Hymn tune: FINALNDIA, from Jean Sibelius' (1865 - 1957) symphonic poem Finlandia.
Text: Original German text ("Stille meine Wille, dein Jesus hilft siegen") written by Katharina von Schlegel (1697 - 1768) in 1752. Translated into English in 1855 by Jane Laurie Borthwick (1813 - 1897).
This hymn was sung at The Grenfell Tower National Memorial Service on 14 December 2017 at St Paul's Cathedral, to mark the 6 month anniversary of the Grenfell Tower Fire.

I am a Finn and this English-language version comes as a bit of a shock because I never knew such a version existed (I apologize for my ignorance in this context). However, to us in Finland this hymn is known as "Finlandia" and always will be. Finlandia is our national treasure in Finnish lyrics, depicting what Finland is and what we the Finns are. ♥️

Jean Sibelius composed this hymn-part of Finlandia 1899 to make Finnish nation stronger to fight against the tyrranny of Russia. I wrote my student diplom 1985 of it. The indepency of Finland was finally got second time 1944 in 2nd world war. My granddad had to give his life in the war against Russia. ❤ The original indepency was released 6.12.1917 and V.I. Lenin confirmed it 31.12.1917. I also have performed Finlandia hymn in many choirs (alto) and I can assure everyone it is wonderful everytime.

So perhaps I can clarify that while the music and Finnish lyrics were written by Jean Sibelius and talk of Finland's national pride, the Christian hymn comes from a poem written in 1697 that was later put with Sibelius's music. It is not a translation from the original Finnish song. It is a poem that is a person in deep turmoil, pain, and fear calling out to God to steady their faith and calm their soul. Being American but with a Finnish mother, I love and am deeply touched by both! This service was held after the horrific Grenfell apartment fire in London that claimed 72 lives and injured 70 in 2017. The impact on the hearts and psyche of Londoners and the world was greatly affected. Sibelius' music and Katharina Amalia Dorthea von Schlegel's poem were expressing what everyone was feeling at that moment.

Sisu to all Finns. My mother grew up near by Sibelius. He was a very old man when she was a young girl and would yell at her and her brothers as they played behind his house. I'm a finnish musician and have played Sibelius masterpeace Finlandia maybe 100 times in different versions, also with choir. Never heard before the version in englisch. Anyway the hymn is a part of Finlandia. It is composed at a time when Finland was a part of Sovjet. In the premiere at the university of Helsinki the titel in the program was something else, because of the pressure from the authority. Anyway the original lyrics are a statement of freedom and independent.

Have been singing this in church for over 70 years & it was one of the first tunes I learned to play on my clarinet. It is absolutely bizarre to see this piece sung as a casual hymn about higher things. When Jean Sibelius wrote this, it was an act of protest against the Russian rule in Finland. It is a piece of national romanticism that lifted the spirits of our nation. The original full composition is called Finlandia, but because of the Russian government he had to cal it "Fantasia". (Funnily enough Disney did use this in 'Fantasia')

Music has no boundaries. It's art and goes beyond geographical borders and political thinkings. Finlandia was just a song about Finland's struggle and only Finns would have related to it but when nearly 100 years ago the tune was adopted for such a powerful hymn, it became a global song. If you pay attention to the lyrics, they are so beautiful comforting people in despair and pain. A person telling his/her soul to be still against all odds and strifes as God shall walk them out of it. It's a very-very powerful hymn for a believer. It can bring you to your knees with tears and it can also uplift you with hope while it may have no meaning at all if you don't believe in God and Christ. However, we see it, it's not reducing its patriotic Finnish value but adding a spiritual meaning to it for the world to sing and love it. 😊

Jean Sibelius's tone poem Finlandia was completed as an orchestral work already in 1899. At first, the work was not intended to be sung. The words of the currently performed Finlandia anthem were written by V.A. Koskenniemi in 1940, but the anthem was written and performed before Koskenniemi. Tenor Wäinö Sola, who had given concerts in America, brought the words to Sibelius' hymn when he came to Finland in 1937. The first words of the Finlandia anthem were written in America as early as 1919, and American Finns sang Finlandia in their choral performances on the new continent.

Thy hope, thy confidence let nothing shake; All now mysterious shall be bright at last. Be still, my soul: The waves and winds still know His voice who ruled them while he dwelt below. Be still, my soul: The hour is hastening on When we shall be forever with the Lord, When disappointment, grief, and fear are gone, Sorrow forgot, love's purest joys restored. To be honest this feels a bit cultural appropriation - to take our precious national hymn which is composed to tell about Finland's sacrifices and oppression under Russian terror and the uprising of the Finns and banishing of the foe just to turn it into a religious song. Please do use the original words by VA Koskenniemi (English translation by Keith Bosley).

I notice Prince William and Harry there, as I rewatch this hymn today. I am reminded of the absolute astonishing prayers that I/we said for your lovely Mother. I know Prince Harry thinks "what does she know!" yet believe me in the Godly/Heavenly vision I sometimes experience their Dear Mother Diana, truly is "Heavenly alive" in the Higher Place of God! She is perfected in His utmost Bounty,Light and Love! Honestly! Your truly loving look, Prince William is justified, and God truly loves your Mother, you and Harry, our Queen Elizabeth II and us. Our Queen Elizabeth II, is very special to me because God has truly during my very short stay on earth, occasionally, spiritually connected me "through, with and in" Love( i.e. God) to her. Obviously God loves her, Queen Elizabeth II too, here on earth. One has to admire her: "whether it be long or short" (her pure promise to us her people), through her unrelenting untiring service to her (often) ungrateful people! Anyway, just saying that I share in the tears and the love guys! So looking forward to that Heavenly reunion filled and eternally over flowing with great wonderful perfect love for all eternity. God Bless, Love, Guide and Protect you and all eternally. He won't fail you and loves you evermore! Eternally! Lots of genuine Love in God, Anne (from Scotland UK) xxx 💖😘💖
