After 20 years of shooting pistol and rifle, this video just changed the game for me as a new bow shooter. The best example I can give is that at 70 yards, trying to focus on the front sight I only hit the target 2/6 times. Following this instruction, I was 6/6 with three in the kill zone. Fantastic instruction.

When shooting pistols and rifles, you're supposed to focus on the target and let the front sight blur out. Thats why you started shooting better. You finally, after 20 years, learned how to aim your gun.
@chadminor23603 жыл бұрын
@@sjeverett75 according to every military and law enforcement firearms instructor (of which I am one) in the USA, you focus on your front sight. That’s why we teach “front sight, front sight, slack, pause, squeeze” to new recruits. I don’t know where you learned to shoot, but you have a lot to learn.

Great advice and makes since. I tell children to focus on whatever it is they're aiming for. The bowling pin you want to hit, where you want the golf ball to land, the basketball basket, the place you want your baseball to go etc. And this doesn't just apply to sports. Whatever you focus on that is ahead of you is how you can accurately achieve getting to that point or goal. Again, great advice and helped me tremendously with aiming and shooting my bow.

I just got a bow tune from my shop and I asked him to take a quick look at me shot process. He was cool enough to help and saw one thing that I needed to know badly. After 34 years of bowhunting, I stopped using a pin last year. I "frame it & claim it" using an EZ-V sight now. I don't even have to remind myself to focus on the target instead of the pin, because there are no pins! It took some practice, but I will never go back to using a pin or crosshair for bowhunting. I don't even use a rangefinder for practice any more. Haven't even touched my rangefinder since last spring turkey season. A doe took me by surprise yesterday morning. I still don't know how she got within bow range without me noticing her, but the ground was damp (quiet). I think she may have been the first deer that I harvested from a hang-on stand in a sitting position. I am usually up long before they reach me. Now that my eyes are older, a sight without pins works better for me. I only share all this, because it fits with what you are sharing. Focus on the target!

Dude, this just helped me in the most unexpected way. Okay, so of course I'm looking for archery tips for myself. Normal. Thank you. I'm absolutely going to try this tomorrow when I practice. BUT, I'm also writing a fantasy novel and, I must admit, working out the logistics for all of the species gets a little technical. Now I've decided that my dark elves are awesome archers, but they also have cat's eyes. This decision was pure inspiration and I'm honestly looking for a way to justify it. Why is this relevant to the cost of tea in China? Because the shape of a cat's pupils allow them to look at a narrow area and keep *everything* in that area in focus. That means that the mouse, the blades of grass between them and the mouse, are all in perfect focus the whole time they're looking. It helps them get perfect aim. (Then they decide to pounce, their pupils go all cray cray in a last ditch effort to gather just a bit more information, and they lose their minds and do their lee roy jenkens bolt for the prize.) Now I knew this little factoid about cats because I love my kitty so, duh. I also love archery and I'm interested. But this video just tied it all in on why my little dark elves are such rockin' archers. They don't have the focus problem that people do! When they narrow in on their target, everything between them and the target is clear as a bell. They don't have to choose. So the information you just provided is going in my book. I'm so grateful that your handle is going in my thank you notes at the beginning of the book. "Bow Only Outdoors" will be in the notes unless you have something you like better. Inspiration comes from the most unexpected places, but it is rare and when it comes, it's absolutely wonderful. So thank you for finally closing my loop!

I release as soon as I get a good sight picture. Hunting for the "perfect" shot just leaves to pin travel. He's correct, nobody can hold anything completely still. Slow controlled breathing and release on exhale. Inhale before the aim, exhale, first good placement and release.

I think its verry interesting what opinions all the different shooters have. On a pistol you focus on the sights on a rifle you should focus on the target on a bow with some sort of aiming device most poeple say you should focus on the pin. Now you say focus on the target witch i have to do anyways because i shoot classic intuitive. My rule of thumb is the one that hits the target is right. So if you dont hit it you just havent found your style. I noticed to if i shoot rifle im much more calm maybe its because i dont see the movement of the rifle that much.
@BowOnlyOutdoors3 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. It’s your perception of the sight and the target and what you’re comfortable with. Most archers find it most comfortable with this method because of the extra movement, but not everyone is the same.

Great advice. I concentrate on the target. I was taught that in the Marine Corps. You want the rear/peep sight and the target to be clear. And you want the front sight post/pin to be blurred. If you're a hu ter, you want to see the movement of your target. So you can alter your shot. You will definitely shoot better. It might not make sense, but once you're accustomed to it, you'll wonder why you did it the other way in the first place.

@@papaschuette kzbin.info/www/bejne/eWrSd2NrotaXrNE Go to the 6.50 mark, buttercup. This was posted 11 years ago. I entered 28 years ago, so I'm not sure what "new Corps" you're talking about. I question if you were actually in the Marine Corps if you were taught to focus on the target with fixed iron sights.

...OK Josh, excellent video. I suffered terribly with target panic (anxiety), not realizing I was focusing on my sight pin. I finally figured it out on my own a couple of years ago but your video and information will save a lot of archers lost time and missed shots. Visually "acquire" your target long before you raise the bow and draw the arrow...

Yes! So true! Have to visually acquire the target before the shooting process even starts. Thank you for watching and for the comment! I know I struggled with it before I understood what I was focusing on.

Good information! Basically the same idea as the split vision method for trad shooting.

Good video. Feel like I shoot better with skinnier pins on the sight probably for this reason
