Playing Mario Kart 7 online in 2023

Mario Kart Wii was officially replaced by Mario Kart 7 in 2011. This being said, with the 3DS game not living up to many people's expectations, the game has proceeded to become less and less popular over the years. With Nintendo recently announcing the game's online servers (as well as all other 3DS and Wii U online services) will be shutting down in April of 2024, it seemed appropriate to take a look back at Mario Kart 7's online features and functionalities. Were us Wii players too hard on the game?

While I'm sure Pretendo Network will fill in for Nintendo Network after the servers go down, it's still the end of an era. @@GaelLazerYT Getting a system for recording is tricky. I sent my console (New 3DS XL) to Loopy over at 3dscapture to get a capture card installed, but it's unfortunately a pretty expensive process and he runs out of stock quickly. This said, if you have a New 3DS/New 2DS, there's also a homebrew capture software you can use wirelessly, but the quality is significantly worse.

The meta car combo for 7 is actually Metal Mario + B Dasher + Red Monster tyres + Peach Parasol / Ghastly glider

Plot Twist! I was the Yoshi in the Toad Circuit Match at 8:47 I am not even kidding. 11 year old me made a pretty bad Mii replica of myself with my own initials attached but I think it helped me... maybe. I wanted to play Mario Kart 7 again ever since I heard the 3DS and Wii U Online was gonna die, and that match is one example of me relearning Mario Kart 7’s physics all over again (seriously, I somehow hit myself with my own Red Shell several times in the section I was online) but it was worth it in the end. My ultimate goal is to finish with exactly 6969 VR by April.

There actually is a drift stat in MK7. It's just hidden. You have to look it up

Unless I’m mistaken, the Wuhu tracks were the first to have major shortcuts discovered. That’s probably part of why they were so popular.

The streets pass ghosts don’t disappear after you play them they get stored in Time trials along with 8 or 9 other ghosts so you can race with 7 ghosts on that track that you just beaten from the street pass on the Mario Kart channel.

SpotPass Time Trials don’t get removed, they just get moved to where you’d select a ghost race.

so entertaining, glad i was recommended this because I've been playing a lot of MK7 online these past weeks to get up to 10K (I'm at 7000 now), I'll tell you this its still alive, but half of the time youre up against less players than you expect, its more fun when youre up against decent players

Any tips to get to 10k vr before online shuts down? Im trying too but its a pain 😭

@TrubbishIsCool568 mainly just have items ready for you to hold on for protection, and just try to stay at a good position to get points. with enough players you can still get a good amount of points without needing first place. terms of character and kart wise choose anybody and use the b dasher with slick/monster/red monster wheels and lastly choose the umbrella glider for a bit of better turning. if anything else, i started with 1K late September, if you're at least playing the game 2-3 hours online daily, it's possible to get up to 10K within a month. online ends at april next year so you'll have a lot of time to get caught up, it could get slightly overwhelmed at the near end but that's like nothing.

also obviously use your items to hit opponents when you feel in the needs to, just try to be cautious with what your opponents have

The thing that charmed me about mk7 was definitely the spotpass time trails I got a few, and it was amazing Of course its like any other time trials with peoples ghosts, but they were like time capsules with multiple people, and it was so awesome

And their spotpass miis would randomly appear in your grand prixs in single player sometimes

In my opinion there isn't such a thing as a "bad" Mario Kart, some games just aren't a select few's cup of tea but it doesn't effect the quality of the game

This is a sad way to learn about the discontinuation of 3ds/wii u online, i thought it would never come, and it's so soon now. 3ds and Wii U were my childhood (im still a kid but let me cook), and seeing all of the services for them slowly crumble one by one, official hardware production, miiverse, the e-shop, and now online itself, along with many other miscellanous discontinuations.

There are two more things which are special to mk7 online: 1.Those people who afk in battle mode to grind VR, so you can hit them over and over again to grind points 2.The mkwii style HACKERS

Mario Kart 7 was actually my favorite version to play online because it was the least broken game. No snaking, no firehopping, no wheelies. Sure I could do all that but it was nice being able to play normal. That, and I believe 7 to date has the best track selection. I always went Mario, Bumble V, Roller Wheels, Paraglider.

Game's more enjoyable to play at a higher level than 8DX is, at least for me Still play it online plenty, so it's a bit sad to see it go, but at the same time I know there will be ways to still access servers

MK Wii is the Melee of Mario Kart. It’s not dying it’s got a huge online community in CTGP and even implemented 200cc (which runs WAYYYY better on Wii than MK8D). MK7 is underrated though. This is just one of those franchises that has been super consistent through the years and hard to mess up. Same with the mainline Mario series.

I love mk7 online, but it's definitely been more buggy lately. The game will crash on the character select screen. It only happens when trying to play online and I havent been able to find anyone having a similar issue. I dont know if it's just my 3ds being weird or if it's something else

Go to Friends/Opponents then scroll to Recent Opponents and the black and white checkered flag indicates a player you can join. This is the only way I've been able to play online for MONTHS!
