Our local Goodwill has gotten so expensive I haven't been in there is years. I recently downsized a lot of stuff and donated to a thrift that donates all monies to the local Ambulance Squad. They are so appreciative of all donations and prices are still very low, so the elderly (like me) and people who are financially strapped can afford that winter coat etc.

Hi, this is California Jill. I'm new on here but if I learned anything growing up in Flat Rock. NC from my Grandma, Mother and all my Aunts and Great Aunts it was how to season my cast iron pots and pans and how to cook just about anything in them. I also learned to buy Made in USA cast iron. The stuff in stores these days that's made in China warps like crazy. If you ever burn a cast iron pan, or find a burned one for sale, my Cherokee elders taught me to leave the pan out in the hot sun. The sun will draw all that char on the pan's surface til it lifts up and cracks off. Then just wash it well, go through the process to season it all over again and your pan is good to go again. You seem like a real sweet couple. Good hunting!

He had an old wooden tripod and some hose clamps. And we strapped the telescope on it. Then one clear night we took it out and looked to see how good it was. My pops lined it up on what I thought was a star. And said look through the lens. And when I did. It wasn't a star that I saw. It was Saturn with all of its rings!!! I was like 7 at the time. The old time comedian Phil Silvers went to Goodwill when he heard the NYC store had pianos. His young kids wanted one so he bought a beat up grand piano. The tuner told him to get it full restored and keep his kids away because it was the 2nd piano ever produced by Steinway. I think he said he bought it for $25.00 When I was in high school a friends mother went to the Salvation Army store to get Halloween decorations. There were two large candelabras that she thought were cool for the party. I think they were $5.00. She took them home to clean them because she was going to spray paint them. She found out they were solid silver. Added to that when she got them appraised it turned out there was a makers mark on each and they were identified as being manufactured in Spain about 1500 AD (CE).

Now im not going to say, what particular items , but what ive noticed is people bid on these items, and they get extremely high $$$ in price, way over of what it is worth! And then in about a week later i see the same auction lots come up again, and whats happening is the people that get the last bid arent paying for the item! Which makes me wonder? Is goodwill bidding on their own items, to jack up the bid? I do know if the last bidder doesnt pay for an auction item, they will lose there ability to buy on shopgoodwill online! I have a set of 21 different (including lids) Griswold cast iron pans/griddles/Dutch oven etc, My Grand mother left them to me when she passed in 2005. She took a lot of pride in them and how she came to own them after buying a small town restaurant back in 1952. Each piece looks perfect, but I am unsure how to nail down the exact date but I looked them up and placed them being made from 1924 to 1940. They are the "Large Block" with heat ring set and would have sold for roughly $45.00 - $65.00 (best I can tell) for all I have. Finding a few of the same era pieces I have online shows most each piece going for well over $120.00 to $200.00 each, a few for over $400.00 each. I will never sell them, I love cooking with them and I keep them on display when not in use on a hanging rack in my kitchen.

I used to do this in Knoxville Tennessee but most second hand stores have raised their prices so high that they want $45 for used shoes. Making it cheaper to shop at the mall clearance racks.

A thrift store I know of has raised prices of their clothing like that; like shoes for up to 20 and as high as 50. I think they now look up everything online before they put it out on the floor. A lot of it is that customers are reselling lots of it. One person is in there every day that they out out clothes when they put them out. He has 3000 items listed on ebay; who knows how much on other sites. Buys up all the decent condition name brand clothes. Strangely, I've noticed if they skip a usual day or restock later than normal, he's not there. Makes it tough for people like me who shop for good clothing for cheap to wear, not resell.

I stopped doing business with Goodwill when I donated some dishes and then saw the same dishes for sale for more than I paid for them originally.

I would love to have that Ratfink poster for my Mancave. I mean, I grew up with him and had all of the models. That's so cool. Is it signed or numbered by Big Daddy Ed?

I love finding treasures. I only began selling my surplus on eBay because I am out of room. My prize find was a 15 dollar table that turned out to be from the Victorian era and sells for about $1200 on Chairish. It's not for sale. I love it too much. 😂

I think they could sell twice as much if they had lower prices. Afterall, everything they sell was given to them. At the store I use to go to, was selling girls and ladies tops, no matter if it was a childs little pull over or a ladies long sleeve shirt, for $4.69. If they would cut that in half, they would sell twice as much and probaby make a bigger profit. You can go to thrift stores or yard sells and buy for way less. I quit going. Especially when they are making a fortune and pay employees so little.

They mark it down half after a certain number of days and then it goes to the bins where it sells cheap

That air machine is a ozone generator. You will want to take the plastic plate with wire grate on it out and wash it in warm soapy water to clean and rejuvenate it. It creates ions and ozone, great machine worth every penny you paid for it. Back in the day new it sold for 500.00 dollars and more.

I've heard about them. "Ozone!! It'll make the air in your home smell FABULOUS!!" Then I read where ozone generators are *TERRIBLE* for kids with asthma (or I guess, any breathing issue). Not sure of the mechanism, but I've heard of one loving mom, bought an ozone generator for her asthma- son, then first night she heard him gasping for breath in the middle of the night. She made the connection herself, but they had to go to ER middle of the night. Good thing she was a light sleeper.

@@youresoakinginit2113 yes it's like right after a lightning storm or standing beside a fax machine. Has a very distinct odor. In small amounts it's ok but at high levels it's corrosive. It's a free radical which means it has a extra molecule of oxygen. Ozone is used as a great disinfectant for water purification and other things. Odor removal for automobiles also. So yes it's good and bad. Good for us I'm low levels and bad at high levels. Just like anything else. All things in moderation.

@@youresoakinginit2113 I don't have a breathing issue, but I read that ozone can trigger migraines, which I have had in the past. I have an air purifier with ozone option and always turn that off.
