Beans, Sweetcorn and a Very Close Call | Allotment Garden | Allotment Gardening With Tony
Now is a good time to sow dwarf beans and sweetcorn in the UK because the weather is starting to warm up, and the risk of frost is reducing in most parts of the country. Sowing at this time will allow the plants to establish themselves before the summer heat arrives, ensuring they grow strong and healthy.
Dwarf beans are a fast-growing crop that can be sown directly outdoors once the soil temperature has reached around 12°C (54°F). This typically occurs in late spring or early summer in the UK, making now an ideal time to sow. Dwarf beans prefer warm soil temperatures of around 18-24°C (65-75°F), which they are likely to experience during the summer months.
Sweetcorn is a warm-season crop that requires a long growing season of around 100-120 days, so it's important to sow them as early as possible. In the UK, sweetcorn should be sown outdoors once the soil temperature has reached at least 10°C (50°F). This usually happens in late spring or early summer, making now a good time to sow. Sweetcorn also needs plenty of sunlight and warm temperatures to grow, which it is more likely to experience during the summer months in the UK.
