Working on the foundations is the best way to improve your skills. In this video I will talk you through a series of exercises you can do to help you improve your riding skills. I had the opportunity to ride with Johnny Mac of Fast Bikes and Michelin. It was Johns first time off road so this was a great test to see how the exercises went. Let me know what you think!

Another top video Vanessa. Being a bit older I learned to ride bikes in the early 80's back when the electrics were for the ignition and lights, that was it. I also took training back in the day to pass my test that included braking, front only, back only and both together. For faster cornering use the rear brake only as applying the front will make the bike stand up and miss the corner. Back then the rule of thumb was 75% front and 25% rear brake on a dry road changing to 50-50 in the wet. I had a short time off road with my old DT175 Yamaha and Kawasaki KMX200 (both were stolen) and I had a real hoot on the byways that were legal off road routes for bikes back then. All good stuff with great advice to anyone who rides a bike. Many thanks for sharing. Whoop! A shame I can't ride now but I can still appreciate the fun watching you youngsters having a blast as I did when I was younger.

Amazing! Have you ever thought about setting up a training business? You'd kill it! Kudos to John for being able to approach this with a beginner's mind, despite his skills and experience, and having an awesome attitude. I'm also an experienced street rider (though not fast or accomplished) who just got a dual-sport and started riding dirt a couple months ago. It's really been a lot of fun to be a novice again. I've taken two classes and, although they kicked my butt, I already want to go back. It's humbling and confidence-building at the same time. I wish I'd started this way.

Great video, and a great attitude and enthusiasm by all involved. Rather than large strong guy learning (as most videos have), I would have liked to have seen a session with a 5'2 (159cm), 50kg woman who's a relatively new rider. It looks like the Triumph schools are only using the Tiger, or the Scrambler 1200 at the moment, both of which are pretty big, heavy and intimidating for some riders.

Nice tips for offroad beginers that will use it forever until they become mechanised and not have to think about it anymore, good job! One Tip, when lifting the bike with the squat dont try to pull it up, bend your knees press your back against the seat and push it back streching your legs. all the power comes from the legs pushing the bike against the weels on the ground, not from the arms. I have an old BMW 1150 GS Adv I know what it is ... Keep Riding Life is a ride

Top job Vanessa, you sure can ride off road. I am nearly 80 and I can still lift my VStrom 650 up on my own using the various techniques you demonstrated. When I can’t lift it on my own I will have to buy a lighter bike. There is one more technique which works in the right situation. As you said depending on the circumstances Lay prone on the ground, grab the handle bar an get a firm grip on something towards the rear of the bike and then keeping your arms straight, push your chest into the seat , and then with your legs start walking forward as if you were trying to push the bike sideways. The bike will not slide sideways it will start standing up. This technique may be easier on your hip. I love to see competent female riders, they are every bit as good as men.

Good stuff Vanessa. I have been reliably informed and tried having the front wheel pointing up when you do the handle bar lift as it makes the lever between the handlebar and the front wheel longer and therefor easeir to pick up. You missed no 5 get 2 people aka someone else to pick it up for you, by far the easiest of the lot.

I cannot stress how important it is to start off road with somebody who knows things. Especially for novice rider. I have no clue how I'm still alive and didn't even get seriously injured. I found myself in stupid situations, lost count of crashes and few times I thought I lost bike too but, somehow we both made it. I would have called rescue few times but, I knew Mrs would put an end to my riding 😄 So, be smart and find yourself a hot teacher like Vanessa or, at least a teacher.

Hi Vanessa, I had a bit of trouble my last time out on a steep decline, my speed just kept increasing, when I used my front brake it wanted to lock up, when I used my back brake it felt like it wasn’t doing much. I was in off road mode in my pan America, would off road pro made a difference? Or am I better having a nanny mode to help until my skill increase? Thanks for any advice

Curious. Does standing on the pegs for a u-turn solve a particular practical problem? Maybe I missed it--I thought you stand on the pegs to see further and to use your legs to dampen rough terrain (so it doesn't transfer to your core) at higher speeds. Honest question. I ride a V-Strom 90/10 off-road. If I need to do a u-turn on a gravel road (which will always be inclined) I'm going to minimize the possibility of dropping the bike.

Bwahahah!!1! I expect the revenge for the butt-roughing hoax from the track day! 😏🤭 Nooo, Johnny got away clean. You are too kind! 😏🥴 What keeps surprising me is how much abuse the clutches will take when they are the multiple plates in oil-kind. You'd be replacing dry clutches by the dozen, using them like that. I guess that's one of the hardest things to learn, that these oil clutches can handle loads of work. Right, I'll nick a bike and practice right away! 🤗 P.S.: An ace video, you're the perfect instructor! 💪🤗

I agree but when the bike is gear shifter down that is no possible so good to be in the practice with both outcomes. Also a lot less likely to have drops in neutral I guess so that's a bonus

Do people in in the uk just ride in straight lines everywhere? Most of these are all basic skills any road rider should have. Full dirtbikes arent ridden with weight turning in either they are ridden like with foot on pegs and weight outside of turn to keep traction. I suppose the weight of thede bikes is why its different

If you're a girl on a bike don't try to be a man on a bike, if it's too big for you then select a size that fits. I see too many females try to ride bikes that are made for much larger people to handle just so they can "compete with the boys", well it's not about that, it's about selecting the right size for you. If you can't pick the bike up off it's side then it's too big for you. Any bike you choose you should be able to pick up off it's side without really straining yourself.
@TheGirlOnABike

That feels like a sexist comment dude. I'm stronger than many guys. I also think it is a very variable need. When I'm on a Harley-Davidson road bike I never need to be able to pick it up. It's totally dependant. And a Tiger 900 Rally Pro is definitely pick up able. I'd love for you to watch my 1000 Dunas Wales to Africa series as I take the Tiger into the dunes in a rally. Sometimes it's about pushing the limits just because we can, that's how we grow.
