The only thing I remember about this game was a strategy guide that confirmed Megatron’s game ending pointed out the one MASSIVE flaw with his attempt to change history. He changes it, but the Matrix is lost, so the Cons are utterly boned when Unicron arrives in 2005.
@bushybeardedbear Жыл бұрын
Huh. Even had he kept the Matrix, he still would have been boned because nobody to open it... But you'd think with millions of years of prep time, they'd have eventually found a way to stop Unicron... Remembering this Unicron was just, some big robot built by some alien. He wasn't a facet of a dark gods pan universal omni-consciousness.
@thunderstudent Жыл бұрын
@@bushybeardedbear That too was retconned into him being a facet of a dark gods pan universal omni-consciousness since Primus was introduced as a concept in the comics first, then referenced in Beast Machines... yeah. The cartoon sort of addresses that. Megatron himself says that he was unwilling to through with such a risky plan at first, but by that point in the Beast Wars, he was borderline insane with ambition and completely out of options. One of the guys who worked at GenAzea apparently said that this was done without their knowledge, and very late in development; he didn't even find out until after he bought a used cart post-release. He blamed Nintendo, but I've no idea why Nintendo would be meddling in the game design decisions of specifically the English version of a game they didn't work on and was based on a Hasbro/Takara IP.
@CRISHTANG Жыл бұрын
@@LonelySpaceDetective Late to this party but - yes, that would be me. I couldn't believe it myself when I heard the explanation from our producer when he got back to me after I informed him about what I found. He said that "Super Mario Club", a department in Nintendo that was assigned to approving the game for publishing would not allow the game to be released because the characters "looked bad" when they were zoomed back. It was unclear whether Nintendo themselves did the modification or if they had Locomotive do it, but it was without the knowledge, approval or consent of Genazea or Bam and they had no business interfering with a mechanic like that which affected gameplay. I wrote an extensive section in the manual that explained the rock-paper-scissors mechanic of the 3 modes, when at the various distances made for an amazingly strategic gameplay dynamic - which was now completely ruined by this change. I still have the prototype of what should have been final gold master - English with zoom gameplay intact. I guess this works out for me personally since its now worth a fortune, but having a game needlessly ruined like that is among the most sour experiences I've ever had as a developer or fan of gaming, and I've been through some pretty bad stuff as Mr. McMuscles surely knows. :/

@@CRISHTANG Haha, no harm no foul about being late; considering I'm days late myself since YT didn't tell me someone responded. Wasn't expecting to get a response from you. Such a weird situation, like the Japanese version with its supposed "characters looking bad when camera's zoomed out" issue apparently passed Nintendo's tests before, and off the top of my head I'm not aware of any similar stories of Nintendo meddling in that way with games they had no invested interest in or involvement (not that this didn't happen to other games, I just can't think of any). The closest comparison I can come up with is how Sony Computer Entertainment's evaluation team made a bunch of experimental demands for 5000ft, Inc's PS2 Daredevil game (such adding a mechanic where Daredevil could grind on ledges with his baton; Tony Hawk-style) which often went against Marvel's wishes for the game, and ultimately led to Marvel pulling the license and the game getting cancelled.

So, a couple "Transformer Nerd Lore Facts": -Windrazor is a repaint of Silverbolt who was released at Botcon, the official Transformers convention, a year prior. His inclusion is quite surprising since it was the first time a character from Botcon fiction appeared in a piece of mainline Transformers media. -All initial playable characters in the PS1 version have their proper voice actors, save for Quickstrike, who is played (quite well) by Cheetor's VA. -As someone else pointed out, having Energon Radiation in the N64 version is bizarre since at that point in the story, the Transmetal forms could resist it, and all unstable Energon on the planet had been destroyed or stabilized. -The game was originally made for Japan, which is very clear when you look at the lip syncing. This is also why Rattrap is so small compared to his design in the show, and why he's so... animated. Rattrap is a VERY different character in the Japanese dub and let's... not go into that. This is also evident upon looking at the toy gallery, which omits many figures from the Hasbro toyline, and features the Japanese-exclusive Ravage figure. If you want to play a REALLY weird/bad Beast Wars games, I'd recommend the PS1 game titles simply "Beast Wars Transformers". It's a trip.

He was a character from 1999's BotCon exclusive fiction/toys, i.e. you had to pay big bucks to go to a con to experience it, or get it on the secondary collector's market. As such, this game was much more accessible. Though, I do gotta wonder how that shook out behind the scenes in terms of planning/development, since presumably a reasonable part of the gamedev and convention prep would've been going on parallel. (And if they were pulling BotCon guys for palette swap characters, why not Packrat, Fractyl, and Shokaract for Rattrap, Terrorsaur, and Rampage?)

I kind of like how attacks are handled with proximity with the other player, that way one player cannot spam projectiles at close range, I also get a good laugh that, when you KO the other player, you still have control over your character, and so when it shows which player won the round, we just spun around in circles, those were the days. I tried the Nintendo (Ultra) 64 version of the game back when I first tried out emulation, but it just never clicked with me the same way the PlayStation version did. By the way, before Beast Wars Transmetals, there was a previous Beast Wars game on the PlayStation that wasn't a fighting game, I think it's one of those "tank control" kind of games.

I'm playing Street Fighter 6 right now, MK1 just debuted gameplay, and yet the most exciting thing to happen to fighting games this week is Matt McMuscles dropping a new 'Worst Fighting Game' video. And Beast Wars is in the crosshairs this time!? What a time to be alive!

May I suggest 1996's "Timeslaughter" for MS-DOS? It's readily available on a lot of abandonware/DOS games sites, and it's pretty godawful.

I actually have the physical versions of both games. I got the n64 one when Blockbuster was selling them off.

8:21 - gladly, Silverbolt was delightfully campy. Also, I'm surprised that Rhinox and Inferno's Transmetal versions weren't considered for the game, seeing as they included Waspinator and Airazor' toy-exclusive forms* *Terrorsaur was shown changing into a Transmetal form when he died, and Scavenger was planned as Inferno before someone realized that the Inferno figure was a peg-warmer.

Even as a transformers and beast wars fan. Finding a way of translating transformation to a fighting game seems really hard to do

Did waspinator even have a transmetal form? Didn't Terrorsaur die before becoming one? Questions questions.
@MattMcMuscles Жыл бұрын
I don't think they did? Maybe that's the reason why their transmetal forms in this game look so ugly.

BW Windrazor was a Botcon 1999 exclusive toy first, which made his inclusion in the PS1 a pretty insane deep cut at the time. From what I recall from the Botcon 1999 panel introducing the game, 3H, the guys who were organizing Botcon back in those days, actually collaborated directly with Genazea (or one of the other companies?) and managed to get him included... ... but my memories aren't 100%. I'm tryin' ta remember... there were an awful lot of casualties that day...

I rented this once just because I was surprised to find an N64 transformers game. Once I got over my disappointment, I found that if you get a flying character, all you have to do is fly around the ring launching missiles and whoever you’re fighting won’t even be able to catch up to hit you. I think you had to keep decent timing in it, but it was super easy to do.

Oh wow, I always completely forget these games exist. Like, my brain goes "Mystery of Convoy, BW shooter, G1 action game (that I don't think left Japan), Armada game, Movie tie-ins, WFC, FOC, Prime, Devastation, Cyberverse"

A little fun fact- in the Japanese version of the N64 game you can unlock extras by using the transfer pak to connect it with GBC Beast Wars game Takara published, which is more or less plays like the Dead Heat Fighters series they published for Gameboy.

I was going to recommend Forged to Fight as a solution, and while it is good, Bloody Roar _makes so much more sense_ for a Beast Wars fighting game template. Great Stuff, as always!
