Beachcombing - Red Sea Urchin

i was fly fishing the jetties and i caught one somehow. opened it up and it was fat with uni, i am curious if they are safe to eat here.

Not sure what species it was, but I stepped on an urchin once when I was probably around 12. Was not a fun experience. Was walking around a sandbar with my dad. He went down, picked it up, and kept it.

We have a Red Sea urchin here in Northern California but it is the species; Mesocentrotus franciscanus.
