First cruise I ever took was on the Imagination. It was during an 8 year stretch of the happiest time of my life. Right in the middle of it. We partied like rock stars, stayed drunk almost the whole time, and I met this really cute girl on there who was a sweetheart. It is a sad moment to see a part of your memories retired. The big horn at the end was like a final death cry of a wounded and dying animal. One last yell of a mighty ship now going away.

I'm surprised really that they scrap them when the hull still looks fine and strong. This ship was only in service for 15 years. I suppose it's for the best as my family experienced the loss of 2 boys who would have become my cousins when I was born in 1970. They were sleeping in their cabin on the Lakonia whilst their parents were entertained at the tramps ball, as was the way at the time. They actually got locked in to 'keep them safe' and they would have been were it not for the fire and the ship sinking. The Lakonia was 34 years old and had several owners all slapping new paint on, especially when she was renamed TSMS Lakonia where she was painted in a brilliant white. They had painted over moving fixings for the lifeboats and their lowering mechanisms meaning some were unable to be freed. That ship had been launched in 1929 named the Johan van Oldenbarnevelt and as it had just been given a very sloppy overhaul, it would have remained in service for many more years had it not sunk.

These vessels are brought into service with such excitement and fan fare. They do decades serving with excess and luxury. They're meticulously maintained and updated. Then just unceremoniously discarded like last weeks leftovers from the fridge. I know that's just the way it works in the cruise and shipping industries. But it's still sad to think their history just gets totally scrapped and lost to time.

Older engines cost more to maintain, higher maintainance costs in general, plus the general wear. Ships are like people. They get old. And besides, steel is a precious material to be recycled.

Actually all of the cruise companies are hurting and are burning through their cash reserves. Scrapping obsolescent ships is a way of saving millions of dollars a month per ship. Also remember that the ships will need extensive refits to comply with the post-Covid safety standards. Also remember that the number of people cruising will be much lower. Even worse the requirements are for ships to operate at 50% capacity. Only the largest ships will be able to do this without hemorrhaging money.

@94YILDIRIMHAN4 жыл бұрын
This is not a good vessel. It has to go and replaced with better ones that also favors the well being of the service crew.
@styldsteel14 жыл бұрын
That's from our perspective. A from a business and engineer's standpoint? It's very different. Yes, while the average lifespan of a vessel is around 60 years, to upgrade the engines to the most modern, and to upgrade the rest of the ships systems would be extremely cost prohibitive. 1st, at full capacity, the passenger count is about 2500, it would be a very long time for CCL to recoup, second, you mentioned, you hate the people who made this decision. Well, there are a growing amount of countries who don't want these " dirty" diesel ships in their countries, so CCL had to make this choice, so with the new builds coming out, they are far more cost effective. Lastly, the cruising public prefers balconies. So...there ya have it. Love it or hate it.
