Hi Nathan, I was in Billys on Saturday (yesterday), and he said you'd been in on Friday. I managed to get a couple of bags of rag and lug and some frozen razor and blacks! We fished Sandy Bay last night and encountered the same weed problem! We walked the length of the whole beach and the weed was everywhere! We started at 6.45 and finished at low water at 9.00. We had intended to stay later but the weed actually snapped me off, so we called it a day. We only managed to catch a small whiting, so all in all, you did very well! Fortune favours the brave!😉😉🐬🐬🐬🐬Apparently a 17lb Conger was caught during the day in a local club match last weekend. Tight lines, Kev.

Squid cart combo works up here too, but just like you, when the easterlies blow and the fish are there, so is the weed. Hopefully a couple more big seas should get rid of it. I don't mind the kelp, I can still fish into that, it's the loose grassy stuff that clings to the whole length of the main line that does me in, it clogs up the tip eye so I can't reel any more.

It's been really warm recently! Love the squid but my goto cod bait is a bluey and cart cocktail. Not keen on the circle hooks for the top pennel tho. I prefer a standard j hook. Varivas Big mouth extras my favourite. I've lost too many big fish using circles or octopus for the pennel hook
@SlippyLimpets
@SlippyLimpets Жыл бұрын
I've never used bluey, might give it a go though, the scent trail is meant to be awesome. I normally use Sakuma Manta but thought I'd try the circles out mainly to avoid deep hooking the smaller fish
@dougaldawson5083
@dougaldawson5083 Жыл бұрын
@@SlippyLimpets I never go after the cod without blueys now. I cut them head to tail so I end up with 2 sides/fillets. Cut them in half again then I bind 2 pieces together skin to skin, if that makes sense. So the flesh faces outside on both sides. It gives out loads more scent that way. The heads have a surprising amount of blood in them so cutting from nose to tail opens the head in half. It's a bit a muck around but it's worth it.

One trick worth a try,, when your struggling for fresh try the following, frozen blacks cut the lot up into three segments each, three different parts of each worm as bait instead of one full . Sounds nuts but does work . Especially around the north east coast. Other experiment, two rods ,one with a full big black ,other rod one with three tiny blacks,, the latter will always out fish the former.
@SlippyLimpets
@SlippyLimpets 2 жыл бұрын
Funny you should mention that, I was fishing the other night with 3 other lads, one of them was using small cuts of frozen blacks while we were using big baits and he outfished us all.
@peterwalls308
@peterwalls308 Жыл бұрын
@@SlippyLimpets got a theory,,, there senses are probably hundreds of times better than are's . Think of it this way, to the left they sense one single worm, to the right three, each worm gives a minuscule diffrent odor, they go right, more chance of finding something.especially when its dark and a sea is running.Sounds a little nuts but.... try it, like with the headless squid which is pretty useless. Found that out in a small gully around cove, one rod with the head attached never stopped and not a touch on the one without. Strange but true.

@SlippyLimpets 2 жыл бұрын
Blanks and hard session are part of the experience of fishing and help us to keep learning. It's mark dependent, but a lot of anglers like to fish 2 hours down and 2 up, that way you can fish both ebb and flood. For your pennel, slide the hook to where you'd like it positioned and wrap your mainline around the shank 3 or four times, then place it through your bait. Hope this helps and you get that cod! Not in my experience mate,the only thing that can help is moving 👍
@SlippyLimpets
@SlippyLimpets 2 жыл бұрын
It's a good question- I've tried but the problem with casting at an angle to the shore is there's a larger amount mainline shown side on to the swell, meaning, as it waves wash over it deposits more weed on the line, making the problem worse. Best thing, I've found is to keep moving along the shore and hopefully find a clear patch. It's amazing what a difference 50m can make.
