Pretty sure that's the last time a pro golfer and his caddy actually connected on a high five too

What an achievement from Hal. He stopped a runaway train dead in its tracks, but Tiger took defeat with grace and congratulated Sutton properly. Class Golf all round.

Good call. Tiger, who was clearly the man at this point, looks pretty gracious in shaking Hal's hand. I hadn't noticed it until rewatching just now (and I vividly remember watching this live in 2000); it harkened to Jack shaking Tom Watson's hand in 1982 - and Tiger Woods' career was hardly known for keen sportsmanship (let alone in comparison to Jack's).

Yes, Teegs Woods took it well...nice handshake.

What a great story. 20 years later and I still love seeing this every time. I love that fire in Hal Sutton’s eyes. He was definitely ready to rock and roll.

Usually when you think "2000 in Golf" you ONLY think of what a godly year Tiger had, but thanks to this one-liner we can all remember he was actually human that year. :) Gotta hand it to Sutton for sticking it to Tiger despite being 18 years older. Obviously Tiger would have the last laugh for the year 2000 but this has to count for something.

Tiger had the prototype ball nobody else had, longer and a better wind ball, it said Nike but Bridgestone engineers came up with it and was based on the Strata Ball used by Mark O’Meara to win 2 majors in 1998

I think I this may have been the only time I remember rooting against Tiger. I still can't believe Hal Sutton is now remembered for being the losing Ryder Captain who paired Tiger & Phil. He was a real bulldog when he wanted to play.
@TheLocalLt Жыл бұрын
Hal was put in a very difficult position at the Ryder Cup (mainly by Phil with his equipment switch), but he should not have pressed ahead with pairing Phil and Tiger, and especially shouldn’t have put them back out after losing once. So the whole situation could have been better handled by all. That being said, you’re right it should not diminish Sutton’s legacy, including his Ryder Cup legacy. Sure you can point to the loss in 2004, but you also have to look Sutton carrying the team for most of the week in 1999, enabling the epic Sunday comeback (in which Sutton also led the charge)

Hal was so focused that day. One shot at a time. Full focus. I remember the interview before the round, media intimating to Hal that he was up against it and maybe hadn’t got much chance. Hal was having none of it though and reminded them Tiger was a man (not a God) and every morning got out of bed and put his pants on just like he did!

I think Hal can say that it was the right club on that day.

I love this kind of golf, 179 6 iron. Today these guys would be hitting a 9 or PW. I truly believe that they need to limit what these guys are doing. 225 they used to hit a 1 iron not a 7 iron. Get the game under control. Hal and his caddie were a great team, his caddie sure knew his game.
@awesomegolfcourses3 жыл бұрын
Agree with you and also something to point out is clubs today are “stronger” in regards to loft. What used to be called a 7 iron back in early 2000’s is now an 8 iron if you’re looking at loft.

Hal wanted to play a 5 iron but his caddy insisted he play a 6 iron as Hal was pumped on adrenaline. Hal went with the 6 and it was the right club today. At least that’s the story I heard on the TPC sawgrass guided tour

Whatever happened to strata? Blast from the past
@GilbertLittle2 жыл бұрын
Strata was owned by Spalding Sports which was owned by KKR. Spalding filed bankruptcy around 2002 or 03. Callaway purchased the assets of Spalding for all the old "Topflite" and Strata ball patents. The current Callaway golf balls have some of the old Strata technology. Spalding also owned the Ben Hogan brand which they sold to they guy who owns Perry Ellis brands. Google Ben Hogan Golf Equipment Company when you have a moment.

That was Hal's classic move. He was always very steep on his takeaway but at the top he shallowed his swing. Best ball striker between the 80's through early 2000's.
