It's difficult to resist the appeal of a Beagle's dark brown or hazel eyes, with his soft, pleading expression. They're happy, outgoing and loving - characteristics more than balanced out by their hound nature, which is inquisitive, determined, and focused on food.
They aren't yappy dogs, but they do have three distinct vocalizations - a bark/growl, a baying howl, and a half-baying howl (a cross between a frantic bark and a bay). The half-howl vocalization usually is reserved for when they catch sight of quarry - or think it's time to wake the neighbors at 6 a.m.! Being pack dogs, they generally get along well with other animals and their human friends - and they think everyone is their new best friend.
The most important thing to know about the Beagle is that he is a scenthound. His nose is the most important part of his anatomy and his head is always down to the ground, searching for an interesting trail to follow. Beagles have approximately 220 million scent receptors compared to the paltry 5 million or so in people, which makes them very good at picking up scents. Humorist Dave Barry once described his in-laws' Beagle as "a nose with feet."
Because of their small size and gentle temperament, Beagles can do well in apartments if their people are willing to walk them on lead several times a day in all kinds of weather. They need plenty of exercise, about an hour a day if possible. If left alone and unexercised, Beagles can become destructive.

@@lizsantillan7474 yes I would recommend they are good outside dogs and if you want you could make it an inside dog, but be warned they do shed a lot. Plus they are attracted to smells so if your neighbors have dogs they will go to the fence. As well as howl when somebody knocks or rings the door bell. Get a beagle before it is six weeks aswell or you won’t be able to name it btw. Also if you have a kennel for it give it a towel or a blanket they usually enjoy those and if it starts to sleep with it over it’s head it’s perfectly normal.

@@sarang8647 it takes a lot of time for them to be trained if you did it kinda late, but they usually can be trained it won’t be instant it would take at least a year or less my beagle is house trained but we didn’t get him trained at a place so it should be pretty easy if not consider doing it at a different place.

So true. They have to be fenced or in a leash at all times. Once the get on a scent they get this tunnel vision it seems and nothing else matters but tracking that scent. I'm convinced they're brain and nose are directly connected. I've been with beagles for at least 20 years and I love these dogs.

We had a purebred runt when I was a kid, and she didn't have the white tip(she came from a breeder and parents were on the premises). There's also the 2tone Brown/Black strain of the breed, which does not have it either. So though it is a common feature, the white tip tail isn't ALWAYS there.

I have 2 beagles, one British ( Cooper ) and the other is an American ( Sarah ), Sarah is adopted from the lab, and she is doing great nowdays! The start is another story. But they both have the space to run and lay down where they want. It has been one of the best choices to take a beagle, a second beagle is a big deal just because of the time you have to put in. Definitly with one adopted from the lab, they give alot of love in return and thats best you can get from your compadres right haha!

I had a beagle that used to scratch up the door or below the windows when we would leave. It turned out that she would do this because she was too short to see out of the window. Once we moved into another house where the windows were in her range of view she was perfectly fine to leave alone

Lori Newman make sure you pick up any trash big or small cause they eat anything on the floor from tiny legos to your food to giant house hold items and they get hyper at some times ( for me at night) and they may try to bite when hyper but they are amazing dogs and listen very good and are very obedient and playful you will love em also mine is a puppy so depending on the age of yours these tips may not be useful to your dog

They aren’t too bad to train, just do what you would do with any dog and train them in an area without distractions. The only difference here is that they’re a hound dog, or scent dog so they have some extra distractions and you’ll want to give them a few minutes to just sniff around in your training area prior to starting so that they can get their stimulation and get comfy

I have owned 2 beagles the first was a female and very independent and kind of naughty but extremely lovable in her own way the second was a male and more sociable and timid and easier to train but also very lovable in his own way. They both were good dogs but the breeder makes a difference they can consciously breed the best traits into a litter by thoughtful pairing of males and females. Both dogs were really good with kids and cuddly and loved people and of course food was as always a bid deal. But I have learned you can use that to your advantage because they both responded extremely well it positives reinforcement and training.Having experienced the spectrum of personalities I still would never pick another breed. If you spend the time to train them you will learn that while their spots will change over the course of years their intelligence and fun loving loyalty will not.. You will until their dying day own an intelligent lovable playful and inquisitive pup.

My beagle is definitely territorial when it comes to food. He barks alot and slams the window when he sees other dogs. He barks non stop at other dogs and bikers when on walks. Overall hes very loving and a great companion. Mine howls on rare occasions.

You could try giving him some sort of toy to hold when going on walks, it gives a distraction and if he keeps it in his mouth it stops him from barking. It helped us a lot with our german shepherd.👍🏻

I got the nightmare!!!! He eats anything, drugs, tab ends, poop bags, glass, nails, Kevlar glove, woollen hat, will not give them up. Will either bite you or swallow it. He has many health issues, both back legs pinned, allergies, lymphomas, colours. He is now ten, heaven knows how!!!! Has had two behaviourists, four puppy training sessions and a mountain rescue dog trainer to try and sort him out but nothing has worked. Love him to bits, would I have another? Probs not, have had other dogs before never had issues

Mine is not territorial when it come to food since he doesnt even want to eat his food from his bowl. He love it when it is from his lab brother's bowl, but when it comes to his bowl (the same food) he wont eat it lol. We have to come up with some creative way to beg him to eat everyday. However, he begs for tons of snack all the time. Just doesnt wanna eat his food. So picky.

He could be having a Nocebo effect from his food bowl from the lab? He probably doesn't trust his designated food bowl. If his brother doesn't mind sharing a bowl, why not use a large bowl so they can eat together. (I just asked my brother he's a Veterinarian) I am going to be getting a beagle in the next month from one of clients who has a Beagle rescue. I can't wait.

Mine is definitely Stubborn. I feel bad because she is a rescue dog She came from a pack of 7 now its just her and I. She is about 3 and lived in cage her entire life. I dunno if she's too old to socialize she fears and trembles at everything except me. In a ways she's just like me, shes an emotional support dog I am a disabled vet im a loaner and seriously anti social thus the Dog. Some times I think she misses the pack & the cage. Its funny because I miss the Pack (Army) & Cage (Base) At times also.. but I dont want to keep a dog that doesnt want to kept. I take great care of her, but Im not quite sure she's ecstatic about being the only dog. But I cant take in another dog just yet.

Thanks for your service. Your dog will not be lonely since you are there. You will be his pack. Try to expose him to as much as possible so he won’t tremble. I have one which also trembles with some thigs but I managed it by assuring him I am there and not treat him as a baby. I hope both of you will make great memories!

I don’t know if it’s editing or just natural, but the voiceover had awful cadence. Hard to listen to. But aside from that, I lost my beagle, Lucy, 2 years ago, and I miss her terribly. The most adorable, beautiful and loving pupper ever. Everyone warned us about the baying before we got her, but honestly, she was calm and quiet and was never an issue. She did have terrible separation anxiety, and also was protective and utterly obsessed with food. As for sociable., we used to joke the when she went to the dog park she’d stomp on in to the middle of the other dogs and announce “Hi, I’m Lucy”. God I miss her.
