It's not genius. Everyone is doing it. The guarantee option goes up progressively so the later years of the contract are a much larger hit. It's effectively kicking the can down the road. His cap hit goes up as follows: 21.8 million, 31.8 & finally 41.8. They will either renegotiate and start over at some point or take their hit and move on.

I still don’t see it with Caleb. He’s had 3 good games all year. He’s overrated. He’s lucky with a lot of his throws. I don’t know today the Bears have a superstar QB. This isn’t the Pac12 or Big 12. More he’s a Baker Mayfield. Nothing at all wrong with that, he will be good he’s just not generational, he’s not a Mahomes and at his best he’s maybe the 16th best QB in the league. Put a good team around him, a great defense, and ask him to not have to carry the team like the Browns did early with Baker. I think I’d still rather Mayfield than Caleb at this point. I just think he bought into his own hype and not every great college QB is a great NFL QB.
