Usually when teams do this, they have someone back already, the fact the Bears had someone run back to catch the ball, he caught the ball and then ran it in for a TD takes it to a whole other level.

The Bears had a receiver back pretending like he was going to catch the ball on the other side of the field from where the ball was actually going. The Packers were all running to him. You can see him at the five yard line at 01:27 .
@jfh102118 күн бұрын
@@kennethturner8290 Yes, but teams running this fake usually start with two guys deep-one pretends to catch the ball, while the other one actually catches it. In this play, the Bears only had one guy deep, and he was the fake-catcher that you pointed out. The guy who does catch it didn’t start deep; he started ON THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGE before running backwards, fielding the punt, turning around, and running the other way for a touchdown!

I believe this is the fourth time this play has been used in the NFL (although there's always the possibility that there are more occasions that I'm not aware of). The first time was by the Bears, against the Packers. That play was called back due to a holding. The second time was the Jeff Fisher-era Rams using it to score a touchdown against the Seahawks. The third time was the Seahawks trying it against the Bears, resulting in a return to the two.

Isn’t that technically a Gadget Punt Return Play instead of a Fake Punt? A fake punt is executed by the kicking team. Since the Bears were the receiving team they are enacting what a coach would call a gadget play on a punt return. A gadget play is one that uses some form of trickery to confuse the opposition in an effort to create greater opportunity. The Flea Flicker, Fumblerooski and the Hook and Lateral are gadget plays that have specific names which they got from being well known and executed in a specific manner.
