Beach Fishing - Brown Down - Ray Hunt

Follow me as I prepare for and fish Brown Down foreshore in Gosport on the hunt for Thornback and Undulate rays. The day starts off well with little wind, light showers and a calm sea following a storm the previous day. The initial view soon changes as weed and crabs plaque progress.
During the session I show the AlpKit Bru-Kit which I have had and used for 3 years now and really like. The complete system is clean, portable, robust, efficient and very capable. If you measure out the volume of water required rather than boiling water unneccesarily it is extremely quick.

The water carrier I use in the video is also very practical and easily packs inside of your set/tackle box as it forms to any space available rather than a solid bottle.

Loads of spider crabs at browndown, hermit crab is a good bait there as is peeler, cod do show in October on a big tide crab and lug bait.

The hermit crab makes sense as when anchored off Browndown I’ve had them on the anchor and boat baits before. Must be the type of ground.

Cod do appear all along the coast but are very thin on the ground.

I know what you mean about the reels. I use 2 slosh 30s on my Huss/Conger rods. I always put the one with the blue braid on my blue/gold wrapped rod and the yellow line and the black, red and gold wrapped rod. The weed on my local beaches has been awful too. Very tough to get a good fight from the Smooth hounds. Have to ask what you think of the Shakespeare long rod you have? My friends son has the 11ft agility tipster and 40 size reel. He can cast it a fair way thanks to the thin mono you can get these days. Best thing is seeing him catch hard fighting fish like wrasse and smooth hounds on it

Hi nemesisslr, I have 2 of the Agility 12'9" rods although they do an even longer version aswell. They give good bite indication and cast reasonably well although they are not as focused as the longer rods. I live in a sheltered shoreline where I can get away with this size of rod but I may have to buy another fairly soon to explore some other areas. Plenty more to come as I'll be doing braid/mono direct comparisons on the same type reels and tackle reviews will start in the workshop with my monthly ramblings, the first of which has been uploaded. Please let me know of any related subjects that interest you and I could possibly cover.

Are you using the 15 ft agility rod and the 15 ft black rod. If so which do you prefer ?

Harry, I’m using the 12’9” surf agility’s and the 15’6” K2 black extreme. I really like the K2 and they are far lighter than the 12’s plus they have 2 sets of tips which I like. One for distance casting weight and one lighter with fine bite detection.

No, only FW.

Sorry you need a licence for Fresh Water fishing (FW) and not salt water. I would check for local regulations though. www.gov.uk/fishing-licences
