If anything, the use of "Goth" for that subculture is pretty strange. The term likely comes from "Gothic literature", stemming from a time when "Gothic" referred to Germany, as many of the earliest forms of Gothic literature were inspired by the foreboding architecture and landscapes of Central Europe. Etymologically, though, you'd probably have a more accurate name for the subculture if you called them "Vics", since a sizeable chunk of the literature came from British writers of the 19th century, like Brahm Stoker, Robert Lewis Stevenson, Marry Shelly and so on, and many of the fashion choices of Goths are at least in part inspired by Victorian fashion trends, like the corset. Also explains why there's often an overlap with Steampunk.

Hot take: the Jaguar having a number pad is, in theory, a great idea. The end result should be a lot like how a keyboard works as a game controller: you have a few keys (the face buttons) that are easy to hit, and a huge number of keys (the number pad) that are less convenient, but can be used for rarely-used functions or stuff that you won't need in the heat of combat. The problem is that they attached it to a controller that is lacking in face buttons and has no shoulder buttons, so the number pad gets pressed into service as a main input, where it's super awkward.

The keypad was used mainly for secondary game functions such as different camera views or going to a secondary screen such as a map. Supposedly, if devs would have used the Tom and Jerry chips like they were supposed to, games would have been a bit more on par with something like the 3D0. Almost. 2D sprite based games would have been a lot more enjoyable at the least.

Kasumi was planned as a MK rip off from the start, the first playable beta versions are not much different from the final version. There are worse fighting games, e. g. Given the low budgets, most Jaguar games are actually quite some achievements.

At least I can appreciate that someone writing that massive missive of background info thought of a reason that the island hasn't been found. Most things just gloss over it.

Just a silly sidenote - the OG Mortal Kombat SNES manual only listed a single move per character, with a blank line or two for you to write the other one in yourself. I didn't realize this fact was buried under all the junk in my head =D

@@THANATOS-PRIME To be fair it was more than a few tribes and a couple of times. It was an established battle tradition. It's seen all over pre-colonial sites... Crow Creek Massacre for example where 90% of the 486 bodies unearthed showed evidence of scalping on their skulls. That being said I realize it wasn't all tribes. This isn't something that only natives did either, Scythian warriors scalped their foes and hung them their horses as battle trophies- there's also evidence of scalping and cannibalism that has been discovered from stone age Europe. It's nothing to really get upset about, humans are violent, and war trophies were/are a common tradition to many cultures... Not just native American ones.

The character select screen reminds me of the party select part of the Dungeon Master game that was on the Atari ST and was ported to the SNES. You went around and selected your characters from portraits hanging on the walls.

I was struggling to remember the game when you were saying how it was one of the most infamous of the Jaguar's library, and then a clip of the scotsman showed up and I immediately remembered that it's that under-kilt-fireball game.

Man, that was a time. Between the Jaguar and the 3DO, we had some of the most god-awful fighting game experiences that could be imagined. It was like those two systems were competing with other for who could make the worst MK ripoff. Honestly, Way of the Warrior, as bad as it was, was a masterpiece compared to Shadow on the 3DO. And as far as the 'worst' Jaguar fighter, I'd say the original release of the VF ripoff Fight for Life.

@Chedmond I've never heard of those 2 terrible games but fight for life's storyline sounds like a rip off of eternal champions on the megadrive

As someone who played this game EXTENSIVELY as a kid, the special moves are similar to the original Primal Rage combos (if you can relate to that). You hold the 'C' button and then input commands. For example, Habaki's finisher is to hold 'C' and press Left, Up in melee range. This was sort-of done on purpose. As opposed to games like Mortal Kombat where if you saw Scorpion take two quick steps back you knew he was going to throw a spear. By holding the button down you're 'masking' the special move... dumb reason and horrifically executed but there ya go.

14:18 = there's the Loch Ness Monster (or I guess the "Loch Katrine Monster") swimming in the background. That's the stuff you'll notice when you don't want to look at the game.

The blood stays on the ground, I'll give it that! Edit: since you noticed it as well, here's my input. I noticed a QBasic game that also did lingering blood and I noticed that it left so much blood everywhere that pretty soon, that game became painted red so much you couldn't even see new blood effects. So when I went to do persistent blood mechanics in my own fighting implementation I made sure to use randomized blood shades so new blood could be seen over existing blood. In this game not enough blood is left on the ground to completely paint everything red, so new blood still stands out for the entire match, which is pretty cool honestly.

I bought this game on its release. I even have the headband that came with it. I bought a Jaguar in the early days, during the 1993 early trial market before the nationwide launch. I was so desperate for anything for my Jag that I still played through anything I had. I finished the game several times. It might have been the first fighting game I'd ever owned, so I wasn't comparing it to anything else, and I thought it was okay. I noticed you not mentioning Double Dragon V for the Jag. Yeesh, I've played through Ultra Vortek and Fight For Life several times but even I won't put any effort into Double Dragon V.

My best friend in high school and I used to have so much fun with bad fighting games... we played a LOT more of this than I care to admit (fun fact, in Angus's stage, if you watch the little silhouette boat in the background long enough, it gets eaten by a loch ness monster, lol!). We also played a ton of Way of the Warrior on 3DO, that one's actually fun to be honest... and we both swear when Nikki Chan throws her hair she's saying "Juan Valdez".

Matt, I swear, as soon as I remember the PS1 3D fighting game in which you could KO the opponent, then fall off the ring and the game would count it as a loss for you too (computing a +1 for you, +1 for the opponent), I will tell you and you will end your search for the worst fighting game. The game even had a "YOU WIN" message on the screen, upon falling off the ring after the KO in your favor it would change to "YOU WIN?". It was worse than Fighter Maker and I played both of them at the time. But I can't remember its name nor find any info about it online.
