I needed this as I have played several club gigs but most recently i played one with old equipment that had no visual way to beat match & no hot ques, I consider myself an intermediate DJ but this gig humbled me very quick & was pretty embarrassing. Definitely taking the time to learn this so that never happens again and would suggest anyone who wants to be a serious DJ does the same. Thanks for the great videos keep it up!

Its worth mentioning that splitting what your ears hear helps a lot to determine which track is slower - which ear heard the beat first. This can eliminate a bit of guessing of which direction to nudge in. This can be done by having one ear of the headphones on and one off, or split cue on mixers that provide it. It might just be me but would like to see you crack out the 1210s and the vinyl and see if you can maintain your positivity! I bet you’d enjoy the feel of it again. Also, no looping available, so recueing / predicting phrases is a lot more important!

That's my response to people who say using "sync" is cheating while using the BPM and waveforms on their laptops/CDJs, I usually tell them if they're not using vinyl and mixing by keys they're also cheating, usually shuts them up. Music selection and reading the crowd is much more important (but you should still now how to beatmatch the "authentic" way, just in case)

One option is to warp the older songs (just the part where you want to mix, not the whole track). I use this to mix old and new songs together but needs quite a bit of prep. Then you can use looping functions and have some fun with the mix without having to rush.

Andrew I have been djing for almost a year and progressing at a nice pace. I read and watch as many tutorials explanations etc as I can. Since starting I have heard so much shit about using sync and people hating on each other that I dismissed it as nonsense and additional steps that a modern dj doesn't need to do. Firstly the explation about club gear may not have a sync feature was a very valid point that although I don't intend on djing in a club I may go to someone else's party and want a go on their gear etc got me interested. Secondly your explanation on how to do beat match without visuals was so clear and explained in a way I have not heard before I am now beat matching by ear consistently, that isn't because I am a prodigy it is because the steps behind the process was explained so well. Sorry for the long post but I can tell how enthusiastic you are about what you do and wanted to thank you. I am subscribed and now looking at your couses. Keep up the good work and thank you Chris

I’m just trying to get better at beatmatching by ear AFTER I already have the BPM matched. If I got good at doing the BPM by ear I’d probably just do everything with the tempo fader (speeding it up till the kicks match then backing off till the BPM stays in sync). It just feels more natural to use the jog wheel when I’m looking at the waveform (just brake the jog for a half second till the phase meters are lined up) and use the tempo fader when you’re just using your ears.

I was actually practising/playing the how quickly can i get the songs matched game today ;-) and recognised that when there is a big difference in the bpms, say anything over ten, its so much harder to audibly detect whether an increase or decrease in speed via the jog wheel has improved the sound. I have started to count beats of the song playing then counting the beats of the song cued in my headphones to see if its obvious whether its faster or slower but still catches me out. Do you have any tips to over come this as I can think of anything else obvious to do. Thanks in advance and as always thanks for the great videos

The first video I've seen that explains beatmatching simply for beginners! No problem looking at the screen because all the professionals and superstar DJs also do this, why would you not take advantage of technology? Just learn to beatmatch the beats without your eyes being glued to the how they waveforms lineup, learn which way you will have to move the jog wheels as waveforms are sometimes not analysed properly in rekordbox for example

I think it’s more of a visual representation of where the tempo fader is at. It tries to look like a real vinyl deck spinning at 33-1/3 RPM, so no matter what BPM it is, it’s going to go that speed when it’s at the track’s natural BPM. If you put it in Wide and double the tempo it’ll spin twice as fast, or you can slow it all the way down till it stops spinning. But it doesn’t give you any information you can’t get just by looking at the position of the tempo fader.
@hexstaticloonatic4194
@hexstaticloonatic4194 4 жыл бұрын
Actually I've got a question. I'm on a ddj 400 and the pitch fader isn't terribly precise even on min value (6%) and sometimes I need up to 10% for some mixes (I do dnb and hardtek so if you have flac or wav files it's fun and sounds fine to either speed the dnb up to 92bpm or slow the tekno down to 92 bpm). Is there any way to address that that you know of? It's very annoying when even the smallest of smallest fader movements jumps a quarter or even half a bpm altogether. Thanks in advance

TBH that's just the difference between cheap gear and expensive gear. Cheap gear can sometimes be a little fiddly. I notice what you are talking about all the time. It sucks as it encourages newbies to use sync and sets up bad habits early.

@@ClubReadyDJSchool ok so I gotta ask. Provided I actually train my beatmatching almost religiously, and that often I'll just beatmatch what's possible with the fader and just sync at the last second if I see it's just not precise enough, is it OK to use sync? I've always avoided it but it gets really annoying when I feel I could beatmatch it no problem but get held back by the fader. What I usually do these days is get it as close as possible and keep adjusting it with the plates, but again very annoying if I'm in a complicated spot of a routine/mix and have to keep syncing the track together as I'm using knobs and pads too. At least til I get better gear I guess. Anyhow, thanks again mate!

@@hexstaticloonatic4194 there is absolutely NOTHING wrong with using sync. I guarantee if djs had this technology back in the 80's & 90's they would have been using it. Why wouldn't they want to make their life easier? Not having to spend so much time beat matching by ear frees you up to do so many other creative things to spice up your set!

So to summarize... - When beatmatching tracks you'll play with the jog wheel until it feels right. But what happens if you mess up the phrasing of the track? What happens then?

Beatmatch in loop, than exit loop beginnig or ending of phrase, maybe? And then make your transition.

what does your hand tattoo says

I don't have a hand tattoo, so if there's something there it's a written note, but on my wrist I have a symbol which represents to me - too much to explain (kind of personal - a cliche symbol, but equivalent to a wedding ring - that relation ship has since dissolved. All good, life has its chapters and as long as we constantly learn and omve forward the human experience is f'n awesome!!

Hahahaha um duh, using visuals are a plus to DJ's who can without. I mean I know how but I use visuals to make my life easier. Why not? Like in the video, music arrangement and good blends matter more then how you did it. Making mix CD's we never made them live, we used editing programs once we could. "Visual aids" no one wants to buy a CD hearing you catch up beats lol. IMO.
