When I had an long goatee it would split. I had no neck line, so maybe this was the reason. Last 3 years of rocking a full beard, I haven't had this issue.

I suffer from “The Split” on a daily basis and it can be both frustrating and discouraging. One “trick I have found that helps me is using a small clip to pinch together a group of hairs directly under the chin but not visible from the front or sides. Usually the clip is placed closer to the skin which can kind of train the hairs to be more centered or just leave it in all day to add a bit of bulk directly behind the potential split. When using this method I use the small clips that came off of my beard ornament bulbs that I received as a free gift from a Fable Beard Co. purchase. Hope this helps someone out there! 🙏🏻

I can see a fourth cause for it: the hair under the lower lip. They tend to not grow as long as other hair on some people. Therefore, the beard has less thickness in the middle.

Most of the hairs at that point on your face, such as your cheek hairs as well, never grow very long. I wish, that would certainly help!

Beards tend to fill out as they grow out - but only to a point. Most beards begin to thin out as they grow past a certain point too. I have a lot of hair on my cheeks and the front of my chin that stops growing - and contributing to the beard - after a few inches. Somewhere past collar bone length that starts to show in the transparency, shape, and style of my beard. Some forks can be fixed with styling, but if you don't have enough hair to work with, you have to accept it or take a few inches off.

FIRST! My beard definitely has a split at the bottom. My neckline is naturally not very low, so I’ve learned to deal with it. I normally give my beard a pinch at the bottom, which gives it a more rounded look and helps bring that split together.

I am originally from New England, but I moved to Central (Southern lake county) Florida in 2013. I deliver car parts to commercial customers such as repair shops for a living. Many of these shops have their Bays open with fans blowing. This always wreaks Havoc with my beard. In the mirror I have noticed a slightly lower density in the dead center of my beard. It has not been too much of a struggle, but I find if I use a lighter oil with no balm, I don't struggle with this too much. However I do fuss quite a bit with my beard, and it annoys me when these fans mess with my styling. I have a mostly gray two-tone 5 1/2 inch beard. At the moment, I am wearing Copper John's Sundance Gray beard oil. No balm. I wish I had a little more density but this is not what I am working with.

My beard is at a length that it's often going to a french fork. I did started to damp my beard to style it again. I try to do that around 4-5 times a day. While doing that, you can try to pop it back in the center to bring more density in the middle. For the wind, I'm trying to walk with my head turn to one side so my beard can go to my shoulder and catch the wind. You can always help with one hand while you turn or need to pass people. When I style with the blowdryer, I comb it in a direction of a U. If I try to do a V, the french fork is often more pronounced. Thank you for the video 🥰

I love my belly button length beard split. Many years ago when I was but a young beardsman with a beard that was just touching my collar, a distinguished older gentleman looked at me as he was getting off of his Harley and said “Son, you haven’t had a beard until it splits”. A few years later I found out what he meant and have rocked my beard split ever since. When I’m walking in a stiff wind and it’s spout and blowing back half over each shoulder I am in heaven.

i definitely break wind. or wind breaks the beard. one of those. i do get concerned that a lot of wind breaks will cause it to break more without the wind, but i do stick to just light oils and usually with a little hand adjustment, i'm right back on track. I do want to learn a sold braid, however, which will bring it all together in the breeze. i'm not good at braiding and i feel i need a little more length before i really like the look of the braid. still hoping to one day have a full braid neck tie to the waist, but time will tell.

My beard likes to split when it’s only collar bone length. Now that it’s about 8” from my bottom lip, it hangs straight. My right side grows faster than the left, so I have to trim it. But for me, the split never bothered me: I occasionally tie or braid it into two anyway. I am a habitual petter (?) I can’t stop stroking my beard just like a fidget. I have noticed that (at least for me) it helps to keep it straight and not forked. I don’t use product usually. I wash it in the shower and rinse it after meals and when I get up…morning beard is a real thing!!😜. I do oil it (Dr Nicks IPA) and I started using rosemary oil too. My daughter had some and spilled it so I bought her more and it was a 2 pack so I kept one. I’m working on my own oil with fir, sage and rosemary oils. It’s done amazing things for softening and strengthening my beard!! No more itchy too!! (Nicks that is, I haven’t made mine yet, still researching the ingredients)

Now I'm riding my ebike a lot more around town, my beard is parting down the middle. Not a lot you can do at 20mph to stop it, unfortunately. So I either just go with it or, if I'm going into town for a meeting or need to look a bit less "windswept", I'll tie the beard up into a chin ponytail for the ride. I always put a chicago comb in the panniers for when I get there anyway, but tying it up does help a bit. I think it's just inevitable with longer hair that it will part somewhere - I'm sure it happens with head hair too - and I guess the chin is the most natural place for that to happen with a beard.

Thanks Dan! Great video. Mine happenned somewhere around 10", partially wind but moreso man made neckline issues. I live right on the coast in the UK so there always seems to be wind present, even a minor gust can knock me out of shape. I also used to trim my neckline to be tidy and it was way too much, until I watched another of your videos stating to leave it, huge advice!! and that is 75% of the issue, I have to trim back every now and then to let things catch up, it's getting there now thankfully! I have found that on particularly windy days a hair tie an inch or two up does a decent job of holding things down, or at least letting the wind take everything in the same direction! But of course you absolutely cannot use any balm or butter if you're rocking a hair tie and planning on taking it out once you arrive. If you've seen beardmeatsfood he rocks the hair tie look all the time and it looks pretty killer!

Fun reason for beard forking: I play billiards pool and for good form, one must rest their chin on the cue. After a few hours of playing and stroking the cue forward and back, the beard gets parted haha. A wide tooth comb and brush help fix it afterward.

I unfortunately live in the windest state or atleast the state with the windiest city. I have found that if i dont try to fix it while in the wind, it prevents it from doing anything crazier. I will just fix it once I'm out of the wind. The only issue I have with the splitting is when I use heat. Specifically a heat brush. Early in I was only styling it one way and never alternate the direction I would apply the heat. Later on I learned to change the direction i used the heat and now its much less prominent. Just style one direction on day maybe two days then change directions by the 3rd day. I usually alternate my heat application in 5 diffrent directions. Awesome video Dan. When ever you visit Kansas, you will be forever happy you dont have these winds. 97-103mph gusts two nights ago. Id say 20-25 is average with 50 being atleast 1 day a week. Crazy!!! Lol

This makes a lot of sense. I only get a fork when the wind slaps me in the face. When it does, I turn my head to one side or the other, and it keeps it together. Do a quick pat down when i get inside, and good to go. The butter and balm also makes a lot of sense. If I do use any butter in the morning, it is a very small amount.

I Definitely get the fork, the last time I did the yeard I was using butter during the day and on windy days I got the fork. I am six months into my second yeard, I’m not using butter during the day and I am already experiencing a much easier time styling and keeping my beard styled just using the oil. I have a naturally higher neckline but I also stopped shaving my neck when my beard started to cover my neck so I’m hoping to not experience the dreaded fork as much. With that said though I have every intention of growing my beard without trimming any length for two years so if it splits I’m going to embrace it as much as possible 😂

Great video as always. I agree completely with your recommendations, as I do them too (low neckline, oil only during the day, etc). For the wind and humidity, our greatest enemies lol, I also use those tiny beard rubber bands. I know you're not a fan of using beard ties, but I find that using 1 band at the very bottom of the beard, like only 1-inch of hair being bound, protects from the elements, doesn't detract from the overall beard shape, and adds a discreet accent to the beard style. For a properly oiled beard, there is no damage. I'm curious if anyone has tried this as well, and what Dan's thoughts are on this. Great video as always!

Greetings, Dan, As my beard re-lengthens after the January post-Santa-season trim, I’ve noticed the split is more likely to occur when the longest ends are getting whispy. This is when normal wear-and-tear thins out the end of my longer beard resulting in less of the core beard being there to fill it out. After a maintenance trim to even out my beard to the core length, the fork is much less likely to appear. Big fan of not shaving or trimming a neckline with a long beard. For one thing, why bother? But more importantly, as you said, the neckbeard provides so much “behind-the-scenes” support and fullness to the cheek and chin beard that drape over it. Some beard bling, like a bead or sleeve can help resist the wind’s parting effect, but watch out in a wind strong enough to whack that bling across your face!

Yep I hate the split lol. When I first started growing the beard I was triming my neck all the way to the jaw line even when I got length to fit it in the beard guards for work ( food manufacturing plant ) that caused several problems like lack of density, very transparent and the split. I'm coming up on 3 years of beard growth and stopped shaving the neck line about 2 years ago which solved the density and transparency issues but my beard apperenty just likes to naturally split. I do use butter on a daily basis but I may stop using it on my days off and see if that helps.

So I noticed this in my beard when growing it out longer than I ever have. My hairs on the side of my chin seem to grow or last longer than my chin hairs and grows this way… I thought it was a mistake but it could be genetic right? I guess I’ll rock it.

Maybe for those who have natural/on purpose french forks, I'm thinking about an alternative: to actually make it your style and take it to the extreme! A long or very long french fork could be styled with two or more beard beads and have a somehow-vikingish look. Perhaps going even further and use beads in your moustache (doesn't have to be that long) to complete the effect. I mean, many rock/metal artists sport that style. Marco Hietala (ex-Nightwish, Tarot) is a good example. He has a pretty amazing french-forked goatee, kinda his signature. Or just the _classic quesque_ french fork. There are plenty of possibilities to style it, even some real geometrical capilar monuments, for short/medium/long french forks. Thanks as usual Dan, and stay bearded... or fork bearded!

Now i my really scared to even touch them as in if they might break. My question to you is: How to strength my overfacial hairs from mustache to beard? Awaiting for your response. Longest I’ve grown my beard was for one year, and up until that point, I had not noticed any forking. I am curious to see if it would beyond that. I have a higher natural neckline, which is pretty much where my head meets my neck, so I can see some transparency or forking happening eventually. I think the natural waviness I have helps a lot.

The advice of “leaving the neck line” has ruined me … now that I know, I can’t help but notice how many fellow beardsmen unnecessarily diminish the greatness of their beard by shaving too high on their necks. Most beards look SO much better with a natural neck line. Thanks, Dan!

My fork was absolutely severe for years. I did all the wrong things including using balm with a waist length beard shaving my neck way too far up and I’m an incredibly fast walker. I don’t think that helped. Now that I only use butter at night, it’s a bit shorter and I grew out my neck hair. It looks about a zillion times better but the fork is still there at times.

Thanks Dan, I watch all your tutorials. Unfortunately where I live I deal with wind and humidity so I battle the fork (which I don’t really mind) and the frizz (which I hate but balm helps with that) what I cannot do is get rid of the jaw line dip. I wash and condition daily (deep condition once a week), pat dry, oil (wait a few minutes) , then blow dry and comb in every direction, but around the jaw, and still no success.
@DanCBearded
@DanCBearded Жыл бұрын
Key is dialing in the routine of using a round boars brush and the blowdryer to go against the direction of the wave. Just takes lots of trial and worries. All hairs can be trained for the day
@johnbaker1901
@johnbaker1901 Жыл бұрын
Not sure it will help you but it helped get my waves out. Take a few days off from styling just wash and oil let the beard be natural for a bit. Then get a detangleing brush ( I use a combo detangleing / boars hair brush from mad viking ) to style with I found with a comb I was pushing too hard and following the curve of my face.

Hey Dan. I’ve recently started having this issue a bit so I revisited this video. The only factor it could be other than my genetics is the humidity with the longer beard. I have a completely natural neckline and the wind isn’t part of the equation for me. Did you collect any additional solutions other than the light oil? If so, could you share and what are some of recommended light oils? Thanks!

Ive been using elastic hair ties (on the larger side) only on my walks since the wind would part my beard so easily. I always wondered, can this be damaging to the hairs? Maybe the smaller the tie, the more potential there is? I always brush it out and wash it afterwards and don't really see damage

Try a clip instead. It holds just as well and doesn’t pull on the hairs when you want to take it out.

I don't have that problem yet, but I'm probably at/approaching the 3 inch range. I do shave my neck a few inches to just past my Adam's apple. Is it too late? If I stop letting my barber "clean" up my neck will things take its natural course or is there some things I have to do to make it all the same length since the rest of my neck/face already has such a big head start? irrelevant question: I switched recently from Honest Amish to some monestery beard oil from Mount Athos, can I send you some to review? (Not affiliated, I just want to know if what im using is good stuff) Ingredients in order: 1 bottle: laurus nobilis extract, laurus nobilis oil, helianthus annuus seed oil 2nd bottle: rosmarinus officinalis extract, helianthus annuus seed oil, rosmarinus officinalis oil It's $6.58 for each 50ml and I feel that's far to cheap to be good, but idk.
