At first I was extremely skeptical when I heard Howard Shore wasn't writing all the music but when they announced Bear McCreary, I felt like there was still hope as he has a good track record of honouring musical themes that preceded him (like Godzilla) whilst adding something new and my god has he done that. I don't think you could have chosen a better person to succeed Howard Shore. So long as the music remains leitmotif-based and broad in its style and orchestration, I think the baton has been passed onto the right person

I've read a lot of comments about how this music reminds this person or that person of video game music as though "its junk food" and less of note. I remember hearing Wagner in bugs bunny cartoons. Did that make the ring cycle simple cartoon music given away for free.? Each person is allowed their own opinion and personal biases. I think it's a worthy goal to appreciate and understand your values but be able to hear and respect other perspectives as well. Howard Shore is definitely appreciated by me. But like my mother who had eight children we were each loved for who and what we were. There is space in my appreciation for Howard. There's space in my appreciation for Bear. I may prefer the Redwoods but I can see what there is to like about New York City. Respect even if differences are noted is one of the ingredients that allows civilization to exist to the degree we have it. I remember my nephew in high school orchestra was under the impression that video game music was provided for free to the creators of the game because it took little or no Talent. That's not much different than expecting music for cartoons to be something to dismiss due to what sounds simple. Gorecki anyone?
@richalexander11382 жыл бұрын
The reason why it's compared to generic video game scoreis that there's nothing memorable about this. It sounds like filler score rather then themes we distinctly remember from Howard shore
@benbrown82582 жыл бұрын
@@richalexander1138 Howard definitely has easy to access themes that fit for example Norse melodic style for Rohan, or English folk structure for the Shire. They fit what people know. Nevertheless they're not just plug and play. We also Peg them to a scene that's been presented. It did not start out that way but Shore's music has become a cultural understanding. We do not yet have the scene to match the Rings of Power music fully. Nor is this truly cinematic composition because this is a television series and not a movie. But as I ended with Henrik gorecki who's considered an incredibly important composer he used a repeating phrase and nothing else for almost 5 minutes that gave no reference at all. Let's wait and see in context before we have the hatchet man Lop off McCreary's fingers. The age we live in currently rapidly leaps to conclusions and judgments. I often do the same but it's much harder to live in a society with headless fingerless neighbors. The only thing I would caution is that you don't allow the music to substitute fully for story or vice versa.

To me the answer is simple : people cant get over howard shore. Its our brain as listeners that does association. And brain hates things that aint familiar (even more when associated with a passion for something .) Thats why 4 chords pop music (may it be rap or rock folk or electro) will always prevail in the top of the charts. Because its easy to follow and our expectations are not that challenged (just add a little something more to make it stand out and people will follow) here its the same. If people heard galadriel theme anywhere else they would like it i think . (And dont get me wrong i would not dare speak like im immune to this. My brain i does this kind of thinking all the time . We're human after all) we should educate ourselves in film scoring . I realised recently for exemple that many people here orchestral films music and are like "duh it sounds like star wars" but only because they never cared to educate their hear to john powell or howard shore or goldsmith. Its pretty normal. I cant myself differentiate the many styles of electro music for a long time ! To sum it up ! Lets educate our heard there a so many good music to discover and this score is one of them

Sadly this sounds like generic fantasy music to me… fancy violin, choir, thundering drums. A simple recipe that people consider EPIC these days but I feel no depth underneath. Shore‘s music for Tolkien wasn‘t that showy at all. He created a true image of Tolkien‘s work in music. It had so much more breath and subtlety, not just a mainstream score but an intellectual understanding of the world. I hope for the best but I don‘t think Amazon is aiming for something similar in terms of seriousness and complexity.
