Shore angling in the UK is mostly waiting around, deciding nothing doing for several hours, then catching a strap or doggie and suddenly in your mind the sea is teaming with life including that next monster bass. Get the next bait in the water and all motivated again. Go home several hours later after no further bites. FML.

Wessex rig close in . Big squid or mackerel bait on the 6/0 3/0 running ledger , 3/0 top snood with big worm bait . Can be deadly for that big bass .

Your casting method is fine Matt. Ideally, your rod should be left pointing 45° or slightly above and your left hand should finish up tucked in just above your left hip. Try and keep both feet on the ground for stability. Practise makes perfect (or close to it!)

Nice going Matt. Interested to see that sole in daylight. Very little chance around here of getting them off the beach outside of darkness. I too fished the recent big tides (for bass and sole). Very disappointing though. I find locally the biggest are not always the best though.

This may help , fishing close in with large baits in the surf ! I use largest weight and short hook length,so it acts like a bolt rig when carp fishing ! My father goes one step more and uses trebles like he is pike fishing!! Like he says !! There's not enough fish out there and bait costs a fortune these days ! Then he goes on about how great it was 50 years ago ! Good luck next time and hopefully those 2 pulls become catches ! Also use sharpest hooks known to man and check them every re cast ! I've had the points burred over when fishing in the surf

Another great vid, as always. I recorded my casting, because I couldn’t consistently get any decent distance. I soon saw that I was pulling my arms in, instead of keeping them straight. I managed to sort this out to improve distance (a bit lol), so well worth the time it took.

Thank you for that advice on the low points by the breakers, never thought of aiming there. Higher risk of losing rigs i suppose. How heavy weight would you use here close to the breaker to hold it...
@SaltwaterAngler
@SaltwaterAngler 11 ай бұрын
Yea Grip leads and type of rig also important.All depends on the swell. With Braid it cuts through the wave action and can hold bottom with just 3oz

Haven't been sea fishing for about 4 years now, do the newer rod tips show up better now. without the need for small glow sticks to show bite detection . Tight lines

Yes thinner tips , but a good quality rod will also show bites even with a stiffer tip.

Great video Matt. Could you give me some advice. I am no a big caster (50/60 yards) and have injured by right shoulder which takes all the strain when I cast. I also reel in using my right hand holding the rod with my left. How do I train myself to cast left handed or am I limited to short flicks without putting too much pressure on the injured shoulder? Regards, Dave, broadstairs.
@SaltwaterAngler
@SaltwaterAngler Жыл бұрын
Interesting question. A longer softer rod (continentals) have really helped me where your not putting too much power in to the cast. A venue that fishes well in close maybe ? I’m sure though we could all cast left handed it’s that old practice thing ? I might have a go next time I’m out

Hi Matt good vid as usual, what beach light do you use, and I now keep one reel with strait 30lb line which is strong enough for a good overhead thump and avoids the annoying weed clump on having a Leeder knot.
@SaltwaterAngler
@SaltwaterAngler Жыл бұрын
Straight 30 a good option now we are heading to weed time! Yea i have found a no-brand amazon head torch usb chargeable for about 12 quid is brilliant. My main Lights though are for filming not really suitable for fishing .

Good videos and informative. Was just wondering about you taking and holding the rod from the tripod. Obviously you suspect a ' bite' but what line/ rod sensations are you feeling for?, knocks, pulls, slacking ?
@SaltwaterAngler
@SaltwaterAngler Жыл бұрын
Depends on type of bait (peeler crab especially good for this- but bass definitely pluck a couple of times first . Don’t strike to set the hook. With Bass after a couple of plucks something more substantial means it’s hooked. Very often the rod bends over as it either lifts the lead out the silt or is swimming off with the bait. Then you lean in to the hook. Most flatfish will set themselves and there is no need to hold the rod in my experience. Very rarely loose a bass once hooked. Often loose strap conger as the drop the bait in the surf!

Continental rods vs standard 2 piece beach rods. What are your thoughts on them and what do you prefer?
@SaltwaterAngler
@SaltwaterAngler Жыл бұрын
I grew up on Standard Beach casters and Multipliers from Zziplex and Daiwa. Those days more times were spent on deep Rock marks of North Wales . As i've got Older i prefer continentals for a more relaxed cast over clean ground. I like that i can use lighter leads and still cast a good distance. So horses for courses really depending on Venues
