Speaking of coupons, I remember when I was living at home with my single mom and five kids including me, the only reason why she subscribed to the Sunday paper was for the coupons. I was the oldest and knowing how much my mom hated to cut them out, I actually thought it was fun because while I was cutting them, she let me watch my cartoons, even the ones that she didn't want me watching.

I just stopped caring. Kids did that to me. If I worried about what was going on at other peoples houses I would go insane. Best not to think about it and just hope no one gets sick. On a side note. There were some of my kids friends houses I would not let them go to. I also wouldn’t eat at certain houses unless it was something catered.

If not for dumpster divers, the baby boy that Alexis Avila gave birth to and threw in a dumpster, would not be alive. They heard something inside the dumpster they thought was a kitten or puppy but upon inspection they found a newborn baby boy in a trash bag with towels, discarded like garbage. Baby Saul was in a dumpster for 6 hours and was cold to the touch when found. And to think, had he not cried at exactly the time the dumpster divers were nearby, he'd have gone to a landfill with only one person, his homicidal birth-giver, aware of his existence.

The timer on the freezer is wasting money. Freezers don’t run all the time, if you leave it off for 12 hours it has to work far harder to get back down to temperature that if it were allowed to cycle on and off normally.

Hillbilly cheapskate is actually losing money. Instead of filling the bathtub with 40 gallons of water, they could easily rig up a shower, each person use a gallon or two to get all wet, soap up and then use three or 4 gallons to completely rinse off. Maybe 24 gallons total at most and no one has to soak in the previous people’s gross bathwater.

I can’t help but wonder how their frugality affects their relationships- especially the guy who just orders a side at restaurants and then eats everyone’s leftovers. I’m happy to spot a friend when they’re low on cash, and will even offer to pay so they will join, but doing that on an ongoing basis would be kind of uncomfortable. Who would want to date someone who won’t even go out to eat like a normal person?

I've done dumpster diving a few times throughout my life. Once, when I was a young teen, my mom sent me over into one so we could have 'new' carpet; what we ended up with was way better than the carpet we'd literally had since before I was born, lol, and it was only for like one or two rooms in our small house, so it was easy enough to get the amount of carpet we needed so that we didn't have to pay a dime!

@@JoriDiculous I've actually scored some free food at a local McDonald's many years ago that way. I was hungry on late evening and I knew the McDonald's was open until around mid-night. I managed to go in there right before they close and the manager just let me have a few burgers, a couple of apple pies and a few other things and just charged me for the price of a normal cheeseburger combo meal, since they were going to throw all that stuff out anyway as they were in the process of preparing to close up for the night.

I actually hate how penny pinching retail is because we're instructed to destroy anything before putting it into the dumpster to avoid dumpster divers. The reason companies are so against dumpster diving is because some how, they can still be sued if someone get sick eating stuff out of the dumpster or if they get hurt in the dumpster because this is America and people would rather sue instead of taking responsibility for their actions.

I have plastic 12oz bottles from Coca-Cola 8 packs that I have been reusing for almost 10 years. I buy 2 liter bottles and pour them into the smaller bottles and use them as necessary. The caps seal them tight and keep the soda carbonated. There are about 5.5 12oz sodas per 2 liter. The top of the 2 liter bottles, when cut, make a perfect funnel for my 32oz pitcher, which is a 32oz cranberry juice bottle. I regularly use this to make lemonade from water, sugar and 'lemon juice' that I pour into 20oz bottles from sports drinks. They make 3 20oz drinks when diluted to 'sports drink' level.
@rootbrian4815
@rootbrian4815 25 күн бұрын
Yeah, making funnels out of the smaller ones, you can heat and crimp the mouths of the bottle to narrow it. Though, not as durable as what you can get in a store, they do serve a purpose. I made a camera rain shield out of a gutted 2 liter soda bottle and poked holes for drawstrings (to tighten it) and put cut sponge at the top to prevent it from hitting the zoom lever and not to cover the microphone.

I can see the dumping of food - especially expired food. There’s too much risk for the business if someone gets sick as a result. Goods, though … Yeah. Businesses intentionally destroy things that are otherwise useable.
@FokkeWulfe
@FokkeWulfe Ай бұрын
So, there are a few reasons it's illegal: 1: it's a liability for the business. If someone gets hurt while dumpster diving, they can open litigation against the company who owns/rents the dumpster. After all "you did nothing to stop me from doing a dangerous thing." 2: as for goods and food. The food is kept in a nonsanitary place after being tossed. It carries with it the distinct possibility of sickness which is not only a liability for the company, but also a burden on the local Healthcare system, paid for by tax payers (if you didn't know, public hospitals *must* treat anyone, and can only go so far in getting payment out of said person if the person doesn't pay. Being federally funded, it's a legal obligation). The goods issue is a bit different. While it carries with it the liability issue, it also has another. If a product isn't destroyed completely, someone could salvage it and attempt to return it at a store location. Even if they don't get money back, they could get store credit. This costs the company money. "Look, it happening once won't bankrupt..." No, but over and over again, it does have an effect. Moreover, it prevents theft. An employee could surreptitiously toss a valued item into the garbage, then alert a friend waiting outside. That person grabs it from the garbage, and now a high ticket item has been lost, and depending on local laws, there may be no way of prosecuting. After all "it was an accident it was tossed boss," and "the guy at the garbage didn't know it wasn't supposed to be there." So, by locking the dumpster, fully destroying items, and making diving illegal, any issues that may come up can be stopped before they happen.
@GenXfrom75
@GenXfrom75 Ай бұрын
I used to work in a deli that donated leftover food for several years in a row to shelters, rather than tossing it all. Alas, they quit doing that after one person sued for food poisoning (the food was fine but they wanted to get money). Now, for their own liability protection, the food gets thrown away. No good deed goes unpunished, one bad apple spoiled the bunch, etc… 🤷‍♀️💔

I had a friend that would split 2-ply toilet paper by hand. This has got to be the most idiotic way to save money. After all, when you need to wipe, you're going to need more sheets, probably double at single-ply, defeating any cost savings. Just one less trip to Taco Bell each year would've saved him more money than dealing with this ridiculous idea!

My husband was not used to my cheap ways in the beginning. Here are two tips: Before you go to a flea market, go to the supermarket and take about five bundles of plastic bags from the recycle bin. A lot of sellers run out of bags and will make a trade happily . That’s five extra bucks. Second trick is getting very hot water into the pay laundry machine. Our building puts out lukewarm water and never gets hot enough. I take clear jugs and paint or tape the back half black . Put it by the window Clear part toward the sun. It heats up fast. Then just put it in with the wash.

Except you would spend that in gas on average unless the supermarket was in the same parking lot as the flea market or very close to it.

Regarding the MN woman, when I was in college in NE Ohio back in the early 90s, I spent one part of winter from October until mid-January without electricity. I lived in a very small apartment on the 3rd floor and luckily had gas appliances. I closed off the bedroom and bathroom, leaving the one large space that combined the kitchen area, dining area, and living room. I simply turned on the gas oven to some max temp (~350° or so) and used that for heat. It worked well enough. Plus, the small local public library was just a couple of blocks away, so I would spend many days there in the warmth of their spaces, where I could read whatever I wanted and had toilets available, too. At evenings, I used store-bought candles for about 10¢ a piece or less for lighting. It wasn't exactly fun, but I survived. Btw, gas utility was way less expensive than electricity back in that day.

15:37 Try fitting 2 of your friends(me included), in the trunk, their girlfriends under a blanket in the backseat, while the 2 boyfriends’ in the front seats paid $8 for each ticket. Thank God in was one of those SUVs that was way too big. I miss you SO MUCH tiny town drive-thru theatre. Teens and 2lyr olds, like myself drove you out of business. That and you’re $1 hamburgers and hot dogs. Maybe. Unless you dumpster dived them from the lady before. Good on you if so.

@@neuroisis85 In the winter, our oven can cost up to ten dollars per use; closer to $5 in summer. Our stove is old and in not very good shape (landlord not interested in getting a newer one), so we got an air fryer and use that instead of an oven.

When I was 20 my roommate and I would get our toilet paper from public bathrooms (go fill our pockets and bring it home). Our sugar was from the gas station down the road (go buy a coffee and fill pockets with sugar packets). The legs on my futon bent outward once due to enthusiastic adult activities, but instead of paying for a new frame I simply bent them back, and used rope to tie the problem legs to the ones on the other side to prevent the metal from just bending again. Also, there were a few times I used an extension cord as a leash for the dog and a ton of other cheapskate ideas I am forgetting, lol.

Extension cords (even coaxial cable) can be used to tie down mattresses or other furniture when transporting. Personally have seen this done in my west-central neighbourhood part of toronto. Also, coaxial can hold up to 30 kg, and I have hung soaked bed sheets and large towels after washing over it before to dry in the sun when the dryers were being replaced in the laundry room.

I made a camera rain shield out of a gutted 2 liter soda bottle and poked holes for drawstrings (to tighten it) and put cut sponge at the top to prevent it from hitting the zoom lever and not to cover the microphone. It actually works quite well, and my equipment has never been damaged by rain (though, if it's real windy, that can be a risky challenge).

My mum was cheap. Every time we received either a birthday or a Christmas present, or any present for any reason, we were not allowed to just rip the paper off of the presents. We had to take the paper off carefully, without ripping it, so that way the paper could be used for the next time a present needed to be given.

I lived in a mini van with my younger brother and cat for half a year. (The cat very early on got left with a friend tho) It wasn’t the worse thing in the world but the circumstances surrounding the event made it more difficult that it would have been. We ended up using truck-stops for showers and one night sleeps, relied on free food from church events and gas stations. (If neither opportunity presented itself we’d only eat at a restaurant once every 24-36 hours) The whole event came to an end tho when we ran into trouble with both a Missouri and Arkansas church retreated to Illinois/Missouri border and got a flat tire plus a ticket shortly after. Overall, it was definitely a fun experience. I will never forget and I’ll never forget my former Mini van Gearbreaker who got us thur that.
