Klaus becoming Santa because "magic is real now" made sense to me, because they made it pretty clear that the spirit of his dead wife was making the wind blow to guide him throughout the movie. It sets the tone that yes, magical or supernatural things do exist in this story.

On the topic of the liar reveal thing, I think the key point to consider is what Jasper leaving really means. The entire reason the family heads chose to expose Jasper's hidden motivations is because the mailman is pretty crucial to the gift-giving operation. I think it's reasonable for the other residents of Smeerensburg to also assume that him being gone would quickly revert the town into the hellhole it used to be. The new and improved version is not an easy status quo to maintain and they all have plenty of reasons to be disillusioned and cynical about their chances. Not only that, Jasper has always hidden his "get back home" motivation and when offered by his father to return home in front of them, DOESN'T say he wishes to stay. This means that as far as the other characters are concerned, Jasper is plenty willing to abandon the town despite being needed to maintain what good he helped create. From the others' point of view, Jasper is not just leaving the town - he's willingly destroying what they've created. This means that "hey, he made everything better, why are you mad" doesn't hold up. It's more like "he tricked you into having hope, but all along intended to selfishly destroy it for his own comfort".

You just put into words what I’ve been trying and failing to articulate for the last 5 years. Thank you!

Plus it took Aliva to literally show jasper what good he was doing to the town to understand. Because he definitely was gonna leave if he didn’t get to see the scale of what his work was doing.
@typemasters2871Ай бұрын
You make a good point but the lier reveal could have been done better at explaining this because the scene feels like the antithesis of the whole “a true act of goodwill always sparks another” mentioned earlier when Jasper was talking about the kids only being good so that they can get toys

It’s an instant classic and I knew it would be from the first time I saw it pop up on Netflix the year it came out. Immediately became a must watch for Christmas time. Not many Christmas movies even come close to this level of perfection. 11/10, no notes
@drakedsparrow2935Ай бұрын
I think the "Lie reveal" wasn't meant to say everyone is angry at him (excep Alva and Klaus more on that in a moment) I think the message was: ok you don't actually care, forn here on out you're back to your old life and everything else doesn't concern you because you already got your prize. What the authors were trying to convey was that in the eyes of his friends Jasper never thought of them as friends nothing was genuine, it's like when you get in a relationship with the boss's daughter only to get higher on the command chain of your company. As you explained Klaus feels betrayed because he felt used e that genuinity he thought was present in their relationship is now gone, and Alva realizes none of the good things that actually happened were what Jasper intended to happen it was just collateral. Even the "only good kids get toys" was actually collateral he would have never thought of it if it wasn't for getting back at that mean kid

8:48 I’m sorry I’ve just gotta point this out. The town didn’t hire her, the country/state/county/whatever did and since there is a requirement of a certain amount of teachers needed in a select area they sent her and only her to the town since it’s small enough to require a single teacher. Also teachers get paid based on the amount of students they teach, since she’s getting less due to parents pulling kids she can’t leave much less survive on a small portion of income. So she gets another job-a food based one so she can save more money by eating leftover produce-to gather money for a life she’s hoping to grow once she leaves. But she has calculated the cost of housing/rent, also food since she’ll no longer have the food based job she has now, and also to establish her residency change with the government which has a fee attached to it, plus the cost to move her belongings if she plans on taking them with her, and it’ll take time for her to find a new job since it’s unlikely at this point that she’ll still continue teaching. So yes, it has taken her 5 years of working 2 jobs (one she’s getting tired of and the other she’s lost her spark for) just to save enough money to build another life in a whole new place.
@moon7shinev15015 күн бұрын
Yeah I'm surprised he didn't understand that, especially in this economy. Like ok she immediately leaves as soon as she realizes theres no students but then what? She still has no savings

A trip out of Smeerensburg might not cost much, but trying to make a life outside might be more expensive. So you leave Smeerensburg, now what? Where are you gonna live for now? How will you keep yourself fed? You're not even guaranteed a bad job as soon as you leave

Dude it is a Christmas classic, we just live in a world where Christmas classics don't feel the same anymore. 1. Presumably she was either given the position by a government organization similar to the post office that has no direct contact with the city but authority over such positions. 2. Getting off the island doesn't just mean physically leaving thebisland, but also buying a house somewhere else and javing money for food and stuff while she established herself somewhere else. The thing is... complicated, the tribes people aren't pissed, they're resigned and showing solidarity with clause and the teacher. The teacher feels used, even if the end result was for the best she basically spent her life savings to send this rich boy back to his mansion, and what's worse is she's developed feelings for this guy whose whole goal had been to leave her. And like you said Clause has a very legitimate reason for feeling hury as well.

This is my all time favorite movie of all time. This movie makes me uncontrollably cry through the whole movie even at parts where it doesn’t make sense. But if you have watched this movie over and over like I have, you watch it with all the knowledge from watching it little parts where you see people at the beginning and realize their growth and it just makes you cry cause it’s so awesome. And I get it “magic is now a thing” but here’s the thing, that spirit of Christmas didn’t exist, the concept of gifting presents on Christmas wasn’t a thing till Jesper used it as his way out. Klaus passing on and him becoming the spirit of Christmas is what makes the movie special. The whole time the movie is just setting up with Jesper getting launched into the chimney, Klaus and him “flying” through the air with the reindeer, Klaus’s laugh, the Sami coming to help (elves). A magical spirit doesn’t JUST EXIST, the spirt has to be made and forged. His wife played an important role of being the one to make sure Klaus didn’t lose himself and to still try to be happy. Klaus became the spirit of Christmas when he finally accepted and processed his grief, it wasn’t till then he finally found a new purpose and became joyous. His spirt the ascended to become the spirit of Christmas because he forged his path and knew that in order to continue doing what he loved and cherished he would need to pass on to become what was needed. This movie is perfect and I will always stand by my opinion.

I gave it a lot of thought about "the reveal at the end", I shared the same outrage until my best friend said something that had my brain low key think about why the towns people wouldn't even hear Jesper out. She told me, very simply, the lie being everyone believed he was building his life at Smeerinsburgh and creating genuine connections with the people. Essentially, placing him on a pedestal as this great guy, and never ONCE opening up or being vulnerable about his own motivation for doing what he does. It hurts when you come to love someone, foster a deep level of trust, only to find out Christmas Eve they are leaving that very night. Granted, he didn't saw he was leaving, but he didn't say "Hey, this does look bad but I promise it isn't what it looks like. Can we finish our work tonight, then after the deliveries we can talk about it?" His father had the boat ready THAT NIGHT, the night of their biggest operation and, from all intents and purposes, he wasn't even going to tell them anything that was going on. We knew because the movie told us or Jesper told us, but no one talked with the other characters. It was the breach of trust and the dishonesty of Jesper not trusting anyone on the island. He and Alva even got together, he never opened up to her. Klaus became his best friend, he didn't share anything. Worse, he misrepresented everything. He used everyone to leavee town quicker, he lied that it was for altruistic reasons. Sure, it ended up having a positive effect, but it still started out with a deep and cutting lie and using other people. People have the tlright to be angry when they learn this stuff.

Much like how Jesper was forced to go to the island to set up a working postal office, Alva was probably sent there after graduation either because she saw there was a job opening or her superiors sent her there to fulfill some kind of government mandate showing they are at least trying to set up a school. The money Alva is saving is to live off of until she can find a new teaching job, which there may not be a lot of openings for right away, or maybe even open a new school as the savings she had was enough to completely remodel the school she was currently in.

Considering that a post office was established at a location that doesn't have mail, it is pretty good evidence that a school could be set up and send personnel there without the support needed for it to work. And if you watched the path Jesper had to take to get there, it's pretty obvious that Alva does need a lot of money for supplies to make it to a new town and establish herself there instead. Remember, Jesper was giving toys to any kids who could write a letter, he didn't care at all about "naughty or nice." His first kids were ones he caught in the act of sending a sleeping old man off to sea on an ice float. It is only because he was petty against a kid who attacked and taunted him that the idea of the naughty list was born, and it is fear on losing out on toys that caused the kids to change. This is an indirect consequence of his actions. While he is still the source of good change, being an indirect source means that it is fragile and must be maintained carefully. Which is extremely hard to do if you're only doing it so you can get out of there-OH WAIT! That is exactly what Jesper has been doing this whole time. We may see him struggle with the idea of leaving, but he never once drops the idea that it is the end goal he is working towards. So when that is revealed to everyone, they realize that they are the ones who are honestly working towards making their town a better place, while Jesper was a selfish spark to that. So they turn their back on him, needing to pull in their own resolve to save the town by themselves without Jesper. And so, Jesper leaves, because it was still his end goal. It's only when the boat captain encourages Jesper's father to talk to him that Jesper is able to voice his conflict. While we don't get to see that conservation, that is also part of the point: all we need to know is that Jesper and his father were able to come to an understanding, and Jesper chose the life of a postman over a privileged life. He chose to be selfless instead of selfish only at that moment. Every moment before was him either being selfish or conflicted about it.
