The pinecone surviving the explosion (but not Carlo) is the most realistic part! Trust me, I saw pine trees burn in terrible forest fires: the pinecones always survive. Always. They just hang on the carbonized branches, almost pristine. Some species are even fire resistant (to a degree) and just "jump off" the tree when it catches fire.
@marcel7734

Makes sense, pine trees tend to be the most dry and when a forest fire occurs the seeds gotta be able to survive
@0Anubi0
@0Anubi0 Жыл бұрын
@@marcel7734 It widely depends on the species, some are built to open up and "pop off" during fires, and transform into (fairly dangerous) far-traveling projectiles to save the seeds. And while pine resin (and pinewood, indeed) is fairly flammable, the pinecone itself is going to mostly survive unless you literally put it in a campfire or something.

The original story was a way for the author to confess exactly how much he hated kids, so he put Pinocchio through all sorts of torture - hanged - sold into slavery - sold into slavery (x2) - the two people that he valued in life died - had his limbs torn off - got scammed - got swallowed by a fish - died saving his father but then he got reincarnated by the fairy into a real boy for his one good action of saving his father, so... happy ending?

I do think it deserved its Oscar win because of how complex the creative process was, as well as how long and hard Del Toro pushed for it to happen. That being said, Puss In Boots 2 did offer some tight competition due to its stylistic visuals and entertainment value for its target audience.
@0Anubi0
@0Anubi0 Жыл бұрын
"How complex the creative process was" - yeah no, I don't think it offered that much of a challenge when all the source material was already there. Del Toro just crashed Pinocchio against Pan's Labyrinth and called it a day - there was no groundbreaking innovation story-wise and the movie feels a bit all over the place at times. It's a Del Toro movie, and quite honestly, far from one of his best. Puss in Boots 2, instead, was not just visually compelling or entertaining for "its target audience" (oh c'mon lol) as you said, but it offered an original (mind you: *actually original*, not just the same story with some extra surreal shenanigans and a gritty paint coat like this Pinocchio) and interesting retake on classic tales, a compelling story, solid characters, and villains you can take seriously, unlike many modern animation movies.

Something I really liked about GDT’s Pinocchio is that it changed the original’s lesson. Pinocchio’s lesson is usually “go to school, never lie, and be good” to become human, but GDT said “humans aren’t perfect, but they should appreciate life and everyone in it.” That and I cried pretty hard at the end, like they really want to hit the mortality part home huh 😭 Personally, I do think this deserves over PIB based on its animation alone. There are just so many crazy shots that really elevate stop motion to the next level- like the camera work on Carlo swinging and Gepetto hitting a balloon around. Stop motion is a very underappreciated medium of animation so I’m always thrilled when awards brings it mainstream attention 💖

I got to see some of this and meet Del Toro at Annecy Festival last year. He spoke how this film had been in production since 2015, and was almost scrapped a couple of times. It wasn’t until Netflix picked it up, he could finish it. A few things got scrapped in the process of all of this, but I definitely think it deserved the Oscar. I also think it being set in WWII Italy was a neat touch that added weight and tone to its content, making it more unique

I've seen Del Toro's Pinocchio, and I've also Read the original book by Carlo Collodi. The movie does try new things with the story, which it succeeds in trying, this is my opinion. So althought the plot is different, there are nods to the original book. Like with Gepetto's son being named Carlo, after the author of the book. Pinocchio's feet getting burned, which also happens in the book after he gets Gepetto arrested. Then there's the four black rabbits, who are also in the original book, though they don't carry Pinocchio away in the original story, but they do scare him into taking his medicine. And of course, there's the squashing, and maiming of Sebastian J. Cricket. Those scenes are a nod to the original story, where Pinocchio kills the talking cricket (He has no name, he's just called cricket), with a wooden mallet. I like both though, and I'm glad the took a creative turn with this story.

I feel like the only thing that justifies it winning best animation over Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is the fact that it was STOP MOTION. That stuff takes a lot more time to pull off well than computer animation (not to downplay the work it requires for computer animators or anything) so I feel its fair that it won.

Well, I haven’t read the book either. I do know that it was a deliberate choice to make comparisons to World War II. From what I understand, this is the directors thing as he uses war in a lot of his films. Another thing I would like to note, is the pleasure island comparison. In this film, rather than boys, turning into donkeys for labor, it’s boys turning into men for war. It’s a more depressing change the more you think on it.

I never questioned that so I investigated and I found out that pinecones resist fire so it actually makes sense. But I think is kinda ironic and sad how the pinecone survived and was still perfect, the crucifix statute only got one arm missed, the church only had a hole in the roof which can be solved whereas Carlo didn't made it, this crearly shows how life is unfair 😢

The fascists were not in the original book because it's from the late 19th century and they weren't around ...yet. I suggest you watch the 2019 Italian movie by Matteo Garrone (also with Roberto Benigni but this time as Gepeto). It's the most faithful adaptation (some may say too faithful). Well if you don't like the story you might not like it, but if you can't bother reading the book, it's as close as possible. Gepeto originally makes pinocchio out of an already magic piece of wood and the boy is uh ...bad. But like real bad, original Pinocchio is an entitled brat and that makes so much sense considering the intended moral of the story. The rabbits in this one were straight from the book, pinocchio gets sick and the fairy with blue hair want him to take medicine but he refuses so she calls rabbits pallbearers to scare him (and the ghost of the cricket pinocchio killed in the beginning). It's a pretty dark story but the movie has very pretty visuals and manages to get the almost psychedelic feeling of the original story across pretty well. It's very similar to Alice in Wonderland, the world is simply magical, and by that I mean literal magic surrounds everyone, the puppets can all talk (but they have strings) the fox and the cats are part of everyday life and the fairy with blue hair lives in a mansion in the forest with a giant snail woman. The sea monster is originally just that a sea monster, not a whale just ...a monster. It's honestly a very cool fairy tale.

This movie has one true flaw. It doesn't have Pauly Shore dubbing in "Skiddoo Skiddoo Skiddoo."

03:10 Yeah, the original Disney Pinocchio didn't do much for me either. Even back when it first released it wasn't liked by critics. It just feels like people only really like it now because of nostalgia and excessive in your-face reruns and Disney's forced merchandising. Also, since you've already shared your thoughts on almost every Pinocchio movie out there, I hope you'll consider reviewing the 1978 animated Pinocchio film made in italy. kzbin.info/www/bejne/pqXbeYCgZ9JroaM Its the only Pinocchio movie that's actually faithful to the original story and doesn't have the Disney stereotypes or nazis. But it does have giants and its set in the 1800's like the original story

guillermo del toro is just like this. i think a lot of what bothers people is the pacing a children's movie needs. if you like the vibe of creepy and political but want something more original and mature, check out his other work! pans labyrinth is my personal favorite
