Beastie Boys- Rock Hard (Full 12 Inch)

I got this from Groove Records (Greek Street, London) in 1985. Back then Groove was the best place to get US imports. I didn't even know who the Beastie Boys were at the time, but got it purely because it was on Def Jam and being a big LL Cool J, Jazzy Jay, and T La Rock fan. In 1985/86 we didn't really think of the Beastie's as a 3 man group, but more a 4 man with the heavy influence from Rick Rubin.

Me too got this def jam u.s import from groove records back in early 1985 after hearing this & beastie’s groove the other song on this record after mike allen (rip) played this on his capital 95.8fm rap & hip hop show amongst the early def jam classics.

Mike D called AC/DC to try and have this song put on the last Beastie Boys compilation and he was told no by Angus Young. Angus said "You got away with the sample for decades and that's fine, but the song is ours now." That's according to an interview Ad-Rock did with Tony Hawk last week.

So this vinyl is worth a fortune if you're lucky enough to find it. The levels are way off, but they fixed that later in their production. Check Your Head is my favorite, I think it's their best work.

In the Beastie Boys’ book Mike and Adam talk about how Rick helped them shape their Rap personas. Ad-Rock said at first he wanted to sound a lot cooler on the mic like other rappers around the time - deeper, cooler voice and all. He says after he really heard how unconvincing it was on the mic, he eventually switched to a more whiny, elastic vocal style because it was more in line with how he actually is. So, this is being their first Rap 12 inch, they were still definitely in the figuring out how they want to rap phase.
