5:00 rider mounts front foot first even though in most other rides he mounts rear foot first. It's amazing how prevalent is that seemingly suicidal front foot first mount.
@TheLarryBrown2 жыл бұрын
Totally excellent video. 100% great. Useful info, well thought out presentation, no wasted time, many beefy points of thought to ponder. I can not believe that you are the same rambling guy that took 50 minutes to say one should mount rear foot first. The many example drops are useful and fun to watch. A "talking head" video but wall to wall skim video to go with it...great. One point that needs to be made, the rider in the video is riding left foot on the rear. Most riders will prefer the right foot on the rear. That also changes how you hold the board. So as useful as this video is, learn the "one step drop" from Austin Keen's video, which gives careful step by step instruction. Also I appreciate the focus on shore skimming rather than riding out to the waves. Shore skimming looks like so much fun to me! And that's why I want to skim, because I saw a guy shore skimming.

I have been learning how to skim for about 4 months now and I must say it is really fun! My only complaint is that people have come up to me telling me that I shouldn't pursue it or questioning why I am skimming at their beach and not a beach that Is better suited for it. What can I do to deal with these haters that don't skim? Mostly surfers that tend to approach me while I am only trying to progress. Do you ever have the same problem? I have found that trying to hand the board over for them to attempt to works best, But seriously it's out of control.
@BeachLookingGuy5 жыл бұрын
Most people don't even realize there are pro skimboarders who rip way harder than most surfers. I'd just ignore what anyone says. Can't say I really have that problem though, where do you live?

Thanks! As for windy conditions, kicking plenty of Sand on the bottom can help, but you also need a lot of confidence and the ability to drop the board fast and firm.

Drop the board low to the sand, make sure the nose is not elevated when you drop. A monkey crawl drop may work for you.

I have a small wooden board that I got like 4 years ago. I'm a lot older now and when I try and ride it I sink. Should I get a bigger board to solve the problem? Great vid btw ;)
@TheLarryBrown2 жыл бұрын
Wooden boards are for skimming in shallow water, 1" deep. If you are trying to skim in deeper water, trying to skim out to the waves, you need a foam core board and demon speed.

2nd day at it. I'm using a sloped beach with thick muddy sand. Only way I can move on the water is if I go over some thick water as it's receding. I'm using a 37" wooden board with wax and I'm 6'2". Biggest progress is I rode for a second but I lost my balance and the board went horizontal. Is this board ok for learning basics? Thanks for the tips!!

Yes. Many beginners try to skim like more experienced riders and go directly into the water. For learning it is better to use more wet sand rather than charge into the water

@Johnnyrad16835 жыл бұрын
If you hold the tail of board in right hand the board has to kinda slap down evenly on a thin amount of water. For me I put my feet shore side of the board mostly if it's a steep shoreline for favorable shore break, so it's like a snap the back of the board to the sand and step at the same time. Timing thing if you can pop the board down it really kind of sets the board suction on bottom of board locks it to shore thin water. So once you are getting on the board it has to disperse the surface area under the board evenly of the weight being put on the board
@TheLarryBrown2 жыл бұрын
If you throw your board on the wet or dry sand it should glide over the sand. If it won't glide you will have problems. If you applied surf wax to the bottom of the board, that's your problem. Remove all surf wax from the bottom of the board. Apply Zum speed wax to the bottom of the board to make it glide better. Surf wax and speed wax are two totally different things.
