I've had several hoyt bows and sold my PSE bow madness awhile back and picked up this bear on a budget and the truth is im not spending the money anymore for top tier bows. Im a working man with a family and this bear is all i need in the woods and id rather put my money on gear and getting to and from my hunts. I helped my sister's boyfriend get setup with his Species he picked up. His draw is a 27" on the bow and I dropped it down to ±63lb (true 28" as specified in the video). I shoot a 2015 model year bear authority I got on clearance in 2016 for $350 (originally $500 package). I have no complaints about my authority. It's set at the 28" mod and measured out to 74lb OTB new. The bow draws smooth and shoots well with little shock. All that being said, I was blown away by how refined the $399 bear species package is. The draw cycle is smoother and it seems slightly more 'dead' at the shot, but partly could be attributed to the lower draw weight it's set at. All in all, it's a tremendously high vale package. I agree completely with your review. No, it won't blow anyone away with it's arrow speed but it's characteristics as a whole is EXACTLY what you want from a treestand hunting bow where smooth and forgiving with clearly adequate velocity meet in about a perfect middle ground. Bear bows seem to retain velocity tremendously well with heavier arrows, better so than most comparable bows, while matching light weight arrow velocities. I'm not a brand snob by any means but I agree that this is the best bow under $500 currently on the market that I've seen or shot in the last 5+ years. And in real hunting situations id use it alongside about anything. It's every bit the bow my buddies Switchback XT or my brothers Drenlin is. Obviously separated by a decade, but those were the best of the best bows at that time, and this is a budget bow fully set up at $400. Add arrows and a release (if you aren't a brand new archer, you already have these) and get to it. The mathews bows I referenced were $800-1000 without accessories at their release dates.

I bought one 3 weeks ago and have been shooting every day for about an hour and the string has already frayed. For the price point I get that some things are probably skimped on so I’ll just buy a higher end string for it. It’s been an excellent bow so far though.

I wax my string every time that I shoot.. I needed to change my string on my BowTech RPM 360 since 2015.. finally doing it now this year however and I'm keeping my old string as a backup just in case..

Does anyone noticed that peep tube is a bit too short and angles the string at full draw? Anyway, nice review. Cheers.

We have noticed that on some builds and also the post on the end of the peep gets into the sight picture. An upgrade I would recommend first day is a standard RAD P38 peep.

Mine is set at 28/70. Gold tip hunter 340s. Would you reccomend the rage 2 blade chisel tip? Thanks. Local bow shop recently went out of biz. I'm a Mena Arkansas hunter.

I would want to get my arrow weight up to 425gr or more to really hammer with those. I like that 425 to 450gr area for our Arkansas deer but if you can still get the speed, a 500-600gr arrow is savage!

The Species is a real adult single cam bow where the Cruzer shines for the 8-12 year old range. The Species tunes better, draws better, has a superior backwall and is faster.

Go with something over 500 grains. 250-300 spine and a cut on contact razorsharp fixed blade Broadhead. A setup like that works really well for Hogs down here in Texas and Deer will not even have a chance.

is Bear still in business ? a friend did not recommended this brand , I cannot understand . he said difficult to find parts, I just bought one from Amazon ( not received yet ) : the model is Bear Rant RTH . cannot find model in the website. but the parcel comes from IL ... I couldn’t understand a single word this guy said. He relied too heavily on technical jargon that I, as someone new to archery, haven’t yet encountered. Given that this video is geared towards new archers, that’s a fatal flaw. A principal rule of public speaking is to speak to the lowest common denominator; or in other words, use common language and explain the jargon you do use so that a wider audience can understand you. I appreciated seeing this bow function and hearing some of it’s specs, but the greater impact of the review was lost on me.

You’re by far one of the better prepared bow reviewers I’ve seen so far, with some of the best presentation. Something you could do to improve is explain some of those terms as you go along; I haven’t seen anyone else who does this, and it would be immensely helpful for new archers like myself to have someone explain those terms in real time as I’m watching the bow be manipulated. I’m sorry my original comment came across so aggressive; I should have approached this as more of a critique than as a counterpoint in a debate. I was more informed after your video than I was before, so it did accomplish its main goal; even if I needed to go google some terms afterwards. :)
