The Fish Locker

Күн бұрын

Today I join Scott and his crew Billy and Kier on the Commercial Fishing Vessel St George out of Eastbourne. I am spending a day in the life of a Cuttlefisherman. We work their commercial cuttlefish cages and land their catch to the local seafood merchant - / 100072586923906 . We discuss the methods, biology and life cycles of cuttlefish and also the restrictions and legislation around it.
Don't forget to check out our sister channel ‪@thefishlockerworkshop‬ for helpful reviews and videos.

Utter respect to all the crew of the 'Saint George' and to you especially John - you fitted in perfectly to what was clearly a 'well-oiled' production team. Absolutely fascinating and thoroughly enjoyable. Whilst being a huge 'usual' Fishlocker follower, this proposed new 'direction' gets my 100% support. Looking forward to the next one!

@@TheFishLocker How do you claim this is a sustainable fishery? The ICES assessment indicated that the stock was likely to have been overfished and subject to overfishing. Concerns about biomass are supported by decreasing trends in English Channel cuttlefish landings and population indices, where recorded. French surveys, conducted by IFREMER, suggest a decreasing trend in abundance in the eastern part of the English Channel between 2006-2014. Marine Management Organisation reported landings in 2021 were also considerably below the five year average (2,616 tonnes versus 4,531 tonnes), which may be due to low stock levels. Additionally, although limited recent studies are available, studies indicate that the English Channel cuttlefish population is either fully or over exploited.

Interesting fishing, 1st time seeing Cuttlefish fishing. I fished all my life in NL. Canada , Deep sea trawlers for Cod Fish, Red Fish, Halibut, mackerel, Capelin, Turbot. Some Atlantic Salmon in shore, cheers

Really enjoyed that John thanks m8, I didn't even know their was a commercial cuttlefish industry so that's something I now know also the fact theirs no minimum landing size or quota is interesting but as the skipper said its only about an 8 week window and you can see all those cuttlefish eggs on the pots so they're obviously breeding healthy, I didn't know they got so big I've only ever seen them at about 3 to 4lb maximum and I thought that was huge but I was wrong about that lol. Another informative and enjoyable episode 👏 👍 👌

Not gonna lie, having watched documentaries about cuttlefish and how fascinating and intelligent they are this seemed a bit brutal, but I appreciate there’s obviously bundles of them and as long as it’s fished sustainably then that’s the best it can be.

what a really interesting insight into cuttle fish fishing, never seen it before and was nice to see the whole thing from start to finish... the only part i've seen is the backbone which we use to look for after a good storm so we collected them for my dads budgies etc

What a fascinating insight into the the day in the life of commercial fishing boat and something I never thought about being caught as a species off our coast as it not seen in the fishmongers, supermarkets or many restaurants in the UK so don't think of it as a commercially viable catch. Look forward to next episode of a day in the life series
