Hi Matt bought 2 tidal 10oz arrived and both rods had damage to the rod rings one had the top eye bent with the insert hanging off, the second had a bent ring with the insert missing. Rods were packed as normal in solid rod tube. Due to illness rods were not used straignt away but a good few months later so had gone pass the returns time, had to have both rods fixed before using for the first time, sent an email to penn but never heard anythink back, good rods but very weary of rings failing.

@@Dp3.16 I bought my first penn rod in June tidal rough ground rod used it for the second time today it snapped at the lowest joint, I was only using 5oz of lead and a small squid bait and basic overhead cast, I will not be buying anymore penn rods the joints don't push together properly I've been told it's for wearing purposes but it's obviously a weakness to because that's where mine snapped 😢

For me, the top for the 2nd eye was broken off straight from the Prevail beach the first time I fished. Afterwards the tidal also broke the first eye ring for me. I returned to the Penn Prevail II Surf and I am very happy with that. Too bad it happened.

Great video & review Matt. Looks like a good bit of kit. I never go over 4oz leads with my Conti rods, but if I had the need to, this rod would be top of the list. Shame about the cracked ring. Smacks of poor packaging/handling if it occured during delivery. I might have mentioned this before, but there has been lots going on here this year, and I just haven't found the time for KZbin that I used to. Still grateful for your emails though, and glad to know you are doing OK. Stay safe & well, Dave. 🎣🎣👍👍

I bought the 13ft model today and have to say I am very very happy with it, paired with the 8000 size Penn Surfblaster 3 loaded with 15lb main line and a shock leader and it is superb. With the sliding reel seat, I can really use the power in the butt to pull off some long casts and much longer than I have been able to with my old rod. I'm a new angler to sea fishing, but have fished for game fish on the rivers of the north east for 55 years and at £120, this rod can certainly cast further than the old rod/reel combination I was loaned by a friend to try sea fishing. Once I get into the swing of things and learn about sea fishing, I might get another outfit and run a pair of rods on the beaches and hard standing areas. 10/10 from me.

A good review. I've been using a couple of Penn rods, a Rampage II Bass 11'6 2-4oz and a Squadron II Euro Surf 14' 4-6oz. I've been looking a rod that will cast a heavier lead, but like a few others have commented I much prefer 3 piece for transport. Some great deals about, and I've just pushed the button on the Penn Tidal XR 14' 3-piece for under £120 (inc. delivery).
@SaltwaterAngler
@SaltwaterAngler Жыл бұрын
Good work ! It used to be the case that a three piece effected the rods action and they were thought of as kids rods. As you know a lot has changed in rod building technology with no difference to the action of the blank. However with budget two piece rods you do get a bit more for your money than the three piece of a similar price. Interesting you mention that Bass rod - I haven’t owned one for years. But now I’ll look them up and dream ! Good input thanks
@George_Salt
@George_Salt Жыл бұрын
@@SaltwaterAngler I'm not one for matched pairs of rods. I think of them like golf clubs and prefer to have one rod for the conditions and one that's "close enough" to fish alongside it. The bass rod is a decent compromise for travelling in the motorhome. It will cast a float, or a heavy lure, or a string of mackerel feathers, or cast a shore rig from the beach, rocks or pier. It just struggles to hold ground in a rougher sea or cast in windier conditions with the lighter lead. The one thing you get more of with a 2-piece is length. The difference between two 7' sections and three 4'8" sections is substantial when space is limited.

Mine turned up yesterday , had hairline cracks in the lacquer on the 1st 2 rings where the legs are whipped , clearly a manufacturing defect . But the shop are sorting a replacement and collection , they've been brilliant. Never had any probs with Penn rods and ive had a few , Rampage 2 and Tidal Xr ,this one like you said is well priced and definitely capable. I look forward to trying mine out when the replacement arrives . Great vid

Hi Matt, Great review. I currently fish with two Penn Tidal XR390 3 pce rods matched with Daiwa 35 QD FS reels. Cant fault the 390's for price point and fishability. Great for casting and bite detection and I believe the new 2 pce has a slightly stiffer tip so I am certainly considering an "upgrade". Thanks for your impartial review.!!

Many thanks for your review, as I came back to fishing on retiring, I looked at many rods and reviews. Thinking to pay as much as I could afford to get the best I could. I bought an Akios air power 435. I joined my local club and I struggled to get anywhere with it. One of the team offered to help me with my casting technique which I gladly accepted. The end result was that although an excellent rod, it was too powerful for me. I have ordered this Penn model and if necessary I can get the rings changed. I wish I had come across your channel before. Unbiased reviews are essential for people entering the game, beginning and coming back to, so thank you. I will be watching your channel with interest. Crikey lots to think about here. This rod has been O.K its not spectacular but really is a "does the job" kind of rod.Again it depends where you are fishing - There are plenty of competitors- For your budget i would consider Yuki continental rods or for more traditional rod look at the Anyfish anywhere range depending again on your marks and conditions you fish. This rod is more on the budget range and for 350 you will get something better. Im basing this on what i've used or borrowed and fellow anglers i trust have told me. Where abouts are you ?

where are you in your Sea Angling Journey ? If you could only have one rod then Yes. You could spend more and improve in small areas but unless your going to get in to some Ultra Pendulum casting or habitually fish rivers or Summer only then get one if your budget allows

I saw that cracked butt ring when you was showing close up near the start 1m45s.. Always a problem with cheaper rods, ring quality 👍

@@SaltwaterAnglerI used to work in a tackle shop and every rod we sold had to be checked over before selling. Sometimes you can't even see it but you can feel it 👍

u think just maybe one day someone will put decent sized rings on a rod ,is it too much to ask??small rings are a nightmare unless your pond fishing with no weed (hate pond fishing :) )

Dommage que pour une video de présentation d une canne nouveau modéle .on montre une canne avec la ceramique d un anneau casser .... Too bad that for a video presenting a new model cane, we show a cane with the ceramic of a broken ring....

sorry mat , but you are better than this. You do not need to do useless tackle reviews in my opinion, but good effort. Not what you want to hear , but hey ho. tis what it is .

No need to apologise- not sure why it’s useless though. Very often Friends here on the channel request reviews and it will be of value to many. There is a wider audience for fishing style blogs. I enjoyed trialing a new rod. Thanks for the comment

I disagree with that. It gives a non biased 'review' from an angler not trying to sell it.

I think your tackle reviews are very helpful to be honest. I solely bought a reel because of one, so I’d ignore Eric’s comment

Who does not find a tackle review interesting?? Great see a non sponsored angler reviewing tackle honestly. It is an expensive sport these days. Great stuff 👍
