Jocelin, I am a 5'5" male and I got my first adventure bike last month, a 2018 KTM 1090 Adventure R. Your videos inspired me and gave me confidence to get a dirt worthy bike with a tall seat height! Something unexpected happened as well- my friends who are also riders and are 5'8" - 6' tall, who have never had a problem flat footing their motorcycles got onto my KTM and were immediately blown away by how tall it was and were not comfortable to ride something they could not flat foot. They were also blown away that I have no problem riding the bike, and it's thanks to your videos :)

Hi Jocelin from another shortie on the other side of the pond in the UK. I am really loving your videos as there have been lots of people talking about small people riding big bikes and offering some good advice, but its nothing like seeing a little shortie riding a big old beast so nicely to really say, YES it can be done and it can be fun. I've been riding a smallish adv bike for 10 years now and last month upgraded to a bigger model where I can't reach the ground. On the way home from picking it up I encountered problems in the road and I ended up dropping it whilst manovering. This managed to make me terribly wary of the bike, always thinking I was going to drop it when coming to a stop and not letting me relax and really enjoy the bike. I've been doing a few of the excersies you've shown and it is really helping me to relax, feel in control and enjoy it. Here is a suggestuion for a good topic you could address and I would be really interested in seeing, Paddling the bike backwards. We all have to do it sometimes but when the feet don't get to the ground so easy, how do you manage that? Anyway, you go very easy and I will look forward to the next ephisode. Cheers Dave

Hey Jocelin, another viewer from the UK here... You might be interested to hear that I'm 6'5" tall, and I find your videos so helpful even though I can flat foot on my GSA. What I've found important from your videos is to learn how to tackle problems as though I wasn't the height that I am - because instinctively I go to put my foot down or reach out to yank the bike back - and that only leads to injury and doesn't improve my riding skills, doesn't develop control skills and doesn't build confidence. So - Thank you!

Wow! Just wow. You can’t imagine how happy this makes me, I never thought taller riders would find my videos worth watching. You have a unique perspective, and approach to riding and I think it’s great! Thanks for your message, and for watching.

A few years back I suffered back problems, which led to sciatic problems, first in one leg, then the other. Compensating movements during that time has led to other issues - all part of getting older really! But the biggest effect is how it affected my confidence in so many things. Pain - associated with movement causes the body or a person to tense and be less relaxed - and less likely to rely on natural strength and leverage like I might’ve done in the past. I’ve found these videos hugely beneficial.

VANESSA O KEEFFE hahahaha I’m glad you found some of the subtle humor we tucked into the video. “Impress your friends”, pink panther, lol. Brock is a riot naturally and yes, he’s an ANIMAL crazy strong. He’s a perfect riding buddy to take on the trails, I get us into a tricky situation and he just picks the bikes up and asked me where I’d like him to put them 😆. One time, we lost a 1200 over a steep embankment in the middle of nowhere, as the sun was setting. I thought we were doomed. That is when I learned of his incredible strength. Together we got that beast back up on the trail and made it out just after dark. ... thanks for watching!

Hi Jocelin, Thanks for the videos - I have just discovered them. Being a disabled rider with 5’5” on my left leg and 5’3” on my right (limited weight bearing) I was always stopping with my left leg down (out of preference) and panicking if the road had an adverse camber, ruts, potholes etc that might mean I wouldn’t be able to touch the ground. Your helpful tips for short riders help build confidence and develop a toolbox of handy ‘tricks’ works well for me as a ‘variable height’ rider. Tinkering with your advice through practice (and lots of mistakes) means I have been able to develop some coping strategies of my own. Having that extra level of assurance and skill makes riding even more enjoyable. Keep up the good work - we never stop learning…

I'm just realising my Africa Twin's DCT transmission won't let me take it for a walk that way - no clutch lever: it's a fly-by-wire auto box. I suspect I could do it on the other side using the throttle maybe but they've a tendency to be a bit snatchy on take-off. Bret Tkacs recommends dragging the rear brake for low speed stuff on this basis: with the brake full on the DCT box won't feed too much power to the chain, just hold it in tension, so for most riding it's not an issue, but I'm realising being able to take it for a walk like your manual BMW would be useful for loading it in a van or whatever to take to places when I don't want to ride hundreds of miles to get there.

Well that turn was quite something, definitely wish I had that upper body strength to get out of tight stuff by just carrying the bike out of anything. Got to be said my biggest struggle has always been just the stupid stuff with tall bikes, getting them off the side stand, keeping balance with just tippy toes, but with your techniques I got on to a Triumph XC no problem and I'm putting a deposit tomorrow on one of my dream bikes that I'd never thought I'd be able to ride, so thanks!!! I'm sure the thing will go down if I ever have to do an emergency stop on an incline, but at least I can ride it and then work on that. Haha don’t be jealous, I’m jealous that you are taller than me. 😆 hang in there, keep practicing, you will nail it too!!! Attitude, balance, confidence and discipline! 😊 thank you for watching!

Love your videos Jocelin! Ok I am 5'10" and have ridden BMW road bikes for a long time. For adventure bike I went Honda Africa Twin Adventure Sports. Highest seat of all adventure bikes and very top heavy. Also I am 65 so no spring chicken! I am going to try a bunch of your training tips as I love this bike but not very comfortable on it when stopping and even finding the right angle to put the side stand down on. I have a DCT so can't do the clutch work but a lot of the other stuff will help me out! Follow a lot of moto bloggers and hope Doddle on a motorcycle has a chance to take some lessons with you, that would be great to watch!!

Thank you for your message Jim! 5’10” - you’re a giant!! Lol 😆 but seriously, it makes my day to hear you have found these videos useful. The AT is a great bike, I recently tried the DCT model so I could better understand what it’s like without a clutch lever. It was interesting and took some getting used to, and yes, that seat height is tall!! Please keep me updated on your progress with your new beast! I’m glad you watch Doodle too, she’s awesome! It would be so sun if the two of us could get together and ride, maybe you could join us! 😁

@@JocelinSnow hey Jocelin - I was wondering if at some point in the future if you can do an episode on how you ride in Deep sand? Took my Tenere 700 out today into the New Jersey Pine Barrens (which has a lot of segments of deep sand) and it totally kicked my butt! (dropped my bike 7 times! lol) - just curious if you had any tricks for shorter riders for getting through the sand?
@JocelinSnow
@JocelinSnow 4 жыл бұрын
I’m sorry to hear the deep sand kicked your butt, that is a common result with the big bikes in the sand. I have some trucks that helped me dial in the sand in the Mongolia desert. Please see episode 2 or build your own challenge course. Here is the link. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eXmxfmePq9yVp5I Thanks for watching!

Hey jocelin, I'm 169 cms. Would I have any problem in riding in traffic in a bike of 835mm seat height?
@JocelinSnow
@JocelinSnow Жыл бұрын
Well first I had to get my US to metric system conversion tool out haha. You are taller than I am, so you should be able to manage any bike. 835mm seat height works out to be about 32.8” which is about what my KTM 500 dirt bike seat height is. It’s possible but depending on what your inseam is, you may find that you have to slide off the seat to get one foot down. (Dog on a fire hydrant) Your other foot may dangle above the foot peg, while you cradle the seat under your knee. It works, that’s how I ride tall bikes. Best of luck! Thanks for watching.

Arthur B thank you! No, my mirrors do not vibrate at all. There are a couple tricks. First, use the short or medium arms, not the long. Next, make sure the spring end of the clamp is mounted to the ball on the bar, not the ball on the mirror.

Hi Jocelin, what kind of boots do you wear? I’m having trouble finding good boots in my size.
@JocelinSnow
@JocelinSnow 10 ай бұрын
Hello Natalie! I wear the Alpinestars Youth Tech7S (the S is for short I think) I’ve been wearing this boot for like 20 years (they used to be called tech 6s) They last me about a year. I’ve never broken a foot or an ankle while wearing these so I’ll keep wearing them. I’m a Women’s 7, so I wear a youth 6 (or sometimes I get a 5 for use in the supper with a thinner sock) I hope this helps

I’ve owned all brands of motorcycles, over 50 actually, and many different styles. I do still have a couple KTM dirt bikes. The BMW can do it all, it’s my go to these days. I like the freedom to ride long distances, long trips, carve mountain roads, explore back roads, challenge myself on dirt trails, pack my camping gear, easy Maintenace, etc. The on the fly ride modes, adjustable electronic suspension, smooth motor, heated grips, full color tft display, wonder wheel, gps…. The list goes on and on… it’s an incredible machine.
