my soul: when change and tears are past
All safe and blessèd we shall meet at last.
5. Be still, my soul: begin the song of praise
On earth, believing, to Thy Lord on high;
Acknowledge Him in all thy words and ways,
So shall He view thee with a well pleased eye.
Be still, my soul: the sun of life divine
Through passing clouds shall but more brightly shine.

My mother got sick in 2016 and was in the hospital. She had an aneurysm that we knew was going to take her life. I brought in my iPad and put this song on repeat! I laid it on her pillow and kept it on repeat. After a week she finally succumbed to the thing that would take her home. I believe she was ushered into the Holy of Holies with this song in her heart. Thank you for sharing this song and its history.

Many years ago when l was a newborn Christian we sang this beautiful hymn, and l wrote in my hymn book that l wanted this sung at my funeral. Just this week it was broadcast that Eric Liddell, the Flying Scotsman who won a gold medal in the Paris Olympics of 1924, asked for the camp orchestra to play it outside his window when he was dying in POW camp in China.

Many years ago, I had been working on memorizing this hymn. Then we got the call that my mother's father was dying; we piled into the car and headed across the state, trying to get there in time to say goodbye. And I was able to sing it for my mother on the trip, which found very comforting and encouraging. Who could have expected that? 🌺🙏🌺

He requested this song be song by his fellow prisoners as he was drawing his last breath. I always think of his life whenI hear this.

Going on 62 years of disabling migraine headaches, CPTSD and many other challenges and I can honestly say that praising God in all things is such a powerful tool. against any enemy lies that try to make us doubt God's love. Thank you for this video. Romans 8:28; 2 Corinthians 10:4-5; Ephesians 5:20. What a blessing it is when you finally have the understanding that God is good all the time, and, all the time, God is good. Believe it and enter into His precious, life-changing rest.

Earlier this week my Mom heard this well known hymn with it's beautiful tune 'Finlandia' on "Songs of Praise" which was held this year in St Giles Cathedral, Edinburgh. They are commemorating the 100th Anniversary since Eric Liddell won the Olympic gold medal in the men's 400m race. He was known as the 'Flying Scotsman' and you will know of him from the movie "Chariots of Fire". He was due to run in the 100m race but because the heats were being run on a Sunday he pulled out of the race. He decided to enter the 400m race as the heats were run on a Friday. He served as a missionary in China for many years. Unfortunately he was taken prisoner in Japan in the Second World War. While there he became very ill. In hospital he asked that the Salvation Army play this hymn for him outside his window which they did. Unfortunately he died there at the early age of 43.

I have leaned on this hymn for His providence and strength. I lost my husband July 1 and my mother-in-law August 1. Grief has been near and raw and though the emotions come in waves, I have to remind myself that His eternal promises are more real and true than what we know to be real. It is hard to describe and being in that dark place I know He is carrying me though the tempest rages. Thank you for singing this as I had not heard all the verses before.

There was a time in my life when I was making a major decision. I was not at peace and was wrestling with my decision. I was up all night playing about it and to this day, I don't know if I fell asleep and was dreaming or what, but in the middle of the night, I heard this song (no, my radio was not on) as clear as day. I don't know if the song was audible or not, but I clearly heard it. I was familiar with the song, but at the time, it was as a while since I sung it or heard it. The words "The Lord is on thy side", "Leave to thy God to order and provide," and in every change, He faithful will reman" have a special meaning to me and I was able to give my decision to God and completely trust Him with the outcome.

Hello from Nebraska. I love the classical piece Finlandia. I also think the words to their national anthem are very sweet. I believe he wrote this as WWI looked inevitable, to encourage his fellow Finlandiers. I have loved "Be Still My Soul" since I first heard it as a child. The verses describe so well the Father's love for us through the different challenges we face living in this fallen world. I learned to trust the Lord through years of seeking children and finally having our family, and in the loss of a newborn. I saw the face of God smile with love as He comforted us. And now He walks with me as I live with Crohn's disease. I am so grateful that Jesus was willing to die for us, and that He calls us His friends. Thank you for spotlighting this beautiful hymn.

What a wonderful hymn... one of my favorites. The Lord gave the idea for me to have a ministry to nursing and private homes that care for people in my rural area in Illinois/USA. I share my testimony first and then share 4 hymns and 4 patriotic songs, alternating between the two, tell the story behind them, I read at least one verse, sing the first verse, and play them on my violin. I encourage attendees to sing along. I end this time of ministering with passing out a one page that gives the plan of salvation with Scriptures, some thoughts about the importance of having a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and ending with a sample prayer to receive God's gift of forgiveness. All glory goes to God, Jesus and the Holy. Spirit!!!

Be Still my soul: the Lord is on thy side often comes into my mind during the night hours or when things are not going right. I used to know it properly when young but over the past years my memory isn't what it used to be & so only snatches of songs float into my memory via the Holy Spirit. I particularly like the last verse as it is one of hope so it is a pity it isn't sung more often as it is truly a crescendo to the song.

Luke this is SO beautiful. This was the hymn my mother-in-law loved and we sang it at her funeral - that was her request before she walked through the veil and into His glorious presence. But we had no idea there was a final verse rarely sung. Oh how she would have loved that - but we will love it for her and for ourselves! In a world of turmoil and brokenness, your very voice brings calm. I feel so encouraged after hearing your video and I have subscribed. I shall be tuning in again, and again, and again....... I can't pick out a favourite verse of line because I love the whole hymn, and you sang it so beautifully I felt I was floating into Heaven. I am thanking God that your video seemed to 'happen' as I was looking for another hymn on KZbin. I have been so greatly blessed and will share this with my hubby. Thankyou Luke for today’s Hymn history. Truly wonderful words. I particularly was drawn to the words to be still my soul because God rules over the tumult of our lives, just as he ruled the wind and the waves when He was here on earth. I am wondering if you could look at “The Day Thou Gavest Lord Is Ended”. To me this hymn talks about the saints of God on whom the day is dawning keeps watch whilst the saints for whom the night is coming will take rest. Naturally a song never sung now and in fact rarely sung that I particularly remember.

This song was the famous Olympic runner Eric Liddle. He later became a missionary to China and died there in a prison camp. God bless

Thanks Luke for your explanation of this beautiful hymn today, and for your performance of it- both voice and piano.
