They are hilarious, something about them makes them almost comical. They are such characters and they are tenacious and clever. I would not want anyone to be hurt by them or their house trashed by them. They just do have a lot of character to them. 😊

Theres no sound to this video. If you watch on a full larger screen, take a look at around the 5:54 mark. That storm door hits her face and she gets mad. she slams the door back and watch her mouth. They make a popping/clicking sound but you can clearly see the mouth movements. If you see this it means the bear is highly agitated.

Haha! That's funny. My Wife and kids were in the cabin during this. Really glad the front door was secured. I think she would have gotten in had she not been forced to try to keep the screen door open. A 400 Lb. Bear can exert 800 lbs. of force. Thankfully, this behavior is very odd, and is not typically what occurs.

I'm not sure what caused this particular behavior of trying to open a cabin door. The kitchen and food is within 10' of the door though. Even at that, It is highly unusual. Bears in the area have learned to open unlocked car doors. They manipulate and open unsecured or insufficiently secured garbage cages around the area. They sometimes will raid a cooler left unattended. We believe this mama and cubs were captured and relocated by the TWRA within 3-4 months of this video being posted. During those 3-4 months, around 15 bears were captured in the Chalet Village neighborhood. Nearly all were relocated. We advocate for these bears and educate our guests about bear behavior. We provide written information and require a verbal conversation to specifically discuss bears prior to check-in. Thank you again!
@williamogilvie6909
@williamogilvie6909 Жыл бұрын
@@highhavencabin People in bear country need to secure any food sources that could attract bears. That means locking garbage cans inside secure sheds, no pet food or water dishes outside, and no food left inside cars, which should always be locked. When a bear shows up you should scare the beJesus out of it, sending it hi-tailing back into the bush where it belongs. Always keep your distance from bears, and don't follow them. If you trigger the flight instinct of a bear asap, you won't have to deal with the fight instinct.

Terry, Thank you so much for your really good advice. I have been thinking about it for a few days. High Haven Cabin is a rental cabin located in Gatlinburg Tennessee. Although the idea is brilliant, I just don’t think it’s applicable to our circumstance. I will tell you that the TWRA has relocated or euthanized many of the bears in our area. The last count I received was 17 bears, 3 euthanized and 14 relocated. We are very active with the BearWise initiative. Our guests are simply the very best. They are responsible, aware, and are not part of the conflict between bears, humans, and food. Thank you so very much for your very considerate advice. We really appreciate that!!

Hi JT! I love that idea, but this is a rental cabin in Gatlinburg, TN. It would be hard to have a loud audible siren that could discern between human and bear. We have not had this specific issue since this video was posted, so I’d say this is a rarity. I would go as far as saying this behavior is what I would expect however. I’m surprised that there are low incidences of bears trying to gain access into cabins. Sometimes in fact it’s not human food they are after. Formaldehyde is found in many building materials such as insulation. Formaldehyde when it breaks down chemically releases formic acid. Formic acid is off gassed by ant colonies. Black bears find ants by smelling the formic acid they release. More often than not bears in our area will target hot tub covers and sometimes try to access crawl spaces where insulation is present. They are convinced there are millions of ants, when in fact it’s formaldehyde/formic acid VOC’s. Could also just be the amazing Donut Friar Donuts in the cabin. Can’t blame them either way. Thanks for commenting!!

The fellow telling you not to be nervous is not quite correct. A black bear has 1000psi biting force. Claws razor sharp. Outrun Usain Bolt easily. Consider this...a german shepherd can kill a big man quickly and has no claws and 300 psi biting force and weighs 70lbs. The big bear in this video weighs 200lbs and is also being not natural for bears and showing some aggression. Always take precautions around bears.

Bring something that sprays bullets and forget about bear spray. You probably won’t need it but if you do, you need it in a hurry! We have the densest population of black bears in the USA here. They have closed parts of the Appalachian Trail Campgrounds due to aggressive bears. They often relocate problem bears. But they don’t tell you where they were relocated. I suspect the aggressive bears are some of the relocated bears. Bears here are way too comfortable around humans! Just use common sense and you should be fine! Enjoy your stay!

Our bears don’t do a deep hibernation in the winter. Our winters are mild. They will stir, and look for food all through the winter. The vacation cabins are a favorite spot. Tourists leave food in open cars, or on the cabin decks. The bears can open car door, they can open sliding doors on a van, and they can climb vertically very quickly. If they smell food……they’ll go there.

Hey Nichole. You would not be the first to bring a firearm. You will not be the last. I would only say that firing warning shots is illegal, if that were to happen. You absolutely have the right to defend yourself in that manner if attacked and under direct bodily threat. Any altercation involving a firearm will most definitely result in a multiple Agency investigation, no matter the outcome of the encounter. If you want to move them away, a strobing flashlight is pretty effective, as is bear spray. My wife and kids happened to be in the cabin during this footage while I was out getting the side window of our car door replaced in Knoxville. They were a bit freaked out to say the least. And to think we used to keep the entry door open with the screen door shut. Not anymore! Thank you for commenting!

@@highhavencabinand therein lies the problem. Ever notice that they keep statistics on nearly every type of animal attacks EXCEPT BEAR ATTACKS! They don’t want to tarnish the reputation of the park and scare off tourists. Not to mention the North Carolina portion. I’ve seen idiot parents in Cades Cove actually tell their kids to go stand next to Mr fuzzy pants! I thought I was going to have to shoot a bear once. The parents told the kids just that. The bears head was behind a big oak tree and didn’t see the kids approach. She turned, saw the kids and swatted at them. I yelled and charged toward the bear and the kids jumped back. If she would have attacked I wouldn’t have had a choice. The bear went hurriedly on it’s way. But the parents left with one more orifice than they arrived with, because I tore them a new one! Some of these nature channels and Disney like to give animals human traits. Nothing could be further from the truth! Two really stick out in my mind, Meerkat Manor and the one with the orangutans. Orangutan Island? They liked to create social interactions amongst the animals. But parents should know better! The Smokies are my home and I have hunted elk out West in grizzly territory. I have had a couple of run ins with both black and grizzly bears. Never had to shoot one, and I hope I’m never placed in that situation.

Have you ever seen an attack of a bear ? It's terrible the way they kill a human . There are a lot of videos showing their attacks and what happens with the body of the person . They're not pets and they are horrible creatures to humans .

Hi Elizabeth. Thanks for commenting. Black Bears are not the savage killers you think they are. The Polar Bears and Brown Bears are. Since 1900, 61 people have died as a result of a predatory attack by a black bear. I'll rephrase. 61 people have been killed by black bears in 123 years of known history. As a human, you are under way more threat from other humans, than you will ever be from black bears. Our black bears are exactly the species of bear you want around to awe, at and admire at distance. I'm sure you know the saying "don't get between a mama bear and it's cub". A mama black bear WILL NOT defend it's cubs from danger. The black bear's defense is climbing trees and will do so under threat of human. Don't take my word for all of this. Visit the North American Bear Society. There's a drop down for bears where you can learn more about the black bear specifically. The video dates to the beginning of the pandemic. There's a reason this bear is acting the way she is in the video, and it's not typical behavior for them to try entering a cabin.
