kzbin.info/www/bejne/hpvCfWevjrtlick this noise is coming from a very bad rear wheel bearing. This bearing is just about to let go. If you hear a whirring sound like this like this I would definitely not drive the car any longer. It is close to letting go. It's almost a grinding sound that you're hearing.

@@0110x okay Karen I understand please check to see if you feel vibration when you're driving if it's noise without a lot of vibration if it's a whirring sound but not a lot of vibration sound then it's probably not too bad yet. But if you're feeling vibration and it's kind of a vibration coming up to the car this is a bad indication. And the biggest indication would be if it is actually getting hot the wheel is getting hot to the touch and maybe like you're going to be able to cook on it if it was that kind of hot this is really not good. I was a car dealer before and I've had many cars has bad bearings. The Jaguar that you see in the video when I took the bearings off they were making a lot of noise no vibration and only a little bit of heat. But when I took the bearings off they were completely fine I mean they were making a slight noise and obviously they were not perfect but they were not going to fall apart in any week or two weeks it would have been 3 months. But I have seen cars when the bearings are right ready to let go the wheel actually gets smoking hot. And you can even smell something. If that's happening and you're feeling a lot of vibration to the wheel or through your seat then I would not continue to drive the car. Even renting a car would be a better option

@@edgarordorica7919 this is a little bit worrying. I have a feeling that one of the bearings has collapsed and it's scraping on the bearing race. It may be something else is squeaking like shocks. The way to answer all these questions is to do the heat test because if it is the bearing that squeaking it's going to be getting extremely hot. In that case no I would not drive a car anymore at all. It could come apart on you if it's getting that hot and squeaking. If it comes apart it'll lock up the wheel. Please do the heat test after you've driven it for 15 minutes but be careful you could burn yourself if it's really really hot. that will let you know what's going on here. Please post us back and let us know

@@QOSQualityofSpeed could i ask you, which part of the tire should i be feeling for heat? Thanks take care
@QOSQualityofSpeed
@QOSQualityofSpeed 2 жыл бұрын
@@boxybrown4278 sure, Glad to help, actually the tire which is the rubber around the wheel you don't need to feel that for heat at all. You want to feel the wheel which is the metal part in the center that the rubber is wrapped around. That's called the wheel of the car. You might also hear it called the rim. You want to feel in the center of the rim. Right around where the lug nuts are these are the bolts that hold the wheel to the car they're large. Put your hand directly on these bolts and also in the center of them. If you have a lot of heat here that is a sign that the bearings are going bad. The more heat the worse that they are. If you really feel that you're beings are bad be careful when you put your hand here because it can be hot I mean extremely hot. But that is unusual it's only an extremely bad bearings and you've been driving them way past when they should be.

This is the best video I have come across. I initially suspected the whirling noise I started hearing from the rear of my car was a bad wheel bearing. Then I thought maybe it could be the deferential. After watching this I am 99% convinced it’s a bad wheel bearing. When I put the car in reverse I hear a metal clunking noise as the wheel roll. Tomorrow when I get to work I’m going to do the heat test. The whirling noise started near the end of last month so I should have plenty of time to get it taken care of. Best to diagnose this problem yourself because a shady mechanic could easily tell you it’s a rear diff problem which costs a lot more than replacing a wheel bearing.
@QOSQualityofSpeed

Thank you for the compliment on the video. Yes I am really trying to help people understand which bearing is bad and the special way that car dealers learn to do understand this. I was a car dealer. Your car could possibly have 3 reasons that the sound could be coming. One could easily be the differential bearings there are 2 bearings in the differential on Either side and there is also 1 bearing coming from the drive shaft So there should be 3 bearings in the differential. In some trucks there is also a Carrier bearing on the drive shaft about halfway through. This would make a sound underneath the car in the middle. That being said it's kind of difficult sometimes to hear where it's coming from as you're driving. the clunck that you hear when you put it in gear I'm very sure that that is a bad universal joint on the drive shaft. These are not hard to change look at both of them to make sure that both are in good condition if you twist it back-and-forth if there's a lot of play before it starts to rotate it's to rotate it means that It's a little joint inside there are starting to wear down.. This also can create a sound as you drive but usually it's a clunk when you shift it back-and-forth. Of course it can be one of your wheel bearings and because you hear it mostly in the back I'm gonna guess it's 1 of the rear wheelbarings. However they usually go out on both sides of the car at the same time so both real or both front. The reason for this is because they have similar wear and the seals that seal out the water are of the same age. Is once one seal starts to leak the other 1 is also gonna be leaking. Is then the bearings inside begin to rust and become slightly not round. Please keep us up-to-date from what happens it's happens when you look at the bearings when you go to work write us write everyone here and tell us which bearing you found was bad. And if it does turn out to be a Carrier bearing or a bearing the differential let us know that too. I'm happy to help with any questions that you have

Oh my god....thank you so much for this video. The internet has my gf thinking that just because she drives with a wheel bearing making any noise at all, that means her wheel is about to violently break off and kill everybody on the road. I've tried telling her that shes okay for a couple weeks till I can replace her hubs, but she's too busy reading and listening to idiots. So, I've sat her down, and made her watch this video. Though she still worried, as she should be, she's no longer damn near in tears of absolute terror while driving (which, I try to convince her that this much fear and anxiety while driving is much more dangerous to her and others than simply a small amount of noise coming from her wheel.) Thank you so much. Nobody makes videos like this.

wow I'm really glad that it helps. Yeah if it just started making noise no way at all that it will come off. When you take the hubs off take a look at the bearings inside I bet they're going to be absolutely intact perfectly in place. They're just slightly out of rounds I mean like micrometers slightly out of round. To be honest you probably could drive like that for 6 months. I wouldn't go taking a long cross-country Highway trip. But back and forth around town no problem at all. Once it gets really really bad and the noise is more like a grinding noise and it's producing a lot of heat this is when the wheels about ready to come off. I actually had a car like that once when I was a car dealer that I was trying to get back to the dealership and yes it was bad. You could even smell the very hot metal of the wheel. It didn't do anything to the tire it didn't do anything to anything really except for it as soon as I jack the car up the wheel fell off in my hands. So that's when the bearings are absolutely destroyed inside. But when you first get a little bit of whirring sound it's not as bad as you're imagining in your head.:-)

Greatly appreciate the knowledge.

I'm very glad to help. this is not a very difficult job. You could even get a traveling mechanic that you could find on Craigslist to do this. It's not something they could mess up easily I think. Any reasonably competent mechanic take care of it and it shouldn't cost you more than 100 USD per side. But you have a lot of time I think if it just started to make the whirring sound. Now it also could be brakes but that is a different sound it's like a scraping sound a grinding when your pads wear out. if it's brake pads the grinding will become actually metal-to-metal and it will be pretty unbearable. So that should be addressed very quickly. but if it's bearings just remember you have a lot of time.

Please let us know what happened. If you were able to find out which bearing it was everybody would like to hear about that. I hope you were able to do it for like $160 per side. This should be $100 labor and $60 for the part.

Just make sure it's not getting really warm. If you're feeling play a slight bit of play but it still rolling OK and not getting really hot you've got time. If you ever stop and park the car and it's very hot even steaming or smelling you could smell it yeah your wheels about ready to fall off but I think you're not anywhere near that situation. Probably if you took it apart now the bearings would still be in place and everything would be 100% it's just ever so slightly not round.

I'm going to bet that you're going to find that that it's 100% intact no problem at all but it's just running out of lubricant in the bearings are slightly not round. Also it could have rust inside which is what usually kills bearings. I did a video recently about how bearings are destroyed sooner than normal. A big one is water and dirt.

This was really helpful. I just bought a Rav 4 with a bad rear right wheel bearing. the mechanic said it could go anywhere between 50km - 2000km, wasn’t too worried about it but said it’s better to fix immediately. I checked after listening to this video and no heat . Mechanic said it was loose but not about to fall off. For now I’m leery about driving it on highways because I don’t want to generate too much heat and cause more damage. There’s also a broken coil spring on that same side. I’m more confident to drive on it now after this, before I thought the wheel might fall off. Either way, it’s scheduled to be fixed in a month. Hopefully it’s fine for that time
@QOSQualityofSpeed

@@el7830 probably what happened is they hit something really hard on that side which broke the coil springs and damage the wheel bearing at the same time. A wheel bearing is not that hard to fix and it would be better to address that sooner It’s a rear wheel bearing am I right if it’s in the rear well you could lose the wheel. But you probably would not lose complete control although I did spin around one time when my wheel bearing fell apart in the rear. If you start hearing heavy grinding sound. I would definitely stop driving I’m not exactly familiar with the RAV4 and how the suspension is set up there but I believe that a wheel bearing it’s probably on an axle. It might be something around 600 bucks to fix. Or it could be a hub replacement which you could buy for probably around $200 And then the labor to put it on

Thanks for sharing it, I did exactly what you described here, without watching your video, I arrived late to watch it. And yes, this method works, I was trying to figure out which rear wheel bearing was the culprit. I found it after driving in the motorway and stopping in a shopping centre and touching all the rings. I changed the bearing and am super happy now. I noticed too the brake pad was very worn out the inside one, which is another characteristic sometimes of a bad bearing. I noticed the bad bearing "they're really two inside" the outer was with some play, the wheel never shake in my tests with my hands trying to detect any play when I jacked the car. but that minimal play wore out quickly the inside break pad. the caliper is with only one piston. so, yes, the heat in the nuts, says a lot. Good video. "English is not my first language"

I’ve been racking my brain for a couple days now watching so many videos on here… My RX330 had an issue a long time ago that I didn’t address because I stopped driving the car. It scrapes at low speeds rhythmically. Eventually, after like 5 minutes off driving, it starts thumping in the same cadence(but faster because I’m driving at higher speeds around 40 mph. I’ve jacked, I’ve pushed pulled the tire and every part of the suspension system that I can find and everything is tight. I watched this video, took it for a spin and the front passenger center cap and lugs were pretty hot. The other 3 were cold. It’s so bad that when I coast at slow speeds the “sound” slows the car down. Hopefully replacing the bearing will do the trick. Thanks for the video!

Sounds like it could be brakes, when they heat up and expand a bit they can start to scrape, likewise the brake fluid itself can expand and cause clearances to become too tight, check it’s below the ‘max’ line. And if the brakes are old, maybe try replacing the pads. Unless you’re sure it’s the wheel bearings.

I've been driving on this noisy wheel bearing I kid you not I've been driving on it for 30,000 miles. I've had wheel bearings replaced before and I know which sounds they make when they're close to failure. This one has been extremely noisy this entire time but there is still not much play in the wheel, no joke, and I am just baffled by it.
@QOSQualityofSpeed
@QOSQualityofSpeed Жыл бұрын
I have seen that before actually. Is the wheel slightly difficult to turn when you jack up the car does it take a lot of effort more for that should for you to spinet? This means the hub assembly the bearing inside is definitely bad. The way to tell for sure is drive it a little bit like maybe 15 minutes get out and check the heat. If it’s warm or even hot in the center, that’s not due to brakes. The brakes are more of a radiating heat on the outside closer to the tire itself. If you’re getting heat in the middle like around where the center cap is on the wheel or the Lugnuts, this is heat from the bearing. If this is bad, then the wheel bearing is definitely in trouble inside. Most cars today have a sealed unit so you can’t replace the bearings you gotta replace the whole hub

I've been inspecting it every 2,000 miles shaking it back and forth looking for movement in the wheel. There was almost no movement in the wheel until this point. Now there's a good deal of movement back and forth in the wheel and definitely needs to be replaced. Also on top of that the abs warning light just came on and it's been making significantly less noise. It was really noisy not too long ago. So I'm going to be bringing it to a shop within this week after driving more than 31,000 miles since it started making noise

Very glad that it helps you. And you gave me a new idea for a video. Why do bearings go bad on cars more rapidly sometimes. So I will make this video and it will answer the question as to why the bearing went bad so quickly. You know to be honest if the one side is making noise and the other side is nice and there is no play then I don't see any real problem and you just having one side done. Another thing that will help you decide is if you put your car in first gear does it move from a dead stop easily. Basically it should Coast forward very easily if it's a automatic transmission. If it's a manual it should be easy to push by hand and very easy to start in first gear. If the bearings are going bad in the car it will cause resistance in rolling.

Well if you make enough of a stink then it could work. What do I mean you need to hit the right person or you need to have the right exposure to their help Department. This could be something like one of these 5onyourside TV shows or the right newspaper saying how they're ripping people off. Ford would not want that exposure so they would probably take care of it then. If you get a sympathetic ear there at Ford it could work. If you don't get a sympathetic ear you need to force it with force and that would mean you have to start exposing them. I do believe it is worth a try. Send a letter first and then if that doesn't work tell them that you're going to get the Press involved and show them their corruption. If that doesn't work then you really do need to get the Press involved.

I agree however it all depends on how much heat is being generated. Heat means that there is destruction of the bearings inside. I've seen it both ways. I've seen it when you pull them off and there's nothing really happening there's noise but the bearings are still in place and everything's okay. However I've seen it the other way around when you pull the wheel off the whole hub comes off in your hands because the bearing races and the retainers have been destroyed. I've even seen it where it literally falls off the car in a turn but this is rare.

You might need a breaker bar or at least an extension and a pretty hefty socket wrench like a half inch socket drive. 3/4 in might work but if you have a lot of trouble and have to use like a pipe or some sort of extension or maybe an box end wrench over top of the end of your socket wrench to get the leverage. These are all the type of tricks you can use. It may surprise you it may come off make sure that you jack up your car extremely carefully with multiple jacks and jack stands I usually use three. So jack it up and put two jacks and a jack stand. Because you're going to have your head in the wheel well. You need to see behind the hub to get to the bolts. That's why it's very important to jack it up very carefully. I also put a jack stand and jack on the frame or frame support more towards the center of the car and I leave one jack on the outside on that jack point by the wheel. You're going to need a hammer too. But it could surprise you it may come apart pretty easily. Big crowbar or some kind of very large screwdriver could help also. Maybe a jack handle for a bumper jack. Something to get in there to pry. Good luck let me know how it goes

@@renostubbs8504 well I would like to know if it's making a whirring noise or a growling noise like metal against metal being chewed up? And also is it producing a significant amount of heat in the hub in the wheel right in the center? If the answer to these two questions is no then sure you can easily drive it another hour maybe even another month. But if it's grinding or producing heat or God forbid smoking as you drive it and even you can smell it that means it's just about ready to fall off. But if it's just whirring that goes up and down as you go faster and slower then you've got a long time. It's not going to come off and you can see in my video that the bearings and races were still intact but it made a lot of noise as I got to road speed say 40 mph it was definitely whirring.

Check your inside brake pad. You may have that one completely worn out and it's metal to metal contact. The reason you don't see it is because the front brake pad is still okay and so you don't see it grinding up the rotor. But when you take the wheel off and look behind yeah it's actually metal to metal back there. And while you're under there spin The hub and see how it feels if it's stiff it doesn't spin easily the bearings are probably bad it doesn't necessarily have to have play for the bearings to be bad and they will make noise as you roll them at road speed. Make sure when you jack up your car and you're going to put your head underneath there and look at the brake pad and brake rotor that you have multiple jacks and jack stand to hold the car before you put your head underneath there.

well ouch I don't remember ever getting burn very badly working on cars. I've been cut pretty badly. And then usually have to stop and make sure it's bandaged correctly before you continue. @@Al-qy6tc well they still have bearings in the wheels and they still can produce heat. If the bearing is bad there is going to be Heat. This is your sure indication. Yes I know what you mean about the sound it can start to make a whirring sound at say 30 miles an hour and then it will increase as you go faster but there could come a time where the engine of the noise or transmission is kind of mirroring that sound in canceling it. But the Surefire way to tell which bearing is bad and how bad it is is by touching it after you've driven a little bit. Look to see if it's smoking first if it's smoking obviously don't touch it. if it's making a noise it's going to start making Heat

I'm really glad that it helps. If you need any help let me know if there's anything you run into I'm here I will answer questions. If you're going to do it yourself you will probably need some rather larger tools. Okay so probably a quarter inch Drive maybe even a half-inch drive and a big pipe that you can put on the end or a real breaker bar. Some of those nuts that hold things on in the suspension are kind of tough. But if you have the right tools it shouldn't take you too long to replace the hub assembly. All modern cars are hub assembly so you just basically take it off put the other one on.

@QOSQualityofSpeed

yes you are right. The Turning causes a twerking with the bearing and a bearing has an inner and outer bearing and so what's happening is it's probably one of these that usually goes worse than the other so they're two bearings on a hub. And when you turn your putting more pressure on one side of the bearing. Wish then exaggerate the sound. yes it puts more pressure on the opposite wheel when you turn. But it also puts a torquing on the Wheel.

Nice v helpful video. I've had a whirring/droning noise and getting louder in the past few weeks. Problem is I can't tell where it's coming from as it's just in the whole body of the car (Golf). It seemed to be in the front at 1st now sounds like the whole chassis. So loud I can barely hear the radio. It goes away completely turning right but...... wheel bolts are not hot at all. Maybe I need to take it in for an opinion.
@QOSQualityofSpeed
@QOSQualityofSpeed 3 жыл бұрын
Yes if you say it goes away when turning right that is probably the inner bearing of the Hub. I believe on the golf it is a complete hub assembly inner and outer where you can't replace it yourself but yes that makes sense that if you're turning you're stressing one side of the bearing. It's probably your front passenger side. The right side of the car. Oftentimes both front bearings go bad at the same time due to the fact that they're on the car similar length of time so one might be slightly worse than the other but both need replacing. If it's a whirring sound very loudly and you drive it for 10 minutes at 60 miles an hour then pull over one of your wheels should be warmer in the center. That would be the way that you would tell which bearing is worse. I'm glad to help if you have any other questions let me know. It would be very nice if you would post a result and let us know what happened when you replace the bearings or when you do the heat test to find out which one is bad. I'm sure one of your front wheel bearings is in pretty bad shape due to the fact that it changes sound you said when you turn right.

Yes Bob that's definitely that bearing is going bad because when you turn your putting more stress on the inner or outer bearing race. So that's the another indication that that bearing is going bad besides the whirring sound. I'm a little worried because you can actually feel resistance on that side from what you're describing. So let us all know how hot it's getting when you drive for say 15 minutes at 40 miles an hour. If you see smoke this means the bearing is really starting to get close to falling off. But if it's warm to the touch or even hot to the bare hand but not actually smoking in my experience you've got a little bit more time. Not much though. Yes the whirring noise will drive you crazy long before the wheel falls off. I told you the one that I actually drove from a car that I bought as a car dealer was really smoking and you could definitely see that it was really hot, cooking hot, and when I finally got it back to the shop and took the bearing off yes you could see that it was very close to falling off.

that sounds like a CVC joint on the drive shaft or half axle shaft on the rear of your car. It probably has an independent suspension so that they use these constant viscosity joints so that the wheel can continue to move up and down. If the boot is torn or it has worn and water got in there they will start to deteriorate and then when you shift into reverse at our back into drive it will take up the space inside the joint and that's the clunk. Same thing can be happening with your drive shaft universal joints

I have a 2012 Prius, and I'm noticing a slight hum from the driver's side front when I hit around 40mph. It's not super loud, it's not super loud, I almost feel it more than hear it. It's not any louder if I go faster, and it doesn't seem louder when I roll down the window. If I put music on, I can barely tell it's there. But, that wheel, despite having a new tire on it, does need to be topped up more often than the others, and that hum definitely wasn't there a month ago. I'm going to try feeling the hubcaps, see if it's that.
@QOSQualityofSpeed
@QOSQualityofSpeed 5 жыл бұрын
So if you put your fingers on the hubcaps that won't really do any good but if you put your fingers on the Hub basically if you have a hubcap take it off and get your finger on the actual metal of the Wheel. You should be able to clearly feel if there is some heat building up. One of my subscribers. One of my subscribers has said that it's better to use the back of your hand and maybe that's true because you can maybe feel the heat rather than put your finger on it to touch and get burned. I've never tried that technique but maybe it seems reasonable. Let's talk about what else it could be. I have a strong suspicion that you have what I call a titty on the tire basically it is a bubble slightly on the tread part of the tire. This can be caused by bad manufacturing of the rubber or by breaking of the bands or the belts inside the tire. This could easily cause both symptoms that you have reported a slight noise and also having the top the tire up periodically. So my suggestion is look at the tire first. However be very careful when you put your hand around the tire do it slowly because of their is been sticking out it will cut you and it will not be nice.

But I would with your case definitely look to see if you have something going on with that tire because you said you have to add air to that one a lot sounds to me like you could have some Tity and also maybe some screw this in the tire. QUESTION: Would the noise from a bearing starting to go bad become almost like a "harmonic" sound? At some speeds, it completely goes away. And at some speeds, it's loud enough that it has a terrible frequency that hurts my ears, like a "brown note" if you will. When turning slightly at high speeds, it will be louder in one direction than the other, and also at slow speeds while turning I feel a slight vibration coming through the wheel. So does this sound like bearings?
@QOSQualityofSpeed
@QOSQualityofSpeed 3 жыл бұрын
Yes it does sound like it could be a bearing. Bearing noise can go up and down depending on the speed. If it's a very bad bearing you might feel something in the wheel even a little bit not when braking but just when driving normally. If you feel it when braking that's a different issue. That would be your brake disc. I am concerned that if it's bad enough you're feeling of vibration that means the bearing is in pretty bad shape. I suggest please that you do my test that I have shown in the video where you drive for a very short distance park it get out and feel if it's hot. Remember it can be extremely hot and burn you so be careful of that. If it's very hot that I would stop driving that car right away

So I have a 16 Taurus. Kinda sounds like a prop jet right now. The noise is loud, but not unbearable. Noticeable from 30mph and up. Doesn’t really get louder with speed, just faster. One rear brake rotor is getting hotter than the rest by maybe 50-75F. The hat of the rotor isn’t getting hot. The lugs and rim feel the same temp as the rest. Jacked the car up and there’s no play on the rim, no noticeable noises when spinning the tires and they spin pretty free. Both rear sides feel the same. It’s definitely a noise from the rear... So by your thoughts it should be fine to drive another 300mi if it is the bearing? My dad and I have a theory that it could be potentially the rear brakes. I have drilled and slotted. We recently replaced the calipers as they were failing pretty bad. The pads we had were chewed up (the pads that match the rotors). They were a carbon ceramic composite and we replaced them with generic ceramic. So were thinking something could be catching or causing the noise. Either way I wanted to swap the pads back to what they should be. But if the noise doesn’t dissipate we’ll be replacing the hub. The noise started about 2 months ago when I swapped my winters for my all seasons. Thought it was tires so I replaced my tires (they were shot anyway). But the noise persists. The other oddity is the noise actually gets louder when breaking. That’s one thing that led us to maybe the pads. Thoughts?
@QOSQualityofSpeed
@QOSQualityofSpeed 4 жыл бұрын
well the noise getting more from 30 mph up is definitely a sign of bearings. It also could be inner bearings but I think if it's a Taurus it's a front wheel drive car. I think there was a special Taurus that was not only front wheel it was like an all-wheel-drive but I'm not sure about that. If it's a front wheel drive car then it's just the hubs which have the bearings in the rear. You may not feel any noticeable play but the bearing still could be bad if I could hear it I would be able to tell you for sure. The only other thing that it could possibly be is that the rotor is out of round for the brake rotor. And if this is the case it's going to be like a woo woo woo. But if it's a whirring sound and its constant then it's probably the Bearings. Driving in another 300 miles unless you're noticing a tremendous amount of heat I would say would be fine. It don't make a lot of noise before they actually get really hot. If you hear a grinding sound coming from the wheel then this is the bearings literally falling apart and then it's really going to be making some heat I mean like enough you could cook on it. In this case I would not drive anywhere.

After a while of driving up the hill when the wheels are really hot due to constant braking I feel when I brake there is a crack crack sound which goes off when the brake disc cools down. Is it a good idea to change the bearings since they are 16years old or is it a good idea to leave them as it is and check the brake or suspension components.

Hello I think I would jack up the car and spin the wheels and see what you hear. bearings are not going to give you any problem that would make the car run smooth. So what I believe it is it's either the wheels have uneven wear which can happen or you have a titty on a tire this is a bulge on the tire tread. Careful when you feel for this cuz you can cut your hands badly move slowly over the tread really slowly. Suspension parts can also cause a creaking. And I am also concerned and wondering about the condition of your brake pads and Brake discs. If they are worn down this could also cause sound and maybe some rubbing vibration and sound. In short it's not your wheel bearings because they don't affect the driving quality it's a sound that happens. If you want to ask any more questions I'm willing to answer

Absolutely before it actually let's go it's going to make a tremendous amount of noise and even start smoking. You'll smell it. Now if you take a sharp turn and it's already making a lot of noise or driving erratically it could cause it to let go. But if it's just starting to make a whirring sound I don't believe that you're even close to that point. And if you noticed it's starting to get really hot to the touch well then that means it's more damaged. The real test will be to jack up the car and wiggle it to see how much play there is. Anyway you'll be fine driving 80 miles. What I mean is you shouldn't drive for another 6 months. And it has to do with when you noticed the whirring sound happening. The one as I was a car dealer that actually was very close to letting go as I got it back to the dealership lot was starting to smoke and even smell.

Yes it's very good that you posted this so that everyone understand your story. Your local mechanic was exactly correct. There's no alignment because they don't touch any parts that would affect the alignment they just put it right back where it was if they take the entire hub off they just screw the control arms back to exactly the same place. About $150 for a hub and then $150 to labour and you've got your price. And you can drive a car are quite a bit longer but I wouldn't suggest it if it's really growling are getting very hot. But in most cases you can drive it to the Mechanics place.

I'm not sure if that would work but I think it's an interesting idea. I have before had a slight burn on my fingertips by touching a very hot wheel but this one was making a tremendous amount of noise and I'm talking about it actually was smoking when I stopped because I had just purchased the car and I was bringing it back to the shop for repairs and I was just trying to make it the small distance to the shop but the bearing was so bad it's the worst bearing I've ever seen. That the wheel actually got smoking hot and in that case yes when I lightly touch the wheel it burn my fingers. Most of the time you're just going to feel it getting warm. I mean it could be hot but not enough to burn you. But the warmer it is the more you know that that bearing is actually bad. On my Jaguar the front two bearings went bad due to the Terrible Weather we have here in Northern Russia. There's a lot of water and ice and stuff all over the roads and you're driving through water and contaminated water and of course this is going to ruin the bearings in any car because there's a slight leak where the Darren can't be sealed completely due to the rotating of the wheel. Parking your car in water overnight is also an extremely bad thing to do if it's high enough. It will find a way into the bearing and ruin it. I hope all this helps

Though this video is clearly dated, I’m hoping you can respond to this pretty quick. I started having a quiet noise earlier this month and yes, it is a bearing and just today I have replaced my rear brakes, rotors included. but now when I ride, the noise is louder, and I feel, a slight bit of vibration, but not much. Also like you said, I did get out of my SUV and feel the wheel for heat. the wheel overall was a little warm. The Lugnuts were a little bit warmer, but not at all scalding hot and I even touched the outer rim of the brake disc, and it didn’t burn my fingers at all. Given what I have described how long do you think I have for that bearing? my vehicle is a Nissan armada.
@QOSQualityofSpeed
@QOSQualityofSpeed 2 жыл бұрын
It must get very hot before it falls off. I wouldn't drive to another state. I don't like the fact that when you replaced the rotors and brakes this made the noise get worse. It means that one of the sides of the bearing is very bad. I believe that the wheel was slightly cocked to the side the whole time you were driving and then when you replace the brakes and rotor it straightened it up so now it's has one bearing and race probably chewed up a little bit and the other one is more or less intact but this is why it's making more noise now. Still it's going to generate a lot of heat before it really tears something up in there. I would be interested to see how it looks when you take it off if it looks like the one you see in the video where the bearing and races are still intact or it looks like you're starting to lose ball bearings. An answer to your question, any bearing I've ever seen that's actually fell off the car was generating a lot of heat before that happened One came off in my hands as I jack the car up. Another one fell off in the wheel kind of collapsed as I was in a turn. I was a car dealer so I was getting a car back to the shop and that's when these occurrences happened. I was aware that the bearing was in bad shape. But over my lifetime I've seen many bearings go bad in cars but they only fall off after they start generating a lot of heat.

I went to a shop and they told me both are bad, then my mechanic told me he wasn’t sure which side was the bad bearing. I’m going on a 2 hour trip and don’t want to be stranded. It’s definitely making a growling noise when accelerated above 40 mph
@QOSQualityofSpeed
@QOSQualityofSpeed 4 жыл бұрын
Lauren that's exactly how it's supposed to work when you accelerate to above 40 yes you're going to start to hear it more and more. Sometimes if you turn a corner it could be a little more pronounced. Now the question is which side is bad and how bad is it? The answer to this question is how much heat is it putting off. You've got to drive the car for like 15 minutes at a good speed like say above 40 and then immediately jump out and check it but be careful when you're putting your hands on it because it could actually be very hot. You want to touch right around where the lug nuts are on the Wheel. If it is very warm I mean like starting to cook an egg then I would say that you should get it replaced before you go anywhere. But if it's just a little bit warm and it just started to make a the whirring sound then I would say you've got plenty of time. A 2-hour trip shouldn't do anything I'm talking about you could drive it for two more months. When I replaced mine the ones you see in the video I could have left them on there for another two months easy. They were definitely making a lot of noise but it was not two terrible and they were not putting off much heat. When I took them apart you can see in the video that the bearings were completely intact. There was no coming apart of anything. So I would say that if you're not throwing off a lot of heat then you're probably okay. If it does start to get very very hot like cooking an egg then the time is short I mean you could drive the car around the block to a shop or something because at that point it's actually starting to destroy some metal. I hope this long explanation was good enough for you to completely understand. If you have any more questions let me know

QOS Quality of Speed I checked the lug nuts when driving home from work and it was a little warm, but not scolding hot. My mechanic told me about a month ago that I had time, but I’m just going with my gut here and don’t want to be stranded 😂

@@laurenkapellusch2615 well certainly it is good to get the side that is warm replaced. If both sides are warm then yes it's good to replace it but if it's not scorching hot or an actual grinding noise you have time. You can have a bearing that is making noise for a long time months and it will be okay to drive. It's when the center of the rim and the Lugnuts start to get really hot that it is about ready to fall apart. So the short answer is, if you have time take it to the shop get him to stick it on it's going to cost about $300 A side. The parts are about a hundred dollars $150 something like that. But of course they're going to charge you for putting it on. If you don't have time and you just need to take the 2-hour Drive I think you've got no issues

So I have a Escalade it’s RWD, does that mean I have to change the ones in the back? Or do I have to do the front?(Driver side and Passenger side) because I hear most of the noise in the front
@QOSQualityofSpeed
@QOSQualityofSpeed 3 жыл бұрын
You usually can tell front from back. If your hear it coming from the front it is going to be one of the front bearings but it's very difficult to tell from side to side. It's the way that the noise echoes in the car metal. You may also find that both front bearings are somewhat bad. The reason is that they're manufactured the same time and put on at the same time and then the seals usually go bad at the same time it starts to let him a little minut amount of water. This starts to rust the little ball bearings inside and they become not round. In the video you can see that the bearings are still in place so as long as you're not getting extreme amount of heat the car is still okay to drive for a little bit. When the bearing gets really hot then it's dangerous because it could possibly come off but pay attention to how much heat it is generating when you get out of the car after driving. Also if the sound changes that's a concern and means it's getting worse. Yes the answer to your question is yes you do have bearings in the back you also have bearings on each side of your differential as well so there's a total of 5 bearings back there. You have to in the wheels and three in the differential. I'm not sure on that truck but you could have a center bearing call the carrier bearing that also helps hold up the driveshaft. I have seen one of those go bad before and had to replace it. But if you're hearing are coming from the front of your car it's probably one of your front hub bearings. Do the heat test let us know how hot it's getting.

Hello I would like to tell you my story and get your opinion if you don't mind my Windstar van wouldn't start only time in it's life got it towed to ford ,first mistake,it was a vacuum hose,simple fix,then I am informed my breaks are about done ,I knew that while it was there more expensive but do it ,rather have to go some place else ,then the steering had worn components,it was 10 years since front was done so I said sure,it was a great dependable vehicle , comfortable safe etc.so I would spend some money on it ,have owned it since new ,they completely destroyed my van replaced front bearings a month later one went bad again they fixed it then a month went by it went bad again each time it took days to get back in leaving me without a vehicle in the suburbs unable to get around unable to get around and go to work , I have a paraplegic brother and handicapped son ,that I drive for ,no loaner no shuttle then they tell me the nuckle is bad never had a problem before ,I think they did it ,telling me the whole time it's a old van hard to find parts for ,I found one no thanks to them they couldn't care less had to be used ,so I let them repair it my mistake again it lasted 12 days cost me another 800 dollars better bearing knuckle spindle hub and labor .Now it gets good driving down the highway I hear a thumping thought I had a flat it pulled me towards traffic I pulled over no flat nursed it home it took 11 days to get back in without a vehicle or loaner they wouldn't pay for tow truck or 120 dollars in taxis going back and forth to the dealership ,they snapped off 2 studs over tightening obviously ,they said they had to fight to get it under warranty but I had to pay for half of the labor .Another 100 dollars.when called on bearing warranty they said they go by the first bearing bullshit .Then I get my van back and there is still a bearing noise and now they screwed up the front end again .Going to write them a nasty letter contact Ford better business and a good lawyer ,I have had it they cost me thousands my holidays inconvenience and everything else assholes and they don't care.

I'm so sorry that happened to you. Obviously they've got some young kid working in there that doesn't know anyting. Some of the time that they say they replace the parts they probably didn't replace them. You may be able to make a bearing temporarily be quiet by simply squirting some oil in there and then giving you the truck back and charging you money. In this case it would do what you said it would work for a little while then go bad. Another possibility is that they are using very inferior Chinese knockoff parts that do go bad very rapidly. You need a friend that will tell you if something is really bad on the car. If I was there I would look at the car and tell you briefly if a part really needed to be replaced or not. Did the front-end seem to be tighter after they put in all the new parts on there? This is a prime example not to go to a dealership and why Scotty Kilmer has such a good business, he is honest. Before you have any further work done to your truck please write me here and asked me about the job you are going to have them do for you. I will give you my best honest opinion as to whether or not I believe that they are telling you the truth.

Good watch. Question tho, some say that if you have a bad bearing it sounds a lot worse if you turn it left or right. Now, i hear whirring sound when i’m about 50-60mph and if i steer left or right, the sound doesn’t get any worse. But there is a whirring sound for sure. Could this be still a bad bearing?
@QOSQualityofSpeed
@QOSQualityofSpeed 4 жыл бұрын
MasterHepburns yes it's absolutely bad bearings if you have a whirring sound. The reason why they talk about it getting worse if you turn right or left is because they're talking about the old style of bearing where the wheel was held on with A big nut and this can be loose and the bearings could be worn down and be smaller so that there was play in the wheel and when you turn right or left the wheel would actually lean a little bit very slightly. This happened when the bearings were worn. On modern cars it is all one piece as you see on my Jaguar in this video. So if your car is a modern car it shouldn't make much difference if you turn right or left but the worrying sound is the bearings starting to become a little bit not round. And maybe there is some rust or other contaminated grease inside the bearings which is making the sound. If you look at this video you can see into the bearing and you can hear when I roll it just a very slight scrape. On modern cars there is no way that I could really lean right or left unless it gets extremely bad by that time it would start to really smoke and be extremely hot even maybe smell a little bit because the bearings are just about to fall off. Before any bearing is really terrible it's going to produce a hell of a lot of heat before it falls off. Hope this helps

QOS Quality of Speed wow that helps me a lot! Thank you so much for the long and very informative reply! This helped a lot. I’m actually torn if what could be the real issue about the noise on my car and yes you are correct, my car is a honda fit 2014 that answers on why i don’t get a highpitched whirring noise when i steer. Now all i need to do now is to locate which wheel has the bad bearing and i will definitely try the test you just did on this video. Thank you and please make a lot more informative videos like this. MasterHepburns i'm so glad to help. I have a couple more videos on the channel that may be of interest. Differential how to tell when it is bad. Also buying a used car what to check. And I've got one that I really like))which is how to self rescue when you run out of Gas. Believe it or not your car will run fine on isopropyl alcohol for 2 miles or so for you to get to the gas station. It even cleans out the injectors and fuel lines. But I wouldn't drive it on isopropyl for very long because it runs a little hotter than gasoline. One more really interesting thing alcohol is it's very safe to carry in your car or in your trunk. It's not like gasoline in a bottle which is not safe at all. So throw a bottle in your car and you're safe if you're out of gas.))

@QOSQualityofSpeed
@QOSQualityofSpeed 3 ай бұрын
If it's wiggling when you jack it up the car really can't be driven far at all I mean you might be able to move it around the parking lot but you can't get on the road well I have done this and it started to smoke and almost fell off the car. So definitely not recommended if you had to move it around the parking lot or maybe from one street to another to work on it then okay but other than that I think you're pretty much at the end of any driving of that car

Hi. I drive a 2002 Elantra and have noticed a “thump, thump, thump” noise from the drivers side rear wheel. I don’t hear a grinding noise. A friend of mine who knows a lot more about cars than I do is pretty sure it’s a bad wheel bearing. There is no vibration. I am going to try the heat test. I don’t know how long this problem has existed as I drive with the windows open and radio on. I easily hear the sound with the windows closed and the radio off. It sounds like a helicopter. I drive round trip 24 miles a day. About 25 minutes each way. There is some stop and go traffic, plus stretches where the speed limit is 55 mph. I plan on getting a new car in about a month or two. Will I be OK until then or is it too risky? Aside from the noise, there is nothing else noticeable. The car drives fine. Thank you very much.

hi I will be glad to try to help. My first thought is that it could be a bulge on your tire. We used to call this a titty on the tire. It will make it sound very much like a helicopter. So what's happened is some of the metal belts inside the tire have broken and this is caused a bulge on one part of the tread. So it's getting on an even sound as it rolls whaaa whaaa whaa kind of thing. aside from this there's not much that will give an uneven sound. If it was a wheel bearing it is a constant whirring sound not and intermittent. A wheel bearing sounds very much like you would take a metal plate and put it on top of a cone and you would spin it. there's one more possibility a severely warped rotor. if your rotor on that wheel is very out of plane it could grab and let go grab and let go grab and let go and this could maybe make that sound. However it probably wouldn't be very loud. So my best guess is that it would be a titty on your tire. It's a bulge on the tread. Put a glove on and run your hand around the tread of the tire. I say put a glove on because it could be metal fibers sticking out I've been cut more than once this way. If you feel that it's very uneven in one spot then that's definitely the problem. Last thing yes this does need to be dealt with right away because the tire can blow out on you

My 2013 Chrysler 300 makes a humming sound when I get to 50mph. Is that a sign of bad wheel bearing?
@QOSQualityofSpeed
@QOSQualityofSpeed 3 жыл бұрын
Yes more than likely yes. It is possible that it could be transmission but if you're hearing it towards a wheel front or back not directly under your feet it's probably the bearing in the wheel. Chrysler 300 I believe has a drive shaft am I correct so it's a rear wheel drive car. Nice car by the way. Did the whirring noise just start suddenly one day? Yes that sounds like a bearing due to the fact that the faster you go the louder it gets so if you hear it at 50 miles an hour that really does sound like a wheel bearing. It's not a big deal to change them but as long as it's not producing a lot of heat it's not going to let go anytime in the near future. I changed mine you see here in this video but as you can see they were in fine shape they were not going to come apart. But I probably could have gotten another six months out of driving them but you know if the noises bothering you or they're producing a lot of heat then it's a good idea to change. If you drive the car along way to work and back each on highway speeds then I would definitely get it changed sooner rather than later maybe in a week or so. It is possible for you to do the job yourself if you have tools make sure you Jack the car up and supported well with maybe three different jacks or a jack stand and a jack also

My Avalanche is having a bearing issue. Its progressively got louder and louder but now its at a steady sound and makes a thump every wheelspin. How long should I be able to go without replacing it? Jw bc I need to get back and forth to work and home and I have a appointment to replace it in 2 weeks
@QOSQualityofSpeed
@QOSQualityofSpeed 4 жыл бұрын
The one concerning thing is that it's making a thump everywhere Revolution. The sounds like it has lost a ball bearing which is the little spherical piece of metal. If it's lost one of those then it's going to come apart very soon I would not drive the car at all. There may be some other reason is making a thumb like something to do with your tire likely. Check your tire this way... Take a glove and put it on your hand and then go around the tread of your tire with your palm and feel if it's uniform all the way around the tire. If you feel a large hump in part of the tire this is called a titty in the tire and it is the reason for the Thump Thump Thump. This tire also must be replaced very rapidly I'm talking about you could drive it to the garage or gas station to get them to stick on a new tire right now. But I would not drive any further than down to the end of the block or something like this. The titty in the tire is caused by breaking of the metal bands inside of the tire and then the tire bulges out there. Back to your bearing if you're bearing is the source of the thumb then I am very concerned about driving the car at all. Another thing you could do is to jack up the wheel of the car and rotated and see what's going on see what it sounds like. Then at this point you will understand if the bearing is in severely bad shape. If it's grinding or clicking really loudly then yeah that's the source of the thump. You can also wiggle the wheel back and forth when you have the weight off of it because you've jacked it up and see how much play there is. If it's a lot of play do not drive the car. If it's relatively tight but still making whirring noises but not producing very much heat when you driven for 15 minutes you probably have some time. This also would mean that you found another reason for the thump, maybe your tire. I really hope this helps let me know if you have any more questions

My car starts making a humming sound at around 40-45mph but it seems to be less noisy when I go faster. Can it still be a bad wheel bearing? I will definitely try checking the temperature of the wheels as you suggest. I took my car to Firestone to ask if they can tell me what is causing the sound. They told me the wheels are tight and tires wearing fine. They said I had a hole in my exhaust manifold and that could be the cause. I did have a hole there but I don't think that was what was causing the noise.
@QOSQualityofSpeed
@QOSQualityofSpeed 3 жыл бұрын
Well let's look at this. The bearing noise should get worse after a certain speed likes a 40 miles per hour and then you'll hear it and then it should increase the faster you go honestly. There could be some weird thing going on with sound resonance they can cause it to sound stronger at a certain speed. I've definitely experienced that. But if there is a small hole in the exhaust anywhere yes it can be even a droning sound it can drone on and on and even vibrate around inside the car. It doesn't have to be a big hole a small hole in the exhaust will make a hum sound

I have a question is it the bearing if the noise sound like a bad tire but the tires are good?I also feel a little vibration it started about 5 days ago but i won't be able to get it fixed for another 2 weeks do you think it will fall off?
@QOSQualityofSpeed
@QOSQualityofSpeed 5 жыл бұрын
bearings don't give vibration. I think it's likely that your tire has a broken steel belt inside. This creates it to be like a bulge on the tread of the tire or it could even be on the side wall of the tire. This can create a vibration and even a sound. If this is the case yes the tire can blow out and I would be very careful about driving it very far. Take your hand get a glove and gently go around the tread of the tire and see if you feel something uneven. Bearings sound like you take a steel plate and you put it on a steel cone and you spin it it's a whirring sound without any vibration and the sound gets more as you go faster. I hope this helps

If it's really loud I think that would be worrying to drive it very far. Check to make sure that you have oil in there because actually the oil can drain out over time and you may get more time out of it just by adding oil. If it's grinding though I think I wouldn't drive it anywhere
