Great Video DanC! I always had split ends in my beard for the longest time. I’d constantly have to trim little bits off to avoid losing the entire hair. After I sat down, and really evaluated my particular situation, the split ends stopped. I broke everything down. I was using the right amount of products, wasn’t causing heat damage, there wasn’t trauma going on etc... and then it hit me like a brick wall. WATER. I wasn’t drinking nearly enough water. I started drinking a gallon of water a day, and literally within a couple weeks I had zero split ends. It was hard at first. To go from drinking 64oz a day to over a gallon is a big change. It isn’t the amount of water that’s hard. You can easily just take a few chugs every hour, and get a gallon down. The hardest part was going to the bathroom non stop. I think I was going to the bathroom every 45min to an hour the first week or so. Extremely annoying. Fast forward now where it’s been almost a year straight of drinking a gallon of water each day, and it’s fantastic. No split ends, beard is soft and healthy... but all the other benefits were what really stand out. No more chapped lips or dry mouth. Overall I’ve been more comfortable, and not getting hot as much. Skin and Hair are healthier. Not to mention all of the benefits you can’t see; like promoting healthy overall organ, and body function. It’s a game changer. What started as a way to just help my beard; had become a lifestyle change. Now, bathroom routine is back to normal, and don’t have to go non stop. I don’t have to think about it. It’s just part of the routine, and I’ll never stop. Caring about my beard has lead to caring more about myself as a whole. Self Care = Self Love.

Dan C Bearded Absolutely! My body loves it. I can definitely feel it if I’m not where I need to be as far as water intake throughout the day. I can’t believe I spent so long being dehydrated. While I was in the weightlifting world, I probably drank 2 gallons+ a day, without knowing it. It was just part of the training. I didn’t have to try to drink a gallon of day because throughout training, it would just happen. After I retired, I must have spent 3-4 years drinking almost no water. I would drink Gatorade, or Soda. Literally that’s it. At my worst I would finish three 12 packs of soda a week + a 12 pack of Gatorade a week. Just straight sugar. Now, I have maybe one soda a week as a guilty pleasure. 99% of my liquid intake is water, and I feel amazing. Not joking fellas, literally within 2 weeks of drinking a gallon of day, split ends, and breakage were GONE. If you care about your beard, and you obviously do if you’re watching this video and part of the best community in the beard game! The Command Army! You’ll make sure you get that water in! Whether you can start drinking a gallon a day right away, or you need to build up to it, do it! Start by drinking half a gallon a day for a week, then 3/4 of a gallon etc... You can do it! And your beard and your body will thank you for it 👍

You’re the man Dan C. My first beard was riddled with split ends in the middle of the hair shaft and at the ends. It made my beard look wispy and unhealthy and unfortunately I had to shave completely and start again. I started to drink a lot more water and improved my diet to ensure the hairs come out healthier from within but then I discovered beard oil and quality beard combs like Kent combs which made a huge difference because before that I was using cheap combs that were made in a press and had all those jagged edges that were contributing to and causing more split ends. Great advice from you kind sir!

I don't know if you've done one, but a good video topic would be on saving the hairs you have. Many guys want a magic pill to grow new hairs, but keeping the ones you already have is just as important AND POSSIBLE. For example, the topic of this video fits perfectly and many of your others touch on it. Also, how to brush without breaking hairs, how to deal with tangles (I've sacrificed many to remove a stubborn tangle), impact of beard accessories (bands & clips etc), dyes, environmental things (chlorine in pools, low humidity air etc). Does anything, like biotin, make a hair stronger? What is normal strength for a beard hair? BTW I'm surprised at how easily my hairs will break when pulled. I have no idea if it's normal. I'm of the mindset that aside from severe medical issues nothing can make more hair grow other than surgery, but it seems like there are loads of things to protect what you have from breaking off.

I would always fix the split ends right away whenever I see it. It does help while healthy growing the beard. Especially when combing or brushing. That's one reason why I do NOT agree with those bearded guys that are adamant not to trim when growing their first yeard. I did it once, and it makes the problem worse, to begin with, it made my beard looking horrible and was very unkempt and wild. I am sure you have seen guys in some KZbinrs proves my point that is not the way to start. The second time around I faithfully lightly trim and even split ends and notice it creates good results while growing my yeard the second time around. Also, my beard now knows what I want and where to go when styling as the first time around it wouldn't obey.

Fellow calico beardman here - I have white, blonde, copper, ginger, brown and black in my beard in pretty much equal proportions. I find that I get only split ends rather than split middles like you, but oddly they appear to happen most with the black hairs. I honestly can't remember ever getting a split end with the lighter colours. The different colours in my beard seem to shed at the same length and same rate however (when you're a bald-face no-one ever tells you that beards do in fact molt constantly!). I balm and comb every day, if that makes any difference.

Dan C Bearded - yeah I can grow the nastiest split end fuzz ball better than anybody - been there done that!

Excessive dry combing your beard shreds your beard hair and splits them, especially grey beards like mine. It wreaks hellacious havoc on your beard hairs and splits the heck out of them - been there done that!

Dan - great info as always I think there is a perception issue concerning split ends and beard growth The issue with split ends is that it causes hair to weaken and break so you end up with a shorter hair length. A shorter beard over time - gives the appearance of that growth is slower So while growth stays the same, the length of the beard is negatively impacted due to breakage and such I think it would be helpful to focus on, that while beard growth stays the same, your beard will get shorter because the ends will split and be more prone to breakage For some reason at the beginning of this year, I had a problem with split ends and breakage - I took the steps to correct the problem including trimming about 1.5 inches off the bottom, but now because of breakage the bottom of my beard is a bit more wispy than it was #WizardTips

I would have terrible beard split ends if I hadn’t found the bearded community wisdom like DanC, et al on uTube in 2017. I’m going on two years of my bearded journey and I rarely find beard hair split ends due to following the beard care regimens suggested by DanC and others. This is a great topic and keep’em coming. Two thumbs down 👎🏼 on this video. What’s not to like about it? This video is purely informational based on science. Very curious!! 🤔

Yes, you will likely feel knots or a different texture
