The whole thing about marking the line first then going in from the sides worked awesomely. The only one flaw in the plan was that after I finished I needed my Wife to cast an eye over it where she found some stragglers that i'd missed. All great points...all points I need to pair with buying a new trimmer and finally man up and do. I wanna say you've shown this process in some other videos, but it's always nice to see it come back around as a refresher for anyone (like me) who's been hesitant to get that transparency out of there. Ashamed to admit it, but I probably have more than I should because of it, but the whole "addition by subtraction" is a mantra I need to adopt if I hope to get my beard more compliments than the mask that covers it :)

Your advice to keep your head at a normal tilt is very important. I couldn’t see transparency until you turned to the side; that was probably lighting. You may consider a shirt with a pattern or graphic that would show through the transparency to help viewers see just what you’re after. Well done and helpful!
@dalesoblo30103 жыл бұрын
Hi Dan, After 3 1/3 years of no trim I finally got brave enough. So I trimmed (with scissors) the long stringy bits off and evened it out at about 18 inches (measured from lower lip). I’ve always thought about the hairs that grow longer as the vanguard and eventually the others catch up. But after 3 1/2 years some of the vanguard had gotten to the 24 inch length. I do like how even the beard is now and how it all blows together in the wind. I do miss the length and the witchy vibe. I probably won’t trim again for at least a couple years. Still seeking terminal length. It’s a journey in progress. Thanks again for the great content. And your beard does look amazing. I have to add this thought. When you look at long hair on men or women I notice that by about 12 inches it becomes transparent to some degree. Maybe it’s tresses of hair laying in different places. So why not look at the beard in the same light?

I just tried your method and it worked well. My only issue was I didn't listen and I think I rushed it a bit lol. Plus I think I lifted my head too much and got a wierd angle from front to back (neck). Atleast it was only like 1-2 inches and it was first trim so I needed to get rid of the transparency. My beard looks a lot thicker now and with the clean cut at the bottom, my beard looks more maintained. I'll just have to wait a few months for it to grow back and try again.

I do want to add a little cautionary note for my white bearded kin... White hair is by nature transparent, if you wear something with a pattern IT WILL SHOW! Dan is 100% correct when he talks about it getting wispy, use caution and only trim the wispy! About six weeks ago, I was feeling like mine was tapering to a point... I don't like the pointy look on me... You talked about this style trim in the Wednesday beard advise live stream (If you aren't watching this, you should... Blow out Baby!) I took about an inch and a half off the end, and went for a more flat but round look like you show here... (Wide and blunt like me... LOL) I'm not a subscriber to the no trim thing, I've probably erred on the other side and trimmed too often... I usually go to the barber, but wanted to address the point, and not wait until last week. I went to the barbershop, she tapered my sideburns nicely to match the haircut, but said I did a good job with the shape, and only fixed a few long stragglers. Before the trim, I felt like growth had significantly slowed almost to a stop. But since the trim the length I took off is back...

That's a decent trim, you just went in chopped it down surgically. I have question, are there different techniques for when your beard is curlier and you want a straight line boxed instead of rounded? I do my "big" trimming once a month since I moved on from using guards. I'm still learning about what parts grow faster. My main monthly cut usually involves the neckline and ear area. My cheek line looks good and even without any trimming at all. I have a thick mustache and in the past I've only let it grow to top of top lip. I see your mustache and that's the look I'm going for. Any pointers during this early stage where my mustache is starting to cover lip, working it's way down to bottom lip? Never mind I found an older video you made. Thank you

Ignore the itch that happens and be patient! I had that problem at first and always trimmed at it. Invest in mustache wax or strong beard balm to help with guiding those hairs to the side. Also, a mustache comb does wonder as it perfectly can fit comfortably under the nose to brush the hairs properly to the sides. Now my only issue is the long mustache hairs near the sides curling back towards my mouth 🤣 Good luck!
