Honestly the first version makes me think that they may not have been close at all. Tem refers to him and Riz as just classmates. He doesn’t tell him, “You wouldn’t eat a friend.” He says, “You wouldn’t eat a classmate.” Which seems more distant. There was that line in Tem's diary about being confided in by a predator, so maybe that initial conversation on the bench really did happen? The speech couldn't have really happened, and judging from how Riz calls Tem his best friend when Tem only calls him a classmate, it's not a far stretch to say that Riz is having delusions about the experience as a whole.

It really hurts seeing Riz in this. Although Tem was the ultimate victim, in a way Riz was a victim to his own mind, society's perception of carnivores and how isolating that can end up being, and then the medication. Going off any medication can be incredibly dangerous, but especially a medication that causes so much issues. We see in the bed scene that Riz struggles with the aggression even in his sleep so...can't say something like this wasn't bound to happen. I dunno, I struggle with BPD and a lot of paranoid delusions so on some level, I can empathize with Riz. I feel this whole thing shows a much larger issue with the whole way it works in Beastars and how little support for carnivores there ends up being, especially since it seems (I could be wrong) that it isn't a well known fact that large carnivores who grow too big, like bears, end up needing that medication. Bears are one of the most ferocious carnivores out there tbh. THis whole situation just has me sad. Cause Tem was trying to be nice to Riz, just being a good person and that ended up leading to his death. But Riz was clearly struggling with a lot of issues outside of Tem, especially the way he ended up romanticizing it due to guilt and how he was so desperate to be seen for who he was, that he didn't even really know since he thought going off his meds was the "true him," and so desperate for a friend that it led to the devouring and ended up messing up his entire life too. There's no justification for murder, just explanations. I am not trying to justify Riz killing Tem at all. Still, to me it shows almost a lack of true education about such things and I would not be surprised if incidents like this happened more often in schools across the Beastars world. We only really have the perspective of Cherryton and its city surrounding it. I also haven't seen much of the manga, very very small parts of it, so this entire thing is only based around the first two seasons of the anime. Either way, the death of Tem is heartbreaking because it shows what can truly go wrong and how even if some carnivores are nicer, there will always be those that herbivores have to be careful around and they wouldn't even really know who. But also because it shows an issue in the mental health area. While you can't always "notice the signs" when someone is struggling and might do something as bad as this, it still felt like there was nothing really available that would have helped Riz. Still, Riz was terrifying and when I saw how "romanticized" the whole thing was from Riz's perspective, it made me feel so sick. I really liked Tem as a character and how we came to know him too. for me, this anime is just a fucking mild rant about racism with a very interesting plot thrown along with it.(don't get me wrong it's cool.) and i think the issue with riz is that, it's not the group the person belongs to that fucks the person up, but it's how everyone else thinks about that person.(Like, if you think of black people of all being gangsters and thieves and shit like that, they're eventually going to grow up thinking "well, everyone says i'm a gangster and a thief, so i guess i'm one.", it's just a bit distorted in the context of beastars, maybe i'm just stretching it too much, maybe i'm going wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyy off what the author intented lmao.)
@galarstar0523 жыл бұрын
@@somefurryguy1811 eh, idk if that's what the author intended, racism isn't really as big of an issue in Japan(by that i mean it's not perceived as a big issue, Japan does actually have a lot of problems with racism) Zootopia is more about racism, i'd say Beastars presents carnivores and herbivores as an allegory for men and women.
@diesemautokerl21815 ай бұрын
@galarstar052 Which is a disgusting allegory, males are not inherently violent, men and women aren't naturally more violent than one another, and women also commit rape, sexual abuses, assaults and all kinds of things. That mentality just victim blames innocent males and paints them as being violent. So that's even worse than racism at that point
@apolar04764 ай бұрын
@@diesemautokerl2181I don't really think it's about sexism either since in the manga we see female carnivores that have eaten herbivores I think that it's an allegory to something that could only happen in a world where herbivores and carnivores live in a society that's what makes the story so incredible, it couldn't work on any of the current settings that we have in our own world because we are humans, the main problem, the main divide it's caused by something that only happens in the world of Beastars
@diesemautokerl21814 ай бұрын
@apolar0476 Oh I understand your point, but I feel as it they're trying to make a (false) statement about males and females, but also fail to disallow sexist stereotypes between males and females in the actual show itself, if it's trying to make an allegory. Trust me, I would love to believe that what you said is truly the case and not some gross false allegory

What I’m guessing is that Riz blacked out after Tem called him a monster, and became conscious during or after he at Tem, and his brain just filled in the missing gap with a fake memory(out of guilt). That or he was conscious and aware during all of this, and was just in denial. I know he confessed to Legoshi, pretending that he did it out of love, when really, he was just selfish. But then again, I finished the manga a while ago, so I don’t remember.

I’ve always wondered if this was supposed to be a metaphor for sex. Or more like a metaphor for rape. Riz is so deluded that he thinks eating (aka raping) tem is the truest form of love because he’s finally showing his true self. Riz constantly talks about the event like it was beautiful and perfect, how he believes that tem really wanted it. Like other people have said, it shows how abusers often delude themselves into thinking what they did was okay.

I'm commenting this right after finishing S2E7, and honestly, the thing that I like about Riz the most is how his eyes change when he's in carnage mode, he looked so innocent and seemed like a genuinely nice dude. Throughout season 1 and the first half of season 2, we saw how friendly and chill he was talking with others, but then we would later see that he has trouble sleeping at night from the night he killed Tem, as well as when Legoshi (and Pina) confronted him, he really looked like he was about to break shit open and spill some blood. To be fair, it may seem like he's just coping really hard over the loss of the one person whom he truly considered a friend, despite having trouble sleeping, he had always had it together, maybe whatever he's feeling is an amalgamation of guilt, regret, and relief. Relieved by the fact that he felt accepted by even a single person. He probably doesn't even know it, but subconsciously, he's using his delusions as a coping mechanism, as another commenter pointed out, Tem in actuality only saw him as a classmate, nothing more, but to Riz, he's the best friend anyone could ever ask for. I bet there were a lot of times Riz almost went insane because of that 1 night, but then he'd recall all the times he had spent with Tem, despite only having talked to each other a few times, those were unforgettable memories to him. I do kind of hate him for killing Tem (especially for not taking his medications), but his character arc is just an overall tragic one. He was so obsessed with the thought of having someone to talk to other than his family that he thought it would be okay to do literally anything in front of his best friend, he's been deluding himself about not just his death, but throughout his and Tem's relationship as well. (rarely do I ever write essay-esque comments but for a subject like this I feel obliged to speak up about it since I was once like that to some guy I met online and around my age (but not as wild), and I feel like one of the major problems about relationships like that is that one side usually has trouble handling relationships most likely due to the fact that they've never been close to anyone before, they don't know how to put up a good face to the other party, which could cause problems for both sides over the course of the relationship. If there's anyone out there who was also like me once, I really hope you'd step out of that zone since it'd be in your best interest to do so, and also find better people to be friends with as well as think of more (or better) ways to build up (and prolong) relationships.)

I hate that he murdered tem, but as someone who's never really had friends either, I can sort of see how someone so desperate to have anyone to talk to could greatly misread signals and end up hurting the person they viewed as a friend. People compare Beastars to Zootopia for obvious reasons, but it seems like the discrimination in Beastars is a lot more warranted, given that carnivores admit to having the desire to kill and eat herbivores, and act on that desire fairly often throughout the show. The way I see it their relationship and Riz being a carnivore is to an extent a metaphore for him having some kind of mental illness or problem and he has to take drugs to not spiral out of control. It is able to give him a "normal" life but it also makes him feel like he can't be himsefl if he takes it and in turn can't show his true self around other people. When Tem talked to him, he thought he didn't need the medication anymore because someone can accept his true self but that backfired because he takes those for a reason and ended up killing Tem. The way he saw it could also be like a psycothic vision, he thought Tem accepted him fully and let him kill him but in reality he was scared of him and felt betrayed before dying.

You know. I'm willing to actually give Riz some credit. He probably *did* want Tem to see his real side. But Tem realized the danger he was in and how bad it was that Riz wasn't taking his suppressants. He started to get frightened, when Riz went to grab his arm to calm him down, but like when Tao accidentally ripped Kibi's arm off in the season. When Tem started to back away and Riz reached out, and he accidentally dislocated and slightly tore his arm off. At this point Tem became terrified and believed he was going to die and immediately took off running. Riz was about to if not started to give chase when the scent of Tem's blood overtook his senses. And more and more of Tem's blood wafted into mind, turning him for the hunt. It is likely true that when he snapped out of it at 3:09, to some level that's what happened. Confused, delirious, and potentially even scared. He found himself in-front of Tem's acutely mangled remains. I wouldn't be surprised if even right then and there, is when the 'friendship' lie started. Potentially to savor what remains of his friend before he is gone forever. As it's the last time he will ever be in-front of his deceased friend again. There's obviously a twisted logic to that, but considering the situation, I can't say that's a surprise. It IS a Murder after all. A murder Riz didn't want to commit. I honestly feel bad for the carnivores of Beastars. Living in a body where at the pull of a trigger, they could annihilate the ones they love. All because they're a carnivore, and the other. A herbivore. It's a cruel world. Edit: After reading some comments, it's totally possible that maybe what happened up until Riz entered the classroom is true. Riz has been shown to be very lonely and isolated, and I can't even imagine what taking meds to suppress things within yourself for everyone around you does to a person mentally. But his developing bond with Tem got shut down in the classroom when rejected by Tem when he said "You carnivores are all monsters!" Riz rejected again, pained, hurt, angry. In his current state, perhaps blacked out? I feel like I trust this reedition of the events less, but in the manga and show, it's clear that blood alone doesn't trigger their primal urges, and even at times fear doesn't either. It makes me wonder what the prerequisites are to make a carnivore lose control. Then again that is a deeply personal thing that varies from person to person I imagine. People below have pointed out that Tem refers to Riz as a Classmate, and not as a friend. Which is curious, as I can definitely see that lending to the idea of Riz killing Tem with rejection, pain, and isolation he's felt all his life. Not only is Riz's feelings one-sided but someone he cares for, called him a monster. A view Riz has heard and felt time and time again, except this time. Blasted into his face at his most vulnerable. Honestly, the events surrounding Tem's murder, and Tem and Riz as people are truly curious. It makes me want to know what truly went down there, moment by moment. And who Tem is as a person. There is a lot of idealizing of Tem in this series from a lot of people. Was Tem truly an accepting and caring person. Or is this really the bitter resentment he carries in his heart deep down inside. And who was Riz before the murder? Before this horrible traumatic incident tore his identity and being apart. It's all really curious. And I appreciate the lengths the story goes to portray Riz as a sympathetic antagonist. His crime was horrible, and not without severe condemnation. But a lot of pain within Riz helped boil up this terrible concoction of a situation. The situation was complex, and in tandem with the fragile social framework of the series that often seemingly threatens to collapse. In some ways, it felt like a disaster waiting to happen.
