A simple video and yet great in its simplicity. I watched it 3 times. These are very practical pointers. Thanks for putting them all in a single video.

This is something I'm going to pay a lot more attention to. I probably have been more focused on the ball instead of the attacker. The only tell I've been able to catch is when someone does a bump kill, then often rush, then hit the brakes, and generally go right where they are pointing.

I like to defend the cut shot. Like you said in the video, the set gives a lot of the information you need as to what the hitters selections may be. When the hitter us pushed too far to the outside, there aren't many choices he's got. Loved the video! Thanks for teaching!

Very cool video. Love how the content has a bit for all levels of players. Personally, I find the „favorite“ shots of players the easiest to defend.

What do you think is the easiest shot to defend? Also, what tells do you look for on defense from the hitter? Let us know in the comments!

I think cuts can be the easiest. Hitters tend to telegraph them a bit (at my low level). Unlike hard driven balls it is just a matter of getting to them compared to control and reflexes. I am not sure the exact things I see, but their swing just feels off. Like it is not all lining up and not loading up (bringing the shoulder back from the hips) for a hard shot.

Obviously the higher a ball goes in the air the easier it is to defend because of all the time to react. Also I'd love a video on terminology and concise on court communication! Didn't really know the term hardline even though I can guess what it means...

great video! easiest shot to defend is one my blocker stuffs at the net!! haha i just look for shoulders of the hitter to see where they are trying to hit, still working on it!

knowing your oppenent and ther tendecies helps as well. also watch in which direction the upper body is facing and how hard they put ther penultimate step into the ground. often times, players don't aggresivly step into their jump if they just wanna shot the ball.

Easiest to me is when set goes way outside beyond antenna, so the hitter has to bring the ball in sharp angle, hit will go usually front half of the court. Hardest to read to me is a set goes tight at net, and no blocker there, the hitter can either ding the ball short over the net or jumbo over my head, if I move forward a touch early. it’s hard to wait long enough and cover both.

Sounds like you might be finding yourself in "no mans land". Try staying at the net as a net protector and then pull. Might make the attacker confused a bit more often. Once you get the hang of that you can start throwing fakes in there to mess with the attacker.

I think hard driven cross is easiest to defend and pass, but this is also why I can get burned with cut shots, especially for doubles. When defending I try to read the hitter's shoulder and approach speed. If they are coming in fast I know I need to be ready for a deep hard hit. If that arm is bent, like this video talks about, I know be ready for the cut or roll shot middle. My hardest adapting moments is definitely doubles defense and finding the best place to play d for a hard shot or the tip cut shot that gets me when I'm prepared to dig.

the easiest shot to defend is the one that comes straight into my platform :) thanks guys, gotta watch those elbows. A question: if my blocker peels, where should i move to, do i stand mid court, move a little angle, if he is peeling straight back?
@betteratbeachvolleyball
@betteratbeachvolleyball 3 жыл бұрын
Haha, true😂 glad you liked the video! If your blocker is blocking and pulling line, you are defending the angle whether he blocks or pulls. Depending on who you are playing against, you might stand a little more in the angle or a little more towards the middle, but you have to position yourself to be able to dig the hard-driven angle hit as well as the cut shot. There is a LOT more information about defensive positioning and different systems of defense you can run in our Ultimate Defender Course: www.betteratbeach.com/ultimatedefender! We also show you the right positioning and movement for every type of defense. THEN, we’ll show you when to use different defensive play calls to beat certain types of players. Check it out!

I like to defend the hard driven cross. Mostly because it usually comes right at me, and I don't struggle with digging hard balls.

Nice! It's always super fun when someone BLASTS a ball right at you and you dig it perfectly - pretty demoralizing for the hitter who thinks they just hit the ball as hard as they could and it didn't even phase you😂 That's why sometimes placement > power !

2 ball shot from midcourt clear vision easy read easy pass, knowing the other players' tendencies, if unfamiliar the set the approach positioning according to the block or pullback.

Easiest to defend: middle of the court As a defender I try to: stay in the middle of the court until the attacker is abou to jump, then I take the position the block isn't covering, in case the set was good. If the set was bad I way for the blocker to make a decision.

Hard driven cross does all the work for you if you're positioned right. I'll take that any idea over someone who can ping high line.

Easiest shit to defend for me is the cut shot. Often they aren't performed really secretively. And it seems that I am facing more toward the net that the line when sitting in my defensive position

Makes sense that you’d want to watch the hitter when defending. But when there is no blocker or they have peeled, you have to make sure the ball doesn’t get set over the net. When is the right time to go from watching the ball to the hitter?
@ivespoken8902
@ivespoken8902 3 жыл бұрын
i think you follow the ball until it is set, now you know it's not over the net, tight, off etc. then your next move is to watch the hitter, where is he, where is his elbow, is he jumping, falling over lol etc. I'm a terrible defender still learning this shiite though, i wanna dig every ball coz it's so much fun :)

Haha... great feedback, thanks! What you might be calling luck could actually be great intuition! A big part of reading on defense is trusting what you see, and sometimes you're seeing things happening so quickly that you get more of a feeling than a fully formed thought - trust your vision and your gut (but don't guess)!
