i started learning guitar at age 12. after a few lessons my guitar tutor said bring in any tune, he'll teach me to play it. any tune i wanted. i brought this. as i played the tape i could see a look cross his face as if civilization were surely doomed. the early beasties were abrasive bratty and your parents and guitar teacher hated them. Mike D was 12 or 13 when the group started in 1978 (the other members were 12, 15 and it’s hard to find anything out about the first bassist), MCA was nearly 17 when he joined in 1981 and Ad-Rock was the last to join at 15 in 1982. Goes to show musical talent is ageless. Could be 7 or 70

"While the Beastie Boys started as a punk band in the late 1970s, they had evolved into a hip hop band by the early 1980s. They then worked with Rick Rubin and Def Jam on the License to Ill LP, and became huge stars. "She's On It" was an early example of the Rick Rubin rap/rock style and Rubin even appears in the video. Long Island radio station WLIR luckily had the balls to play this back when it came out. That was the first I’d heard the Beastie Boys.. I’m glad we had a cool station like that, it totally changed my musical tastes.

I didn't have cable until 1987. "Rapper's Delight" was out before MTV and it went platinum. "The Message" went gold in '82." Rapture" went gold or platinum in '82. I own those records from the time they came out.

Even with regards to "weed" there are scientific reports clearly showing that young people who smoke weed are more likely to have problems with cognitive learning abilities than non-smokers. There are also scientific reports that clearly document that smoking weed will increase your risk of getting lung cancer. Some reports say you are more likely to have a psychosis if you smoke weed, however not all researchers agree about that. Anyway....people should decide by themselves what they do to their body.

Yeah. They were a punk band back then. I spun this all the time when DJing at my college radio station. So LICENSED TO ILL with it's heavy rap beats was a bit of a shock... but I still loved it. And played the shit out of that too. They came full circle, though. They reclaimed their punk roots in the late 90s when they rocked "Sabotage" with real instruments. Saw 'em in concert that tour and my ears are still bleeding! Don't matter. Rockin' or rappin', the Boys always knew how to tear the roof off the mother sucker.
