There's actually nothing wrong with calling a pass play in that situation, just not that one. The pass they called was totally wrong, super risky, and very poorly executed. Running that play from shotgun clearly telegraphed a pass play. If I called the play, I'd call a play action to the right to Marshawn Lynch because NE is going to be looking for them to run, and you run it with Wilson under the center. You sell the shit out of the play action and have the tight end on the left delay one second (again, apparently blocking to sell the run), and then break off for the rear end zone pylon. If the play works, you're gold. If the play ain't there to be had, Wilson just throws the ball out of the end zone. That stops the clock, which is strategically why you call that particular play, plus it is way safer than the stupid slant play that was called. You would then have 2 more downs and a timeout to give the ball to Lynch from the one yard line.

Was it though? I've seen dozens of TDs on rub routes in the Endzone, maybe more. And that's the only time I've EVER seen that play intercepted. To me they made it about the play call not the play and it was the best play I've EVER seen. Also no one mentions the fact that the Patriots broke the huddle with four 2-Gapping behemoths in Vince Wilfork#75/6ft2/325 Lb, Alan Branch #97/6ft6/350LB, Sealver Siliga #96/6ft2/344LB, Christ Jones #94/6ft2/302LBs/, flanked by two very strong EDGE setters in Chandler Jones #95/6ft5/266LBs and Rob Ninkovich #50/6ft3/260, with two bruising throwback LB, Jamie Collins #91/6ft4/250Lbs and Dont'a Hightower #54/6ft3/265LBs, with three CB to match the Seahawks three receiver set (Revis, Browner, and Bulter). The seahawks lined up in a 3x1 nub set, with the TE to the far (boundary) side, with an inside receiver in the near slot, tight to the formation, and a 2 wr stack out wide of him almost to the numbers. The near slot motions over to a flanker position out wide to the boundary, and Darrelle Revis follows him. This is the key indicator - to Russell Wilson that the Patriots are in man-to-man coverage, so he should go ahead with the play as-called, since it is a man-beater by design, but it also clues Belichick to not call a timeout since Butler and Browner now know to expect one of the Seahawks staple man-beater, rub-route plays that they had actually repped against in practice leading up to the SB! Another key for Wilson is that the Patriots match their 6 Man-Line with essentially 8 players, Chandler Jones on the far EDGE, with Collins - who has the TE in m2m coverage - in the C-Gap between the TE & Tackle, and then Wilfork, Siliga, Branch, and Chris Jones across the line in the A & B gaps, and Ninkovich on the Near side EDGE. This leaves the 265 MLB Dont'a Hightower as the unlocked player behind the LOS, to fill any creases that may open up and meet Marshawn Lynch in the hole, in the even that Seattle chooses to run. However, had Seattle Called for a shotgun, sorry, pistol run play in the huddle, you would have likely heard "Kill! Kill! Kill!" aka "Omaha! Omaha!' (S.O. Peyton) as he checked out of the Run play and in to the contingency pass play, because you could not possibly have a less favorable "box count" to run against.

My friend said it was bc marshawn lynch don't like talking to the media and they know if he scored he was go be super bowl mvp so instead they tried to put the game in wilson hands so that he could throw the game winning td so he could be in the midia instead of lyn ch

Trust me. Pete Carroll isn't over on the sidelines thinking about who is going to be MVP and who is going to talk to the press or not talk to the press blah blah blah. They're trying to win a Super Bowl for crying out loud.

These moments do indeed kill dynasties. For example (this doesn’t come close) in college ball the Cal Bears had a sick team back in 2004-2008 then there was that one weird moment at Oregon State which led to a 10+ year decline of the program. So yah, shit like this kills.

It was a great play by the defensive guy. Lynch getting the ball was expected but he didn't bite and jumped the route. Sometimes you have to just credit the defense. But that doesn't get ratings

Anyway besides the SOLID, UN-ARGUABLE POINT I MAKE ABOUT WHY WILSON, BEING PLAY CALLER, OC GIVES WILSON THE PLAY, WILSON HAS THE FINAL SAY BEING THE ACTUAL QB CALLING IT IN THE HUDDLE, OBVIIUSLY HIM NOT CALLING A RUN HIMSELF SHOWED THAT HE WAS JUST A GOOD QB WHEN ABLE TO SCRAMBLE THAT DEVELOPED A DECENT DEEP BALL COMPLETION PERCENTAGE ......

What's unfortunate is that Jermaine Kearse made an unbelievable catch at the 5 to to set Seattle up for a score. Because of the horrible call, that catch is largely forgotten.

It's easy to say AFTER the fact. Remember the Pats stopped Lynch from a few yards out the play before via a Hightower tackle.
@goldenstatewarriors94182 жыл бұрын
That makes it worse. Lynch ran for 4.5 yards that play to get them there. Seattle was at THE FREAKING 1 YARD LINE! If Lynch runs that far again they win!

This one play Removed Pete Carroll from Hall of Fame contention.

That season, Lynch got the ball five times at the opponent’s 1-yard line. He scored just once. Over his career, he had 36 carries from the opponent’s 1-yard line. More often than not, he didn’t reach the end zone. On 12 of those carries, he did not gain a yard. On nine of them, he lost yardage. If you made contact with him before he was able to gather momentum, he was much easier to stop (his success on the previous play was a perfect example). The Pats were in a Goal Line Defense, with 8 players packing the line against a Seahawks Offensive Line that was near the bottom of the NFL on running plays. The Seahawks had used that pass play successfully that season, which is why the Pats had practiced defending against it.

I’ll rather lose with Marshawn getting the ball on the 1 yard line vs an interception
@JayDee-b5u6 күн бұрын
That wasn't even the reason. The coach was just trying to maximize the play attempts they had to get the ball in. It's not complicated at all. Incomplete pass clock stops no problem. Run it in. That was the obvious calculus. Now people are trying to pretend that it was some conspiracy where somehow coach didn't want Marshawn to be the 'face of the league'. It's beyond silly.
@abramwalker8824 күн бұрын
I feel like this is the perfect example of the they hated Jesus because he spoke the truth meme. Statistics back it up. I still even would say handed off the marshawn Lynch but if your data is true then handing it off to him probably wasn't even worth the effort. If only we could peek in that alternate timeline and see what he would have done but crazy if he'd ran it and fumbled it right?
@zenglider2145 Жыл бұрын
Wilson led the receiver as if he should catch it with outstretch arms in open field in the clear so as not to break full speed stride. Instead, the pass needed to be zipped tight into the receiver's chest so nobody could intercept it. But yeah, the call itself was inexplicable. Maybe a fake to Lynch and roll-out toss to a sideline receiver, but not over the middle.

Pete’s arrogance on display 😂. As a niner fan they deserved this fate after all the dirty stuff they got away with against us all those years prior especially 2012. And then what a lot of people forget. Seattle dline started literally fighting once it set in they lost. Showed their true character. Sorry I got no love for those Seahawks at all.

Why do so many people not understand that Wilson called an audible? Carroll did not call that play. Once again, Russ is to blame.

Im not a Seahawks fan and I'm definitely not a Patriots fan but that was the worst call in sports history.
@maintopofmtn55352 жыл бұрын
So run it on first down to the one. Second down now 30 seconds left 1 timeout . Throw it on second down you win or is incomplete stops the clock. Then run it 3rd down call timeout and run it on forth was the thought. But was a bad pass play to run at the 1 too much traffic. Personally I run it on second down timeout pass on third play then run it on 4th down if needed.

Lynch was the crux of the team but he was way to anti-social to be the heart of the team which, I think is why Carrol didn't like him. Lynch was the all star and yet the odd man out on the Seahawks and I think him being back in league but on Oakland pretty much confirms that.
@petes652111 ай бұрын
Definitely the worst. The Falcons also had the huge blunder by not running the ball against the Pats on all their downs after Julio Jones made that incredible catch down to the Patriot 22. If they just run the ball and force the Pats to use their time outs with less than 4 minutes left and kick the field goal they would have been up 31-20 and the Pats don't have enough time to get two scores.
