Nimona is honestly too good for modern Disney. I had been following this movie's production since it was announced and was extremely happy Netflix revived it! It was well worth the wait with its strong story, excellent animation, and epic soundtrack! That line about the whole kingdom wanting to run a sword through Nimona's heart and her saying "sometimes I just wanna let them" and then later attempting to do just that to herself emotionally impacted me so much; no way Disney would've ever allowed something like that in one of their movies nowadays

I still don't understand the shape-shifting. I felt like Nimona's story didn't flesh her out enough, in my opinion. I kept wondering if there were more shape shifters and how they came to be. Why are they so powerful? Like Nimona was nearly invincible, so where is the danger? I didn't read the novel, so I just guessed there was more explanation there. Is Nimona the only one? Is there a true form? Why can't Bal ask about the shape-shifting? Most people would be shocked if they saw powers like that. I thought the movie was ok, but I feel like a series could have added more, maybe.

I feel that the reason why they won't kill Nimona is because Nimona is not supposed to represent one trans/nonbinary person. I think that they are more like... the idea. That is reason why they have lived 1000 of years and why "killing them" do not really kill them. There has always be queer people and there will always be queer people. I find this movie to be a great example of how to portray lgbt+ characters. The knights for example, Ballister and Ambrosius are gay and what drives them to each other is their love for one another, but it’s not showed as a sexual attraction as most films usually portray. It’s more of an actually relationship between two individuals that does not depend on their sexuality to work. They are men who were trained to be knights so they aren’t overly flirtatious yet somehow they still charm each other. Although sadly this hasn’y been given enough screen time, I admire what the filmmakers did. On another note, the art style and design of this film is staggeringly amazing. The world is amazing and they all blend with one another yet are distinct enough to be easily pointed out. One take away that I wanted to address in the end is the story, I just wish they could have explained more on the characters backgrounds and how they came to be. Their motivations just seem to be THERE and not something that CAME TO BE. If they showed more of the characters background I don’t think I’ll have any complaints. To be fair, they did show us enough to have the story make sense to the audience. Overall, I’ll give this movie a 8/10. I love this movie and I can’t wait for the makers to create something similarly creative.

So Ambrosius is...a really bad boyfriend. The dude didn't even bother investigating the Queen's assassination to prove Bal's innocence or, if he was guilty, to make sure he did not have co-conspirators. He spends his time acting jealous of Nimona, whom Bal is only hanging out because Ambro wouldn't help him. Then Ambro chooses to believe the Director over Bal. Even when Ambro says it's only Nimona's fault, the Director is STILL declaring Bal a villain so rather than arrest the Director Ambro just turned around and let her continue to spew that Bal is a villain? He SAW she had BALLISTER'S SWORD and he STILL was too stupid to think that was suspicious!!! Nevermind how it makes no sense for Nimona to have shapeshifted the Queen when she was busy being Ambro and Bal could verify this because HE FILMED IT. Ambro couldn't even stop the Director in the end so...what good did he even DO in the movie? Bal deserved so much better. Frat guy Todd could have been cut entirely. He was doing the Joss Whedon bathos in every scene, undercutting the drama with him spewing moronic crap like durrrrr wut's a whale. Derp a durr, doop a doo, we get it, he's stupid and mean and mean and stupid. It was really out of character for such an idiot to be the one to track down the hideout, because the dude is so stupid he would forget how to walk or something before he could sneak up on them. I liked Nimona and Bal's dynamic, although their third act breakup was rather trite and ended up harming their making up. But the mystery of the assassination was way too sloppy and Ambrosius being frankly awful and never getting called out on it was underwhelming.

To be fair, it is kind of hard to just instant break a concept that has been hard set into society for hundreds of years, I mean hell, we can look at modern day society for perfect parallels. Look at how minorities are treated to this day because of old stigmas from hundreds to thousands of years ago, look at the hold the church has on society to this day because of precedence set so long ago.
@billbillson6779
@billbillson6779 11 ай бұрын
The thing is that Ambrosius *already* showed he was capable: by breaking a concept already in place by befriending Ballister and accepting him as a Knight. The movie fails to establish why he and Bal should get back together, when he proves over and over again he does not have faith in Bal and over and over again fails to have his back. This is someone Bal needs to walk away from.

@@billbillson6779 I mean, the fact that he was even willing to continue to sit down and not just go for his head kind of showcases he is just incredibly confused about the whole situation which is fair when you take a step back and look at things purely from his eyes. I mean, really think about it, obviously since we as the viewer can see the story going on, we can understand what the true issue is from the jump, but Ambro for all intents and purpose watched his bf kill the queen and then shack up with a monster that said religion for actual millennium has said time and time again, kill and manipulate people. I get what you are saying, but I think it is a bit unfair to say he is a bad boyfriend for not believing his own eyes as well as once again, the religion that runs their society.
@billbillson6779
@billbillson6779 11 ай бұрын
I could have given him a break if it was one thing, but it's a whole series of things that Ambrosius does in the movie. Failure after failure after failure. I'm not saying he should have immediately believed Ballister, but it would have been better if he had expressed doubt or lifted a finger to investigate, or at least not base his confusion on petty jealousy. Not once does he express real trust in Ballister and trust is an essential part to a relationship. In the end, he's done nothing to redeem himself. It's really messed up that this guy expresses more "hey that's not like him! Something's fishy!" when it comes to whether Ballister likes jazz or not, than it is with killing the Queen! Let that sink in. Like, even when he thinks Bal is just being used, not once does he bother to ask Bal what's really going on and he doesn't even care when the Director STILL labels Bal a villain: she continues to broadcast to everyone that Bal is guilty. Hello? Hello, McFly? Anybody home? You seriously think the Director is acting on good faith when she is saying THAT about Bal? The movie even makes a show of Ambrosius recognizing Bal's sword in the Director's office, but his brain never connects the dots. What good does this guy do, honestly? If Ambrosius was removed from the movie, what would change? ....There wouldn't have been that stupid third act breakup with Nimona, I think. And that's it. The guy doesn't help at all. The complete and utter lack of trust he has with Ballister is a huge indicator that he needs to do more before he's boyfriend material.

Overall a great review. The movie definitely had some plot holes, such as their plan to just confront the director with the evidence. But one thing I totally disagree with is the idea that Nimona's story overtook Ballister's story. The movie is called "NImona". The movie is about her. So it makes perfect sense that she is the main storyline. The backdoor way they make it happen by having Ballister's story in it is honestly part of the genius of the movie. We're really here to care about Nimona; Ballister is the side character. As for his plotline...it does resolve itself. He and Ambrosious stay together in a happier, more trusting, more open kingdom. That, to me, is a satisfying ending for his story.

"Nimona," is one of the best original animated films on Netflix. The only things about it that don't make sense is Gloreth's betrayal of Nimona in Nimona's flashback and the ending doesn't fit the overall tone of the film. Gloreth took her parents' and villagers' side when she already knew about Nimona's shapeshifting abilities and befriended her anyway! The alternate ending for the film that was ultimately scrapped would've been better than the final cut, as it cements Nimona's and Ballister's relationship as friends or maybe as surrogate father and daughter.
@carlosaguirre9834
@carlosaguirre9834 11 ай бұрын
I actually like the way Gloreth "turns" on Nimona. The whole interaction represents how society's unfounded fear of difference gets passed on. Children like Gloreth don't fear Nimona until they are TAUGHT to fear her. Even though she has known no reason to fear Nimona, her family and society tell her Nimona is a threat. So she's going to learn that. And that's how it is with with people and difference in the real world, as in, LGBT+ people. Perhaps the movie could have had more instances of the parents telling her to stay away from Nimona, but really it's all the same. Kids don't inherently carry this fear and hatred. People teach it to them.

Imo Gloreth’s betrayal makes perfect sense. She’s a kid, and most kids look up to their parents for everything. Trust their parents judgement, even if they don’t understand. Do you know how many childhood friendships have been broken up because “my parents don’t want me to play with you anymore”? It doesn’t take a lot for a parent to convince their young child of something.

I really like how Nimona isn’t fully explained. The story she tells was meant to be close but also a lie. While we don’t see some kind of start when we see what actually happened with Gloria. She’s just this spirit or something that takes whatever form it feels like. It would be cool to have more movies like that. Like with Groundhogday too. It doesn’t matter how the weird thing works, it’s about the characters.

Lightyear with or without the lesbian kiss was alright. It was just a short scene and I think it didn't reflect in the product's quality, which I think was quite good because of its' graphic style and message about obssesion and acceptance of a self's situation. Stark contrast to Nimona, that instead was carried by the message of rejection to those different and even having a rather simple animation, I believe it was wonderful! Nice color palette, great character design and expresions and the cherry on top in my opinion was the look of the city. Enough sci-fi for it to be enough medieval as well! RIP to Blue Sky. I like the movie, but I have some notes regarding this movie: . The main conflict of this movie could’ve been prevented if the Squire had just replaced the sabotage sword with a regular one. . The world building is definitely flat ; they’ve been around for a 1000 years and they haven’t encountered any other kingdoms or countries, they’ve never seen a foreigner? . Why is Nimona still there, she can travel wherever she wants and change into any form that she wants. Just go somewhere else, don’t transform in front of other people, and she’s good. . So their entire 1000 year old civilization is based around one little girl pointing a sword at Nimona; talk about exaggerated history. . At first the statue stabbing scene was emotionally powerful, but after realizing that Nimona is practically immortal, it kind of diminishes that moment a bit.

Look, hear me out. Movies fine, Look at it from the OG villagers perspective. Glorith and all them We’re all chilling one day, doing villager stuff, and then suddenly a gyatdamn *bear* comes bursting out of the bushes, *with a little one in its paws* Now the child seems okay, even giggling for whatever reason, so that’s probably the only thing keeping her alive, in our minds. We miraculously rescue our child from said bear And then The bear Turns Into A *CHILD* Cool, so we’re dealing with a skinwalker. Fantastic. “Oh but look at how they beat her up!” Again, from the villagers perspective, that’s gutwrenching. This thing clearly has the ability to transform into any animal, it could turn into something that could escape or f*ck us up, yet it remains a child. A sweet looking little girl, of all things. I’d take that as a skinwalkers attempt to manipulate my humanity and empathy in a bid for self preservation, or to get me to drop my guard I’m just saying, they’re not out of pocket for their reaction

Nimona being a shapeshifter is a metaphor for being trans, non-binary, or genderqueer in some sense. This is echoed throughout the story by comments like, "Why can't you just be a girl?" "Aaand now you're a boy"/"I am today." "They only see you one way, no matter how hard you try," the whole conversation between Nimona and Ballister about her *needing* to shapeshift, and Nimona almost k!lling herself. Some people still view gay or trans kids as inherently wrong or even dangerous or "unnatural." That's why conversion "therapy" is put in place, to "cure" them (it doesn't). Homelessness is high among queer and trans youth due to disownment from unaccepting parents, and su!cide rates are high among especially trans kids because of the fear and pressure society and oftentimes even their own families can put on them. This movie was commenting on people demonizing even kids who they perceive as "dangerous" for existing as themselves within an identity that those people don't understand. I don't think it was a perfect metaphor by any means, but that's why Nimona is a shapeshifter, a "monster" if you will. The writers were playing on the stereotype of being perceived as monstrous and why it's important to question where that type of fear-based thinking comes from, because it can often lead to prejudice. (Also, the og creator's name is Nate Stevenson, and he's actually a trans man. He also was one of the writers/creators of "She-Ra and The Princesses of Power" I think it's called, which I haven't actually seen yet but have heard is very good.)

Before i saw it for the first time my favourite movie was "a portrait of a lady in fire" cause as a lesbian i love lesbian romances and as a very romantic person I just loved this movie... After I saw nimona... I cried like never before during it. It resonated with me like no move ever before. As a trans person I just felt it to my core. It instantaneously jumped to the very top of my favourite movies and it remains there. I watche it like 6 times already, cried every time. In comparison i watched a portrait of a lady on fire 4 times so far i think and the ending was less and less moving for me. Meanwhile nimona hits me every time just like the first time and I love rewatching this movie. Just felt like sharing how much I love it. I will just drop this quote that is the one that... let's say that is THE quote from this movie, the most important one for me: "Kids. Little kids. They grow up believing that they can be a hero if they drive a sword into the heart of anything different. And I'm the monster? I don't know what's scarier. The fact that everyone in this kingdom wants to run a sword through my heart... or that sometimes, I just wanna let 'em." I was actually tearing up while writing this comment

The queer rep and themes about gender in this film are awesome. But I always read the Institute as a commentary on the police. I haven't seen anyone else really draw this connection - but it seems clear in some lines of the film. Bal reaching for the phone, and the director yelling "He's got a weapon!", and then being shot at. Bal saying "The Institute isn't the problem, the director is. We need to talk to Ambrosius" - very much "It's not all cops, its just one bad apple" vibes. Or the concept that gets repeated that Ambrosius cut off Bal's arm because he was *trained* to. He regrets it ("Arm cutting is not a love language!" lol), but he was just following orders, following his training. There's no such thing as a 'good' cop, because the system is designed to produce bad ones.

Netflix really took Nimona instead of Disney and it became a really good film, not only business wise, not only opinion wise from the fanbase, and that of course, it’s a good movie. (Spoilers next) Also, when Nimona recreates the prophecy, or becomes a ‘monster’, it’s terrifying. I don’t find it scary look-wise, of course the design is still good. But when Nimona screams, it’s a mix of a roar and a humane scream. It shows that Nimona is still her, and that she’s not completely gone, and that its her screaming, its her in pain. (also if anybody’s gonna say “yapper” or if they have a problem with me talking too much, go look at mo williams books)

At the end, Nimona says 'Be right back' and transforms into a Phoenix before flying into the beam/weapon- They had no doubts about returning alive, if after a little while to reform.
