In case any young folks don't notice or understand: Mix Master Mike is creating the beat by scratching on one vinyl record. No second record playing a loop, no drum machine, no computer. He's rapidly back-spinning on kick and snare parts, then jumping to separate synth and horn parts. On one record. Because he's a Master.

My dad has been listening to them since he was like 6 when their first album came out. He showed me them by playing the CD for their first album while we were taken a long drive together. It was awesome. I love them now. Too bad I’m way to young to see them live, I’m only 13. That doesn’t take away from how awesome their music is.

Musical and lyrical genius right here. Seriously, try to imagine when these guys first started off... I mean way back in the day... everyone must have thought that they were nuts, including their families! I am so glad they stuck with their passion and gave us so many awesome tracks! Thank you Beastie Boys!
@pw96473 жыл бұрын
They had a terrible reputation when they switch from punk (hardcore, seeing as it was USA) to hip-hop, all hype and controversy, dancing girls in cages and huge inflatable penises (penii?) on stage, it took three albums for us to get it, but after that?......never imitated, never bettered and never to be forgotten!

When I saw this video for the first time, it really blew my mind and made me realize what turntablism actually is! I was back then more a casual Hip Hop listener, didn't really care about the scene and were more into electronic music, were the DJs are usually just playing record after record, instead of scratching and cutting. My definition of a Hip Hop DJ was "Okay, he plays a beat and does wickywicky a few times". So obviously seeing Mix Master Mike doing a flawless beat for this track live, just by moving a vinyl and the crossfader, was a real mindblower and eye opener.

I got to snowboard with the beastie boys back in '96 (junior in high school), i ran into them in Tahoe while riding and did a run with them. I was a massive fan, it was one if the cooler things that happened to me back then. I think it was at Northstar, but it's been a few decades so im not sure anymore

I just commented in other post about why dj's were buying two records to extend the breakbeat for more than 1 minute during the set. Such a great breakbeat in this track. Music video kills all the recent ones, 3 mc's one dj, one record one basement.
