We set ourselves up for a daytime session at Gilkicker despite our fears that it could mean a blank. Tucked away on the eastern side of the point to try and shelter away from the winds that approached 30 mph.
2 rods fished with up and over rigs and whole small squid baits.
The wind and tide combined meant that direct contact across the wind was very difficult so I fished uptide with grip leads and a large bow of line to help maintain bottom, this meant the wind was tensioning my line.
The rigs and set-up worked well but bite detection was difficult.
The Sweetcorn Kid: In this video you can watch Stu's version of how his day went and the specifics with his rigs and bait.

I'm going to ask a question and I'm expecting to be ridiculed, but why do you have your rod stand set up 90% to the water, and what do you feel is the advantage? Thanks
@seaangling
@seaangling 3 жыл бұрын
That is a very good question and it is set that way to best deal with the prevailing wind and tidal pull. It is almost worthy of a film in it’s own right as the angle of rod in elevation, the position of the rod relative to the water and the way the line is set for the rig used is all variable. Ideally you set the tripod so the wind comes from the back of the rod for minimum effect to rod tip, set your shelter so that the door faces the rod and you can comfortably sit without affecting your neck and the rod angle to the ground is suitable to the conditions. High for a surf beach, low for wind or estuary. That is a very brief explanation as everything is variable for preference or conditions. On this session I had the rods facing away from the wind and low, fishing upside with grip leads and a bow of line to help set the rig. I hope that helps and reminds me to do a video explaining this.

@@seaangling jesus!!! How fecking simple is that. Been fishing for 30+ years and never even occurred to me. What a tip, thanks for that. ps, Gilkicker is my favourite spot, Abbotsbury and Hurst have lost my attention. Now I only fish Meon shore through to Haslar, if I see you I'm going to shake your hand (Covid free). Thanks again. Top top tip. 🤔

@@kooper1683 worth the effort to fish the Western side of the Solent. New Forrest through to Bournemouth. Hordle and Barton fish very well at certain times.

@@seaangling agreed, I wasn't going to go into all the marks I've fished just a rough guesstimation, Bridport through to Selsey is maybe a better catch-zone. Also those baiting needles/aids are top notch. Made one yesterday out of a coat hanger. Hope you got a patent. 😁

I like to keep it relatively simple , the old faithful pulley rig and a 1 up 1 down , and for bait it’d be mackerel , sand eel , squid or Rag . I never like anything too fancy , plain and simple does me just fine .
