After reading the responses, it appears there are quite a few people living in that vicinity and having the same bear issues. I live south of Pittsburgh and this past year I have had 5 bears frequenting my property. I never leave the house without bear spray and or my 10mm side arm. Absolutely, Game Commission should have taken action long before. You cannot have bears and humans living together like this. Bears become accustomed to humans. Instead of fearing us they see us and where we live as a food source. This could have been avoided. I know of a bear cop in my area. Any bears that get too "friendly", gets trapped and relocated.

I'm scratching my head over that one too. So what he heard her scream? I bet other neighbors did too but were too embarrassed by their inaction they didn't tell anyone. So I guess this guy decided to venture out & tell the police/wildlife officials/paramedics after they all arrived, when he felt safe to finally venture out & that's how he ended up in this story. smh

Actually,the neighbors,plural,were bore aware of another women who actually had called the game wardens few days before & that thought it was her,instead of Leanne G.Morever,the whole incident was over so fast that which neighbor was the victim.Anerror in the otherwise great presentation was in calling that housing development Lyndora)Highfield which about 4 mile to the slightly Southwest,& has bear sightings and potential problems of it's own.,as does my own area about 3 miles,due west

1. 'There's never been a fatal bear attack in Pennsylvania' is an absolute misnomer. Might be true since the time accurate records have been kept. 2. Bears being comfortable with resident (not transient) humans is not healthy for either. Absolutely the officials were lacking action.
@Nutmeg142

To me it’s silly, I’d rather not be through a non-fatal bear attack either. It’s just time before a bear gets a child or elderly person or just has the right circumstances and it does turn fatal.

I have a Pocono House and Bears climb fences, trees and walls all the time. It's just known that here in the northern parts of PA, woods mean Bears. And if a bear wants to get you, it will get you. But I give credit to her little pup and also to her neighbor! We all say 'why didn't someone just help her?' - in the heat of the moment, anything can change. Be prepared all the time, and never get too comfortable in a place or situation that you let your guard down. She lived in dense Black Bear country, had a garden and bird feeders. Her backyard was dark, and she wasn’t really that alarmed by the sight of cubs. since bears had been spotted in this neighborhood many times before - attacking bird feeders, looking for another meal, wouldn't you think people in this neighborhood would use big flood lights on the back of their house to light up the backyard at night so when your dog starts barking incessantly as Smoke did, the house resident could then turn on the back of house flood light and see WHAT THE HELL was going on back there? from the safety of INSIDE THE house? This is just common sense. In the back of our house we have a flood light which highly illuminates the whole area behind the house. The only wildlife I ever have seen in our back yard after dark have been a small group of kangaroos - certainly not a threat to people walking into their back yard - nothing like encountering a black bear looking for its' next meal. Maybe this neighborhood needs a Neighborhood Watch just for identifying black bears on the prowl - night or day - can be much more dangerous than some rinky dink neighborhood burglar

Lets face it, human population is growing much too fast for me but it is what it is. If the bear population in Pennsylvania has grown from 5000 to 18,000 in just a few years, the only answer I can see is longer hunting seasons. Let out of state hunters come to hunt without a tag purchase, just a permit. The game commission has not been doing their job very well. Black bears are a very dangerous animal.

There have been record bear harvests in at least one of the last few years. One year there was close to 5,000 I believe. Bear hunting is allowed in most counties. But yes as more people move into bear country and aren't careful about the things that attract them, it's always a possibility. Some people just don't take the threat seriously enough or maybe the game commission doesn't. I've spoken with people from the game commission about other issues and they've always been more than willing to communicate with me but of course that's just in my county, Dauphin.

They do have robust hunting seasons in most counties as we have a large black bear population. One of the last few years had a record harvest of close to 5,000 bears if I remember right. But we still have a lot of bears. Usually they leave us alone, but of course bears who find human sources of food can easily become problem bears..

This is truly BS, and it has to stop... it is unacceptable to allow humans such as yourself to wander about freely to do whatever they want. Humans are encroaching on the bears homes, and they have to put up with these humans. Before humans came the bears had no problem and it all changed with the humans invading their forest wood homes for their fancy homes and such. Maybe people like you should be tagged so they could be tracked. Female bears will defend themselves and their babies and if their hungry they will attack yippy dogs and even humans. If this woman had her dog trained to return when called the outcome may have been different. She went off that porch to retrieve her dog to defend the dog that does not listen. The mom bear does was many bears do she attacked the human for we are food for them. When humans are so hungry they will eat whatever, they need to stay alive a bear is no different for they are the apex predator not humans.
@fisherdave9192
@fisherdave9192 7 ай бұрын
Exactly! Don’t listen to the name callers. It stems from a combination of a growing anti-human world view and an out of touch with reality perspective. Those mourning the loss of the bear, or angry it was put down would not have survived 150 years ago. The flourishing of human civilization will always come at some sort of cost to the environment and animals that inhabit those areas. Should we do our best to minimize impact? For sure. But wherever human populations live adjacent to wild animal populations, there’s going to be the potential for unfortunate interactions. Luckily, the woman survived and luckily the bear was killed and cubs removed before another incident happened

I've read and heard several accounts of how the bear populations are increasing in many regions as other nuisance animals like wild pigs and deer. It would seem that maybe our efforts to protect wildlife may be having some real negative results. I'm not a hunter and generally don't care for it but I'm thinking that perhaps the hunting rules should be loosened a bit to help better control these problems.

It's really not good for humans and bears to be this close on a regular basis. Maybe we need more space for the bears, because they shouldn't even want to live in a populated area like that. The city officials should have done something quite awhile ago. The fact she personally had 10 bear sightings in her neighborhood is wild. Bear populations have risen over the sustainability levels in many U.S. areas. Fact: Bears are being killed by ‘fish and game,’ due to starvation. Their populations have become out of balance, certain states in the West, as probably most of us know, are trying to bring back grizzly hunting. There needs to be more aggressive measures taken to protect people from predation.

As both human and bear populations increase so does the overlap. Thus confrontations become more frequent. Add a dog into the mixture, especially an ankle biter, only adds to not so good confrontations. Fish and wildlife face a daunting task. As "Tree Huggers" move into and destroy natural habitat, then put out food. Whether it be for birds, squirrels etc. They are attracting predators, fisher, coyote, fox bears etc. Well regulated hunting, trapping that works with a department that isn't politically driven or cows to special interest. Works well. its science based on facts. Also well regulated hunting, trapping of predators instills a healthy respect between human and wild animals. Think like in several other instances, domestic pet instigated the attack. Along with improper knowledge about feeding wildlife. There's more to it than people know. Sadly it's all available through most every States DIFW websites.

I agree but I am hoping there is a way to balance things out with hound hazing and officer hazing programs around cities that have bear problems. In Idaho, the bears do not encroach on human areas because of our hunting season, in my opinion. They know we are bad news. My place in the woods has only one time in 25 years had a bear visit and he was a young bear who didn't know any better. I didn't kill him and had the FNG guys try to trap him even though it was hunting season. Bears need to be safe outside of hunting season by being taught human boundaries through hazing. It has worked in W. Virginia too BTW

@@scarybearattacks totally on board. If hunting is objectionable. Hazing has been proven to be quite effective. It's still hunting, and requires well trained people and perhaps dogs. It's easier to train a wild bear to stay away. Than it is to train a human from being ignorant. Lol.

Bears are wild animals and encroaching on their territory is not a good idea. Plenty of warning that something like this would happen in this neighborhood.

God bless that little dog he may have saved her life by making the bear chase him away from her. I so think authorities needed to control the bears that were being a menace to the people in that area . This definitely was an aggressive bear how it kept coming back to attack her possible for food

Bears are ApEx predators. Hunters should be allowed to keep the population in check which will also help cultivate a healthy fear of humans.

I know that in areas where deer populations create traffic hazards, some municipalities have paid bow hunters to reduce numbers. Bear hazing would be a comparable service, in my opinion. Towns with bear problems should hire animal control officers to haze bears away from town and housing complexes. Seems to be a good compromise between non-hunting people and safety to me. thoughts?
@AriePharmD
@AriePharmD 5 ай бұрын
@@scarybearattacks By “bear hazing” are you talking like avalanche cannons (loud bang to scare the bear)? This probably would help in 20-30% of bears. The rest could become a nuisance or danger to society (just talking the ones frequenting urban areas).

We do have bear hunting in most counties, and had a record harvest recently of almost 5,000 bears If I remember right. But we still have a large population of black bears in PA's woods. It seems that some areas have more problems than others, particularly where bears find human sources of food. In my area, we've never had a problem, and the males in my family spend many hours in the woods as deer and turkey hunters. Never had an issue and we grew up exploring the woods, too when we were old enough to. Of course we are always armed or in groups and armed.

I have a black pomeranian and dont let their size fool you, they are little fireballs. Dont understand why anyone would let their pet out where there are bears though. The mother bear was just doing what mumma bears do to protect their babies and should never have lost her life because of it, relocate them not kill them.

It seems random to mention what her neighbor heard, right? I put that in there for a couple of reasons. In the sources I read none of her neighbors were reported to have come to her rescue or to investigate why she was screaming. This is concerning. Are they too afraid to venture outside due to the bears in their neighborhood?

I think it is indicative of a situation in which the neighborhood has been forced to accept as normal. They have to live. Dogs have to go outside to go to the bathroom. What we need to find is a balance.

Why did she go back outside after seeing two cubs in a tree which in my opinion was absolutely stupid knowing where's there are cubs the mother bear is close by. People do some of the most redulicous things that causes there own deaths She had to know she could not beat a bear. I don't feel sorry for people that causes there own deaths. I guess she wanted to make a video of her life being wiped out by 🐻🐨 bear's.
