Took my brand new Battle II 5000 for a spin yesterday for the very first time and I hooked a 20lb yellowtail using a Ugly Stik X2 (medium hard) rod kzbin.infoUgkxM68VkfsQhHaabDce1IwOCXuvumcpbZ_k . This combo was recommended on some website and it did not disappoint me. The reel is smooth, the drag click is pretty cool cause i think it adds to the excitement of fighting the fish, personally the drag is my favorite part. I use braid and 300 yards will fill the entire spool. This combo is my main setup from now on although I have to disclose I am new to fishing.

Loved the "reading the water" segment. Knowing how you select your spots, how the tide (in/out) changes what you see are great added tips. BTW, my Dad uses a stella when he fishes with me for salmon in AK with all the silty mud. I give him a hard time about it too. Fishing with Dad...priceless.

Thanks guys, another great video. I had a Stella 4000. It was actually the previous model & (only) about $780.00. I lost it. I was packing my rods into the back of my truck when my wife called me so I lent the rods against the bed & got in my truck as it was pouring down with rain. I got distracted then drove off with them still leaning on my truck. About 10 minutes later I remembered, & drove back, but they had gone. A Stella, 2 St Croix rods & a Stradic. A tough lesson to learn. I spend a lot on rods & reels. I know I won't have to replace them if I take care of them. P.S. I haven't lost anything since.

I'm looking forward to beach fishing trips next spring and getting the right gear. I have an old Hatteras Heaver as thick as a broom stick to the tip and similar ancient Penn reels. I'll definitely update to a long modern rod and matching reel, but you've inspired me to use my antiques too. If I get good practicing with my old heaver again, I'll be able to cast anything new with ease. Another point about your Dad's expensive gear is fishing heavy tackle all day can wear you out and the smoother gear means less wear on shoulder joints and tendons.

Your theory on used vintage equipment for beginners is spot on. Now, the reasoning behind the High end gear for more seasoned folks is longevity. I started off like many others using bargain equipment. As I became more involved in the sport I found that the bargain equipment, reels specifically, just weren’t lasting more than a year. Being in Texas I’m blessed to be able to fish not only the gulf coast (2 hour drive), but also two power plant cooling lakes (15-30 minute drive). So, I started progressively getting better gear when I could. And not only does that gear last much longer but I’m able to fish more variety of fish/waters because the higher end gear can be used for both. For example, my Shimano Stradic 2500, $300, can be used for pulling in everything from perch to bull red fish. For example, I can take that same reel and put it on a 7’ high modulus blank/rod and fish the shore at the lakes. Than I can put that same reel on a 9’ rod and throw lures in the surf. Now as for the Stella, I use my Stella for big game fish in the surf and on the occasional deep sea charter for tuna. The only difference is in the surf it’s attached to a 12’ heavy surf rod chunking 3-5oz plus bait where as in the charter for yellow fin I’ve switched out spools from 30lbs braid to 60lbs braid chunking lures on an 7’ Heavy custom rod built for tuna fishing. Also, one of the natural things about using the higher end gear is that you will be much more confident in going after the bigger game fish than you would be using a $20 Reel because it is just built better. Those technologies that have been put into the Stella have also been put into some of Shimano’s mid priced products as well. I’ll end it with a funny story from years ago fishing the surf of Padre National Seashore here with a great friend that showed up with a bargain surf combo. It was mid November and we ran into the bull reds pretty hot and heavy. They were cruising the second gut. Well after he’s second bull red he’s reel busted. The main shaft literally bent and bound up causing the main gear to strip. I was using an older Shimano bait runner 5000 series and managed to land 27 bull reds that weekend without a hiccup. But the short answer to your original question is as you start to up your game/skill set you’ll start to look at better gear.

I bought a few Shimano for less than $30 and they have been with me for 15 years still. $1000 dollar real, for some fishermen fishing is love, feeling good like driving a very expensive car or expensive watch. So the intend purposes are different. They feel so good having and talking about them. You know love costs!

SHIMANO is known for building and making gears for bicycles before starting to make fishing reels. So the way the gears for the Stella is built and how the whole reel is put together is just awsome and to me i think the price is YOU PAY FOR WHAT YOU GET...i love SHIMANO, ACCURATE (first dual side twindrag), and Diawa...its just a personal preference for what type of fish you are fishing for and how you want to use it. I caught a 100lb BFT on my dad SHIMANO SERAGOSA 20000 (it took 1hr45mins)...caught a 145lbs BFT on my STELLA and it was exciting and so smooth, i shut all of the other guys that call the Spinner reels COFFEE GRINDER up real fast...!!!!!

Dad's Stella reel cost $1649.00NZ...that is far more than all my fishing rods, reels, tackle, nets, waders and whatever gear combined. Great to see you picking up rubbish. I do the same. I collect and restore vintage surf fishing spinning reels. They are infinitely better quality and much more durable than all but the most \e\\\xpensive modern reels. I guarantee you I can match the fishing ability of someone fishing with a Van Staal. These vintage reels will outlast any modern spinning reel. Many have marine brass gears that cannot corrode. Vintage reels need a lot of upkeep but if done correctly they will last for generations. These reels also grow in value over time for collectors. I have reels going back to the 1940s that are now worth hundreds of dollars. Good brass bushings last much longer than bearings. For me, rods are another issue entirely. I don’t know them as well but I know what works for me. I love you and your family together. Really enjoyable video. I am now a new subscriber. I really appreciate your ecological emphasis! Just recently discovered your channel, really like your down-to-earth tutorials and makes me wanna go out and fish! I personally go for the mid-priced reels (~$200) like the Penn Spinfisher V3500 which is capable of light to medium-heavy action and versatile enough for squidding, bottom fishing, jigging and even trolling when using the right rod set-up. It's my reel of choice 99% of the time. My friends on the other hand spend tons on their Shimano Stellas and Daiwa Saltigas but that's because they're diehard enthusiasts and they see it as a long-term investment - these reels have a lot more finesse it really is like comparing a Bentley to a Chevrolet! The drag is silky smooth, they're tough and powerful which is perfect for game fish, they're corrosion resistant and water-resistant (sealed from within with magnetic lubricant) so they'll last many seasons if you look after them well. When you're fishing during a feeding frenzy and I'm talking about fish on every couple seconds after casting that's when you begin to see the difference, your $1200 Stella is going to pay dividends because it handles better, casts better and you'll get a higher catch rate. Or when you hit that 60-pound sailfish...hahaha.

I do have a Stella that I bought 3 years..you get what you pay..Compared with my other reels All shimano and a Van Staal (which I only use for plugging) you can feel the big difference on the smoothness and even how it feels on your hands .. tons of drag and super lightweight..plus last year I sent it to shimano in CA for simple service and they replaced almost every ball bearings and some other small parts for free ..zero problems

Love the vintage gear. I’m all about the penn spinfisher reels have a bunch of greenies and z series reels. Love the Mitchell reels too. One of my favorites is an old crack 300 that my dad gave me before he passed away. Also love some of the old fiberglass rods from Fenwick, lamiglas and st croix. My favorite pompano rod is a 13’ st croix 513 coastal series from 1975. I have plenty of modern gear but it’s fun to bust out the old stuff every once in awhile

Great points, really appreciate "the cut the wasted line." As a rule of thumb for fish to be released, I hold my breath in the de hooking process. If I can't get the fish released in the time I can hold my breath I try to get back in the water so it can breath as well.

The Stella? Well in the Stella's defense, try bolting it to a fishing rod and trying to catch a fish. No one really buys one. Don't get me wrong, I'd probably kill to have one and I know how happy the owners are - but at the end of the day looking the choices I just get the Stradic. Sure, the Stella is better. Is it 4-10x better. Can a reel be? I'd argue not. Even the freshwater Stella is actually saltwater-proof... but supposedly so is the Stradic so not really much of a justification? I guess the Stella's justification is it is an experimental, price-is-no-object halo model for shits and giggles. A lot of the cool technologies we see in Shimano's mid-high end reels like the Stradic started life in the Stella a generation ago. For that reason, it's great. So fancy rich assholes, by all means, keep buying them. They fund our middle-class dreams lol. You're welcome to use this in your Economics classes as the few cases in history of trickle-down economics actually working. I wasn't sure if I should vote you up or down - I got a giggle so I went with up.

Your reel is well designed the way it is. You can cast it with out raising the bail. also it is designed to automatically pickup the line after a cast and begin the line retrieval by using the half bail bent out as it is. Good purchase.

Stellas and similar reels are usually targeted for catching big fish that take a lot of drag out. So you need that strength from the reel so it doesnt break as well as that drag power so the big fish dont strip you clean on line

I don't think that you'll going to have any kind of problems with the rumer reel, it's a very good French reel, I bought this reel in 1983 and I catch a lot of fishes, included a 65 pound tarpon. Good luck

I own a few Stella's and while I agree they are expensive, it is for a reason. The build quality, durability and power are unmatched. These reels perform at 100%, 100% of the time. You can catch a monster fish and have confidence that your equipment won't fail. When you're a finesse fishermen everything is a factor and your equipment is a representation of yourself. Perfect knots, correct rod for reel, proper line and hooks, etc. You're talking about a totally different experience from a novice. Having said all that - a 30 dollar rod and reel combo is all you need to start. What you definitely do need is knowledge. I've fished with spools of line before when I'm traveling for work and find a body of water. The most important thing is knowledge and technique.

8k stella with 100lb braid on an ocea jigging rod brought up pb tuna @142lbs well worth the money smoothest drag and the reel has not been service in well over 4 years and still smooth like a new one.

Hi Brendan,i am a keen follower of your channel and would like to advise you a nice reel .Why don t you try to purchase a Peerless Bam(there s a vintage one on Ebay right now ,Peerless Bam 600),this is the only French brand remaining on the the market,new as well if you check their website which is also in English.They are my brand of choice and have been in the family for over 45 years now.Very durable and simple to maintain(even the new ones).Have a look in your spare time you ll be delighted.Pricewise very acceptable even for new ones and extremely affordable for vintage pieces. To be honest, the Stella SW was built to take big fishes, it shines when you are consistently handling fish over 30lbs. You can only feel the smoothness of the reel when catching smaller fishes. When hooked to the big ones the drag is amazing strong, yet very smooth!

Your Dad Rocks. You get what you pay for. Shimano are the best reels out there i like the Van stalls also but for smoothness you can't go wrong even the lower end shimano reels are super smooth and durable.

Erin, I love that you have a plastics awareness campaign. The new buzzword is microplastics. Plastic doesn't degrade, it just gets ground into tiny particles that are now part of our Earthwide weather system. If the plastic gets thrown in the trash, it ends up in the ocean, where a whirlpool bigger than Texas exists in the Pacific Ocean. We can all do better than that, and yes, marine wildlife can not digest it either.

As a current owner of 6 Stellas and 4 Saltigas, buy once buy right. Any reel can do the damage but it depends on your fishing scenarios and your budget. There isn’t a right or wrong price for a reel or rod as the fish doesn’t discriminate. Your budget entitles you to not feeling as exhausted after fishing and opens up the different fishing scenarios you can enjoy.

I own a 2018 Stella and it is really one of a kind! It’s just like having a Lamborghini when all your friends have a normal car. I did not regret getting it but I got to say one scratch can make a man cry. 😂 And the Stella is really heavy duty i got a shimano reel’s drag burst when I hook into a big fish.while the Stella reeled in the fish with no problem.

i like your suggestions, id like to suggest beginners look into say a shimano fishquest spin 2000 - 2500 series. in australia it can go for ~$50 new. a great way to get into it with little commitment as you point out.

Senko Skipper, is that a St. Croix Graph Lite Saltwater Rod? The color scheme of the rod you are using in this video is exactly like my 1983(ish) St. Croix, 7', Light surf (yours looks a bit sturdier and longer). That said, it's my favorite rod in my humble collection. The butt section (black) of the rod is actually graphite and the top section (light orange-yellow) is fiberglass. Your rod is exactly the same. I paid $3 for mine and it was like new when I got it. I pair it with a 1983ish DAM reel. Tell your awesome father that it's the best "small money" that I ever spent.

For a couple of years now I've ben using a couple of Diawa DF 100 reels.They are very big and have an enormous line capacity. And they are only around 35 dollars. They are not smooth or easy to reel.But they get the job done.Pick one up if you can find it!!

LOVE THE VIDEOS!!!! Try a daiwa bg. I have an 8000 which is the biggest and I put 450yds of 80lb braid and 250yds of 100lb mono. It’s an amazing reel and I can catch 200lb bull sharks if they run correctly. It only costs $100 and they have smaller sizes as well

I was running an old 1953 skill cast knuckle buster for strippers and it was fun and dangerous at the same time. Lol. i love the old reels
